Romney surrogate says Gingrich could cost GOP control of Congress
The Hill ^ | 01/21/12 | Cameron Joseph

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A new surrogate for Mitt Romney warned Saturday night that if Newt Gingrich is the nominee he could give Democrats united control of Congress.

Henry Barbour, a top Rick Perry fundraiser who endorsed Mitt Romney after the Texas governor dropped out, said Gingrich could not beat President Obama and would cost Republicans many House and Senate seats.

Barbour told The Hill that endorsing Romney and coming to his South Carolina rally was a "very easy decision" because of Gingrich, who he said would turn the presidential race from a referendum on Obama into "the adventures of Newt Gingrich."

"Newt would be a disaster as the nominee," he said. "He will put the House at risk. He will put our chances of taking the Senate down the tubes."

Barbour, who ran his uncle Haley Barbour's successful reelection campaign as Mississippi governor, warned that Gingrich would cost the GOP chances at some governorships as well, and could not beat Obama.

"He's too polarizing a figure to win the White House. He can't win independent voters and we can't win the White House without independent voters. He would be a disaster for our down-ticket candidates and our gubernatorial candidates."

South Carolina has very high unemployment. Iowa and New Hampshire did not. What you saw is high turnout among people who think the economy is the most important issue and a resounding endorsement that Newt is the man to right the ship. Romney won voters making over $200,000, Newt won everyone else. It just shows that Romney would be absolutely toxic in the industrial swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania that are so crucial in the election. Huckabee got it right the first time, they don’t want to vote for someone who looks like the guy who laid them off (and in some cases, was the guy who laid them off).

“”He will put the House at risk. He will put our chances of taking the Senate down the tubes.” “

He’s dead on with that prediction of “our”. “Our” meaning the squishy Rino’s. They need to become extinct or join their true party.

What has to scare The Establishment, even more than losing, is winning with someone not indebted to them. For that could mean a wholesale housecleaning of that bunch.

That's why we have to make sure to get the right people into the Senate leadership, too.

Can you imagine what might happen if Gingrich becomes President, but the GOP establishment tries to use the Senate advice and consent power against him to reject his Cabinet nominees?

What they are saying is that it doesn’t matter what the people who voted think. What they are saying is that they know better than the people they purport to serve.

Out of curiosity, what were these same people saying about McCain’s electability in the last election?

Actually, I've heard the same kind of comments about Romney, and about how he won't get the votes of a significant number of people who won't vote for a Mormon. Who is to say? I think there are a lot of people out there at this point who just want Obama gone.

I guess Brit Hume got the memo...this is the same warning he gave last night closing the election coverage.

The established class would try to populate Congress with Democrats, but they would do that anyway. No difference.

Henry Barbour:
You are a total liar and I will keep your name in my back pocket.

Should I ever have an opportunity to deal with you, I won’t.

The Senate and the Congress are going to absolutely be winners for the Republicans.

Rush has been saying for some time that the GOP establishment types don’t think we can beat Obama but they’re supporting Romney in order to save the House and take the Senate.

“A new surrogate for Mitt Romney warned Saturday night that if Newt Gingrich is the nominee he could give Democrats united control of Congress.”

****************************************

Before Newt came along, the GOP didn’t know what control of Congress was. Newt brought the Congressional GOP to full control of both Houses of Congress in 1994, which they kept for 12 years until the RINO Establishment Roves and Bushes squandered it with their big spending.

Now the same GOP Establishemnt is telling us that Newt will cause us to LOSE congress. Who do they think they are kidding?

Brit Hume, a card carrying member of the GOP beltway hive started this baloney last night, and the genius Barbour is just repeating it.

Newt’s win in SC yesterday could be the catalyst that gets the USA out of the doldrums.

I was thinking the same thing. If Mitt had won all 3 early contests, he could coast without spending too much more, and contributions to Newt and the others would be less, too.

Now, the TV stations and ad producers will get a big stimulus package from the campaigns!

“He’s too polarizing a figure to win the White House. He can’t win independent voters and we can’t win the White House without independent voters. He would be a disaster for our down-ticket candidates and our gubernatorial candidates.”

Two points:

1. Dole and McCain tried the “independent” route. Look where it go them? They both took the base for granted.

2. The SC voters had other ideas. Seems they found Newt electable.

Its the Party Line—Only Mitt can win—Its balderdash and they know it. It this tactic worked we would have seen president Dole (and he would have done a good job).

The same people torpedoed Toomey's run against Arlen "Scottish Law" Specter.

One of those same people is still running for president ... Rick Santorum.

I will never vote for Newt because it would put the trophy wife in as first lady. No reward for stealing Newt from his second wife. No reward for serial adulterers. Both him and her are sorry examples of moral ethics. If this is the best America has to offer, the US is in sorry decline.
