GILBERT, S.C. Mitt Romney and a top surrogate called for Newt Gingrich, Romney's chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination, to release the House Ethics Committee report that led to a reprimand of Gingrich and a $300,000 fine.
After Romney was pressed on his tax returns, Gov. Nikki Haley (R-S.C.) stepped in and interrupted Romney.
"The people of South Carolina are not talking about tax returns. They're not. They're talking about jobs, spending and the economy," she said before taking a shot at Gingrich, who is neck and neck with Romney in recent polls of South Carolina.
"In all honesty, I've heard more people wondering why you guys aren't asking about Ethics reports and ethics problems with the Gingrich campaign."
Romney then agreed with Haley that Gingrich should release the Ethics investigation immediately.
"Of course he should," Romney told reporters. "One of the issues that was raised last night by Rick Santorum was the fact that he was pushed out of the House by his fellow members. I think over 80 percent of Republican congressmen voted to reprimand the Speaker of the House, the first time in history. And Nancy Pelosi has the full record of that Ethics investigation. You know it's going to get out before the general election. Sure, he ought to get it out now."

Thank you, it saved me a post except to say that Romney really needs better staff. This group doesn’t play defense very well when their dirty tricks blow up in their faces.
Fantastic video! Hilarious!

Bozell Statement: Newt Was Found Innocent Nearly 13 Years Ago Networks Have Yet To Report It

