U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week to focus on her recovery, her staff announced Sunday. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video message. Giffords, a third-generation Arizonan who served five years in the state Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006, will not seek re-election this fall. Giffords vowed to return public service. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.

There isn’t more to life than politics, in a political race. This is not personal, it is looking for the very best person to implement an agenda.......PERIOD......

Members who participated in the congressional pension system are vested after five (5) years of service.

Yes, she may have timed her announcement after she became vested, but in this case I wouldn't hold it against her.

I agree. To me, this is the same as a worker's comp case. We the taxpayers, as her employer, should pay for an injury sustained at a work-related function. Let's give her a pass for staying until vested. She's resigning as soon as she possibly could after vesting and I applaud that action.

I wish her well in her recovery but it is time for her to resign.

"She'll make the perfect rat senatorial candidate someday soon. I don't know much about Giffords..."

From Texas? Huh huh huh.

it is time to get another GOP seat in Congress. That could be the next district we live in when we leave CA.

That may be a tall order in Tucson. It would appear that your California ex-pats of the liberal persuasion tend to settle in Tucson so they can try and recreate a little bit of heaven in the desert. With lower taxes, of course -- for the meantime.

"This flushed out the double dealing *blue dogs* who finally had to vote with the liberals but not before extracting a lot of money from the Dem leaders for betraying their *deeply held* prolife beliefs."

They needed the grift -- over half of those Blue Dogs were sent to the pound in 2010.

You are wrong to think you should keep your representative in congress
just out of pity for her plight.
No.
Just no.
Just hell no.

“She was the target of an assassination attempt while performing her official duties. I don’t begrudge her being given a pension any more than I do a veteran who is wounded in the line of duty.”

Line of duty?

Her DUTY was advancing the cause of the Democrat Party.

I was one of the thousands of constituents who had to protest repeatedly outside her office just to get her to agree to hold town hall meetings. When she finally did, she make it abundantly clear that Pelosi’s opinion mattered to her, and ours did not.

On the stimulus bill, she voted against it - per her constituents will. HOWEVER, she stood within an arm’s reach of Pelosi as the vote continued, ready to switch her vote to YES if needed.

Maybe you consider LYING to advance SOCIALISM and Big Government honorable service. I do not.

She was a lying, dishonest ass who did her best to advance the cause of asses everywhere. For the last year, she hasn’t represented ANYONE in Congress...but she stayed in to collect her pension. Because, after all, she provided 5 years of “service”!!!!!!

Shame on YOU!

I don’t understand this. Brain injuries have never stopped Democrats from running for public office before.

Patsy Mink...Tim Johnson...

I think it’s tradition.

It would have been a great story if she had recovered to an extent that she could have been an effective congressperson but her condition probably does not allow her to do what she otherwise would be able to do. Best of luck her and wish her as full a recovery as possible.

“There are times in life when decency trumps politics. You don’t want to compound the hurt by having her suffer an electoral loss as well. “Part of this nation’s problems” are people who cannot rise above politics and do what is decent. “

Really? It is cruel for a person to be removed from office? It would be too much torment for a democrat politician to stand to leave office?

She seems to have managed now that she gets a pension...

Gabby won her last election by 1%. It was and is NOT a safe seat for democrats. WEST Tucson is, but east Tucson and the rural communities of SE Arizona...not safe.

May she be blessed and get even better. She will never be the same though.

My husband had a bleed in his brain and it took a lot of physical therapy. He is doing very well, but like I said never the same as before.
