A U.S. Commando Team Is Getting Close to the Iran Border
Atlantice Wire ^

Posted on 01/20/2012 10:16:07 AM PST by nuconvert

An Army officer speaking on behalf of special forces confirmed on Thursday that a team of "highly trained personnel that excel in uncertain environments" are operating near Iran. Spencer Ackerman just published the scoop on Wired's Danger Room blog:

The primary, day-to-day mission of the team, known as Joint Special Operations Task Force-Gulf Coordinating Council, is to mentor military units belonging to the U.S.' oil-rich Arab allies, who collectively are known as the Gulf Coordinating Council. Those Arab states consider Iran to be their primary foreign threat.

The task force provides "highly trained personnel that excel in uncertain environments," Maj. Rob Bockholt, a spokesman for special-operations forces in the Mideast, tells Danger Room, and "seeks to confront irregular threats."

Shoot, if I were 40 years younger, I’d lead these special ops guys right up Takht-i-Jamshid in Teheran. We could retake the old embassy compound, then I could lead them to a couple of swell restaurants in the area.

“Somebody is sending a signal to Iran or to allies in the region”

Maybe so, but non-public leaks are just as effective.

I agree, whole heartedly, with your experience of Christian Arabs. Your vision is clear on the islamic scourge affecting the Arab world. I would, however, caution against indicting all Muslims.
I have operated in the middle east and Afghanistan and have worked with Sunni and Shia Muslims. I have broke bread with them in villages. They were good folks, who had dreams to prosper and raise their families, as we do. They were not Jihadis, but respectful and prayerful people.

Publicly stating something carries a lot more authority with it. This is not a new thing, the Pentagon has done this for decades.

Is the article true?
I don’t know.

If it is true why is it public?

Summing it up; Americans with loose lips (a/k/a m.f.’s] should be charged with treason.

“Special Forces” are not “commandos.” That is if they mean U.S. Army Special Forces (AKA Green Berets). It the Army Rangers or “Delta” that are more akin to “commandos.”

This Ubama regime is almost as secure as a screen door on a submarine.

Yes It happens all the time, but tht doesn’t make it right.

I believe training people in our tactics who we may have to later fight is stupid.

Maybe your opinion differs, but that’s my feeling.

I went and read the original story and it seemed more like a reorganization of existing units into a single joint force.

It did seem to clandestine to me. Kind of sounded like their spokesperson explained it as pretty plain.

Why would this be made public? Disinformation? Some foolish attempt to scare achmadinnerjacket?

Because the headline and story are hype. It's just a training mission. that is a mission to provide training to nominally friendly forces. We do it all the time. Yes it's aimed at containing Iran, so it's sort of like training the Germans,Turks, Greeks, to resist the Red Menace, in the 50s and 60s.

But also not exactly something you can keep secret in a place like the Middle East.