Following the recent threats from Nancy Pelosi and the heavy brush with which the media are painting Newt Gingrich as unethical, the Media Research Center is now calling on the networks to seize the moment and report the truth from nearly 13 years ago.
It has been 4,689 days since the IRS formally cleared Newt Gingrich of any violation of tax law. Its been 4,689 days since ABC, CBS, and NBC have had the opportunity to report it. What the heck. Why not today? Now is the time for these networks to report the truth for once. The networks owe it to the American people to report the fact that in 1999 the IRS completely vindicated Gingrich.
Between December 15, 1996 and January 31, 1997 the network morning and evening newscasts filed a staggering 244 stories. Total number of network stories on the news that Newt was completely innocent? Zero. Thats beyond pathetic.
Oh and what about CNN? We found that the cable network filed one — count ‘em, one — story. They’re probably exhausted by all that effort, so we’ll let them off the hook.
See Bozell’s column “ Newt Is Vindicated, But Nobody Knows It” in February of 1999, detailing how the IRS cleared Gingrich of any violation of the tax laws but was spiked from being covered by ABC, CBS and NBC News.
He seems just the petty type. It’s certainly not about America with this spiteful little girl. He reminds me of Nelly Oleson.
LOL, It’s true that every cloud has a silver lining!
THEN to make SURE everyone understands Newt Gingrich was NOT FINED!!!
Words from their own mouths....
House Rep’s statement on Newt Gingrich’s Non Fine...
Numerous statements from elected officials and other individuals associated with the Committees investigation make it clear that the sanction levied against Speaker Gingrich was nothing more than a cost assessment. In presenting the Report to the Members of the House, former Congresswoman Nancy Johnson (R-CT) characterized the Speakers payment in the following manner:
Likewise in past cases where the committee imposed monetary sanctions on a Member, the committee found that the Member had been personally enriched by the misconduct. The committee made no such finding against Representative Gingrich, yet recommends that a cost reimbursement of $300,000 be paid to the House by him.
Likewise, Democrat Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), a member of the Investigation Subcommittee, described the Report findings in the Congressional Record as follows:
Based upon the allegation, the violations we found, the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct on a 7-to-1 vote, full committee now, entire committee, recommended the following penalty. It recommended a reprimand and a cost assessment of $300,000. . . . We set $300,000 as the estimated costs of that portion of the investigation that dealt with clearing up the misstatements that we received, which may be begun to be prepared in Mr. Gingrichs law firm, but for which he is responsible as Member of the House.
Indeed, even Democrat Congressman (now Senator) Ben Cardin (D-MD) agreed on the proper classification of the Speakers $300,000 payment. In his remarks to the House urging adoption of the Ethics Committee Report and Resolution, then-Congressman Cardin described the proposed sanction against Speaker Gingrich in the following manner:
It provides a reprimand plus a required $300,000 contribution by Mr. Gingrich to the cost of these proceedings.
Moreover, in the transcript of the sanctions proceedings before the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, Special Counsel to the House Ethics Committee James Cole could not have made it more clear when he responded to questions from Congressman Thomas Sawyer (D-OH) as follows:
In addition, this is not a fine that we are recommending. The rule book says that a fine is an appropriate sanction when a member has received personal gain. And as Mr. Smith had asked and as I told him, no, we did not find that.
In sum, there was never any fine levied against Speaker Gingrich as a result of the findings of the House Ethics Committee Report referenced in the subject advertisements. Any statement to the contrary in any broadcast communication produced on behalf of Governor Romney, any other presidential candidate, or any SuperPAC is all at once false, misleading, and defamatory.
Romney destroyed hard drives from his Governorship,
and then refused to release IRS papers just this week.
Romney covered up the BIG DIG fiasco and installed
the NEW YORK TIMES agenda against the Mass.
How above us all the carpetbagger RINO Romney truly is.
..another thought naps, is that they promised her the VP—boy did she hook up her wagon to the wrong horse LOL
Newt should tell Romney that he will release them in April.
Add ‘The Hill’ to the list of rags perpetuating the myth that Gingrich was fined $300,000. He agreed to pay for a portion of the investigation (which later found him innocent). That is not a fine, and I have never seen the phrase “acquitted” or “found innocent” in any article mentioning the ethics investigation.
Didn’t Nikki just receive a large contribution from Mitt? Was it just a down payment?
While Romney Goes Negative Attacking Fellow Republicans, Newt Gingrich Talks About Solutions For America... http://ow.ly/8AZVs
It's a Souvrn' state ~ so new fangled contrivances like they have in Wisconsin just don't cut it.
BTW, back when you guys were pushing the sex scandal I did some evaluation of the photographic evidence available on the net regarding where you could or could not park in the vicinity of that restaurant (central to the story) and discovered you couldn't really do what you were saying took place.
Just absolutely amazing.
From my point of view, though, I suspect that both attacks then, and the misrepresentation going on now, started with either the Paulbots or the Mittbots. Both groups didn't want Haley to win ~ Mitt gave her a recommendation which he thought wouldn't help, but he could come back later and tell the TEA Party crowd that "I hep't you'all".
Eventually she has to be informed about Newt's innocense on the ethics charges ~ it's a tad complex but as an earlier poster just demonstrated, it's already on the net.
Kinda what I though. LOLOLOLOL...
What a dolt.
He should start cleaning out his campaign crowd. Obvious his fact checkers blew it. That’s a sign he has some Democrats in the mix ~ the last thing any of those guys ever notice is that a Republican was exonerated.
Paul and Ventura
YOU ARE JOKING RIGHT?
So Haley has to save his butt, because he is not fast enough on his feet to do it himself.
Paul and Ventura
YOU ARE JOKING RIGHT?
Ventura/Pualn 2016? :)
I just sent Haley an email expressing my disgust with her behavior. I also informed her that she would get no financial support from me, nor my vote.
The Democrats complain that the cost overruns occurred because Republican owned construction companies got all the work and did a bad job.
However, I recall that BEFORE the Democrats voted funding for the BIG DIG that Republicans were predicting ruinous cost overruns.
Turned out there were ruinous cost overruns.
It was a stupid idea.
You do recall correctly...Newt is doing his homework. His time in the House has taught him some skills he is using today, like learn the local issues when in someone else's backyard.
Quick...someone tweet this to Nikki! She seems out of the loop.
< tag line>: (Paul/Ventura 2016)
Are you for real?!
Ventura/Paul 2016? :)
I am for real but I have a odd sense of humor. I hope that answered your question.
This article specifically states that the fine is "for the costs of an ethics committee investigation." It also appears that Gingrich agreed to the reprimand voluntarily and without an admission or finding of guilt.
You are SO Right, whew... Glad you are on our side! :)
It’s been out there AND reported on. HT to a fellow freeper (can’t remember name)
The GOP needs to stop the circular firing squad.
Romney made a big mistake going after Iowa after he said he wouldn’t. If he had ceded IA, we could have been listed as the comeback guy in NH, but still not the front runner with Newt strong in SC. As it was he “won” Iowa, then NH, so he became a target for everyone. If he had skipped IA, HE WOULD BE THE STALKING candidate in SC going after Newt, instead of being the STALKED, and may have sling-shotted out into first. He will regret jumping the gun and going after Newt too soon.
I am thinking that Haley is burning herself at the stake.
He’s such a skeeve. Wherever he is, let him stay there. I’m sure he’s up to no good.
I believe that Haley, and maybe Christie in NJ, are cringing a bit now that Mittens doesn’t look like a runaway for the nomination.
I understand it’s all up in the air now so not to wishful think, but I bet Haley’s going to really be hurting if Mittens looses this thing.
So quick to jump on the bandwagon, so quick to betray. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits.
“Romney is outing all the RINOs. Go Romney!”
That was very stupid to post.
Romney made a big mistake running on the R ticket when his natural constituency would be D.
So sick of these guys attacking each other instead of Obummer.
Romney is outing all the RINOs. Go Romney!
That was very stupid to post.
Hey, everyone should be allowed to have at least one very stupid post.
Standing behind the girl and let her do your fighting? Someone on radio said it best...he’s brittle...one good shot and he breaks.
He gets uptight and a bit shrill when faced with having to think on his feet. His rehearsed stuff comes off okay..and he does have some good ideas...but he would get creamed in the general. We don’t need wishy-washy.
There are at least 37,000 reasons she endorsed Mitt.
Meanwhile Romney didn’t know jack about South Carolina’s specific issues and possible solutions.
Our Governor has lost her mind.”
No, she is just coin-operated. In this case, it involved about $70k worth of coin.
exactly - I’ve been waitng for someone to ask RomBot - why did you spend $100,000 to hide all your records as governor?
And where is the media on this?
Look at the expense and flurry they went to to rush off to Alaska to comb through all Sarah’s emails - drooling with thoughts of ‘destroy Sarah’ - and she’s not running for anything, let alone president.
Keep the lamp lit, Diogenes
