C’mon, Rush doesn’t play that game. He’s always ridiculed the MSM for their disdain of anyone in “Flyover Country.” What Rush means is a statesman like Zell Miller, rather than a GWB.
Trust me.
Maybe my reading-comp powers have declined, but I thought I understood him to say, pretty clearly, that he has no use for Gomer-sounding people. Which is an accent bias.
The English formalized such biases in their "public" schools in Victorian times. They fairly quickly developed an anti-regionalist bias and generalized it, denigrating and embarrassing persons who had strong Somerset or Lincolnshire "country" accents and speechways. It was a sort of purism of diction, which paralleled Victoria's moral purism (as opposed to Puritanism). It was an endpoint of cultural conformism propagated from the upper class downward. Sociologists who've stuided English history would have a better idea of its drivers.
Santorum just needs to be more like a pit bull against Obama, not his fellow republicans. He needs to go after Obama, hit his policies hard and say how he would be different. He needs to show he can beat Obama, bottom line.
I think they all need to stop attacking each other, although only one can get the nomination and become president
I’ve listened to Rush for 20 years, and he’s not like how you “heard” him. Don’t forget how easy it is to misread things like tone of voice on the net. That’s why smileys were invented. :-)
BTW, thanks for laying out that regional accent guide. My mom was from Nevada, and she sounded like she came from the Midwest/CA - the no accent accent I call it. I always said she could read the news on TV. But half her family had the twang. Go figure. I’m a hybrid of NY and her. People have told me I sound like I come from *upstate* NY.
Accents have always fascinated me, especially when I consider how big this country is and how many regional expressions there are. And the fact that we all speak the same American language. Especially we who are constitutional conservatives - that’s how Rush sees it. That’s the most important thing to him, not someone’s accent.
FReep in peace about that, bro. :-)
