What is it about this primary season that causes Republicans to go around the bend? The current beneficiary of the “anyone but Romney” mania is Newt Gingrich, who may actually win the South Carolina primary tomorrow. I find that astonishing. Gingrich has been mostly out of the public view since he retired from Congress 13 years ago. The most surprising feature of this endlessly surprising political year is that, at age 68, Gingrich has made a comeback.

It is hard to make clear-cut statements about the mercurial and often contradictory Gingrich, but one thing we can say with absolute certainty: he will never be President of the United States. Put aside the fact that he lasted only four years as Speaker of the House before resigning in disgrace, leaving Congress with an approval rating around 15%. Forget that he was the father of the earmark. Never mind his notorious lack of self-control and his attacks on free enterprise. Those are all worthy topics for another day, but for the moment let’s just focus on the allegations by Newt’s second ex-wife that hit the press this week. Apart from all the other good reasons why Gingrich will never be President, Marianne Gingrich’s sensational allegations snuffed out any possible hope that Newt can beat Barack Obama in 2012.

Many people rally to Newt for the same reason they rallied to Sarah. They are both fighters.

That's true. McCain was also a fighter though...but only when it came to fighting against fellow Republicans. I suspect Romney would be the same. What we are hungering for is someone on our side who is willing to take on both the media and Obama. That is the mistake that Bachmann and Santorum have made. We don't want to see them attacking the one guy who is attacking our enemies, we want to find out if they'd also be willing and able to stand strong against our foes instead of playing nice with them as so many other Republicans have tried to do (Bush, McCain, etc).

Newt has not run for office for years. His baggage will be exposed over and over until the elctroate chokes on it.

The Kimmy Swaggert ‘I have sinned’ rhetoric will not work against Obama. The indignant blame the media tactic he used in the debate will be useless in the general election.

His ethics invetigative reports which were NEVER released will be LEAKED and they will destroy him.

“Someone who fights back would be nice for a change.”
Correct. That last campaign was worse than pathetic, except for Sarah.

I don’t “get” the Republican theory. The Democrats can, and do, run on a leftist agenda, but the Reps have to run to the “center”.

I think it shows that there are some people who will not forgive, even if God already has.

Romneybots have been refuted continuously since 2006, they should have already learned the facts.

I think the Mittbotts that remain on FR had a plan - lay fairly low, taking potshots at the other candidates not named Romney, making the occasional mild defense of Romney, until he was the overwhelming favorite to win the nomination. Then they would start making posts about party unity and the need to defeat Obama.

Newt spoiled that little plan. So now they are coming out in a full-fledged assault against Newt. They don't have much choice, because Romney is on the brink of an epic fail.

Perry did the conservative movement a huge favor by dropping out and endorsing Newt. It drove home the importance of rallying around one conservative instead of continuing to split the vote and allowing Romney to win primaries with a plurality. Now conservatives have to continue to build that momentum. Newt has actual major conservative achievements on his resume. Mitt has none. It's that stark of a choice.

If he is, then so be it. I have been FReeping for over a decade, and if JR wants to stifle opposing views, it proves FR is as intolerant as the DU.

Anyone who is to beat obama will need to beat him on the issues. That is the economy, smaller gov't, less regulation, lower taxes, real energy program with drill baby drill.

Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi were also married to the same person for a long time. Maybe they should be President and Vice President /sarc

I have not supported, nor do I support Mitt. Check my FR posts, of which there are HUNDREDS. I point out Mitts ‘family’ values just to point out the utter hypocrisy of many FReepers who support a charleton like Newt. I used Mitt for illustrative purposes only, and from the responses, it appears I hit a nerve amongst many of the ‘pious’ FReepers.

So does that mean you frequent the DU? You’re too left for even them?

Silly season is over. There is now a clear leader in the anti-Romney field. Time to rally around that frontrunner. That has been Jim's view all along - NO ROMNEY.

You, apparently, think instead we need Romney. Do you have ANY IDEA how badly Romney will play come October? He will not energize the base. He will be painted as being on the side of Wall Street instead of Main Street. And this election will be about Main Street.

When Newt said his ‘daughters’ has answered the Marianne questions, I lost a lot of respect for him. What kind of man sends out his daughters from his first marriage to protect him from allegations (part of which we know is true, ie adultery) from his second wife?

Now where have I heard that term before?;-)

Winston Churchill is one example of being in the political wilderness. I think we both know the other example we're thinking of.

What are Romney’s family values?
$50 abortions?
homosexual agenda?
anti Constitution as in anti 2nd amendment?
saying that his sons working on his campaign is equivalent to military service?
compromising with left wing radicals?
What are they again?

As others have noted, many Dems have had one spouse. Let's vote for them. Not.

At the end of the day, political values trump marital history, except for those whose political values suck and therefore push marital history as some kind of indicator.

Gee. Wonder what I was reading the other night that has been all over the internet for some time?

You mean those ethics complaints that were all dismissed?

I feel the same way about Sarah. Add that she’s the only one to throw people from her own party in jail for corruption. She also isn’t afraid to call a spade a spade.

@yldstrk. Why does he owe YOU and apology? Are you one of his ex’s, too? He didn’t do anything to me so he owes me nothing.

For someone who doesn't support Romney, you sure have all of the anti-Newt Romneybot talking points down pat.

Marital history is the only thing Mitt has over Newt. Hence the harping on Marianne's charges by the closet Romneybots on FR.

Meanwhile, Newt has released his taxes. Mitt refuses to until April, when he was planning to have the nomination in hand. What does it say about Mitt that he refuses to release that information until we would be stuck with him? Smoke that, Hindracker.
