Skip to comments.Newt Tells Greta: It Was a Bit Much for CNN to Start Debate with Such Nonsense

But I'm curious, in all seriousness, is there any appropriate time in your mind that you be asked that question, you know, about your ex-wife?
VAN SUSTEREN: She's going on television. She's making some accusation. Is it a fair question? And if so, when should it be asked of you?
GINGRICH: Sure, look -- look, if voters ask it or if you get asked it in a normal press conference, you just answer it because you're running for president and you owe people a candid answer. You don't particularly want to get in fights that involve 20-year-old incidents.
You know, it wasn't true, and I'm happy to say it wasn't true. And we have five or six people who know us at the time, all of whom are willing to say it's not true. And we offered those to the media.
I just thought to open a national presidential debate at that kind of personal level, with such nonsense -- and the audience -- you could tell the audience agreed totally that it was just nonsense....
VAN SUSTEREN: All right. Well, I'm -- I'm actually -- I'm always concerned about the fairness aspect of this stuff, and what caught my attention, besides the fact that you -- John King, my old colleague, hardly had any skin left on him -- was -- was the -- you...
GINGRICH: Well, after a great deal of conversation, they finally agreed to take my two daughters, who you know, Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Cushman, and they are going to appear on the show tonight. I think they're doing "Good Morning America" tomorrow. But it was only after a great deal of conversation.
We have a number of other people who were personal friends, eyewitnesses at the time.

The mainstream communist democrat media aren’t accustomed to people fighting back against their “nonsense”.
Go Newt, kick a## and take names!
Santorum is toasted, Perry threw you his support...Mitt is the walking dead. :-)
(Until his shameful performance last night, I actually supported and defended the worm otherwise known as Rick Santorum)
One of the few time I have regretted not having television. But, the audio was awesome enough.
Newt handles this masterfully. He’s big league after all.
It was a beautiful sight My FRiend! :-)
I think Santorum is a good guy - he's just not quite ready for prime time.
Huh? Did I miss a debate last night? Inquiring minds need to know.
Don’t need TV.
Newt is like a pro baseball power hitter. He swings for the fence every time. When he whiffs it’s really bad but sometimes he parks it, making everyone forget about the whiffs.
It was more of a blood bath, really.
Thanks. One advantage of audio only is concentrating on the content and delivery of the candidates. One thing that struck me last night was how fast Romney talks sometimes.
Maybe it’s just me and my old fashioned ways, but the snake-oil personna is stromg with him - yet another reason he would flop against Obama.
Not sure which of the 2 is worse.
You need to at least see the first and last 5 minutes or so of the debate...those are Newt’s highlights :-)
I mentioned how fast Romney talks last week....I never noted it before!! Snake Oil Salesman for SURE!!
Thanks for the info. I’ll go looking.
Moot talks fast so you won’t notice that he’s not really saying anything.
Carnival barkers and infomercial hucksters everywhere envy his skill.
With audio only, you miss Moot’s dismissive eye rolling, arrogant smirks and nervous flop-sweating.
It’ll all be YouTube soon, I’m sure.
CNN picks up where ABC left off, the reelection campaign...
What did Santorum do?
Clinton cheating whoremonger
My how things have changed.
What you missed visually was the look of fury on NG's face.
Not even a hint of a conciliatory smile in evidence throughout.
But the absolute icing was seeing 2/3 of the audience joining in a standing O of support at least twice during those woodshed minutes.
If only it would rub off on the rest of the GOP eunuchs . . .
Dear CNN: Let he who is without stones, blast the first sin.
There is, but I don’t remember the url. I’m sure that some helpful FReeper will be along to post it for you soon though :-)
I just noticed your tagline...I love it :-)
Heh! Can’t take me anywhere.
At least Newt fights. Mitt would roll over.
“I think Santorum is a good guy - he’s just not quite ready for prime time. “
Yup. Not everyone has what it takes to be president.
I like Rick.......except for his campaigning for “Scottish Common Law” Spector, and a few other issues. But some of the things he said Thursday evening were an indication to me of his panic and desperation as he sees his chances dwindling.
I used the word "desperation" on the live thread last night. Rick needs to now take a long view of this thing. 2012 is not his year, but he's relatively young and would make a good Majority Leader.
Man, that was beautiful. King showed his despicable nature again when he tried to put it all off on ABC and Newt hit him (and CNN) between the eyes with his response. Also, he publicly put them in Obama’s corner. Fantastic!
I said essentially the same yesterday. The problem all along is the broad GOP field pulling voters away from one specific candidate who can first lay Romney away and then take on Obama. It’s obvious from Romney never getting above 25% or so, with 75% of the votes being split. Now that we’re down to 4, that’s going to change and Santorum has to make the right decision. Paul? Pffft! He’ll do what he wants because he’s a jerk and in it for himself. But Santorum, after Saturday, really needs to wake up.
I quit tv viewing but will be on maintenance the rest of my life. I take youtube. Anytime I need a hit, it’s right there.
All the debates are there, you just have to do a search, though eventually you find reliable youtubists who provide for your particular needs, whether that’s all-the-Hannity, all-the-Levin, the choice conservative political interviews, whatever. And it’s all free, no $100 a month to the cable company.
Cage Match. Newt off the top rope at the open with a bionic elbow to the ref.
If you have evidence that Newt committed perjury in a sexual harassment trial, maybe you should present it now. That was the issue then, and only those led most easily by the liberal media would think otherwise.
I had my TV service turned off last April and haven’t missed it at all.
If Newt should win the nomination, I’ll be sure to find somewhere to watch the debates against Oblunder. THAT will be “must see” TV.
JohnD9207, Oh, even Hillary admitted Bill was just an “old hound dog”! You can’t hold that against him! Signed respectfully, Mainstream Media
I agree. I think he’d be a fine VP pick, though?
I agree. I think he’d be a fine VP pick, though. Period, not question mark. Darn iPad.
I haven’t watched or listened to an entire “debate” yet, just snippets, mainly because I can’t stand to watch or listen to Romney. It’s almost like the point I quickly reached with Clinton and then Obama, when those a-holes come on the tv, I quickly turn the channel.
If Rush had a radio debate on his show, I’d listen. Imagine an entire debate without stupid “gotcha” questions, yet hard hitting, direct questions about policy, in all areas that are relevant to the presidency.
He characterized the attempt to push Gingrich out as speaker as some kind of movement of the righteous within the GOP ranks, led by Bob Livingston, who wanted to be speaker.
..and just what problem did Livingston have in his closet?
Romney is often flighty and spacey as he talks. Newt talks slower, uses fewer words and comes off as more grounded as in “gravitas”. In a good way Newt comes off as slightly bored and bored at having to go over the same point for the thousandth time
[should he ask Mick Foley or Punk to VP?]
He went outlaw on his ass.
Thank you, employees of Obama SCUM!
If only they would admit that they are not objective then they would be NO SCUM; and there'd be no criticism, because like conservative talk radio is they'd be honest about their bias. Until then they are scum.
