The compact florescent bulbs do not last anything like 13 times as long, as stated on the website. I think they last about 2x as long, based on my observation. In terms of cost they might charitably be called a wash; in terms of quality of light they are a step back. Since I refuse to feel guilty for being a white, Western civilization-type, I wonder what the big deal is with this inferior technology. Guess I need reeducation. I’ll report to the rice paddies in the morning.

Easier said than done in some cases. If you have lamps that use a shade that clamps over the bulb, they don’t work with cfl’s. The cfl’s seem to be not as bright as its incandescent equivalent. You can go higher though since the wattage is so reduced.

The biggest problem though is finding reliable cfls that are dimmable and I haven’t seen any for 42 watt range equal to the 150 incandescent that we use in our computer room. The 100 isn’t really bright enough.

If you read reviews at sites people complain about the bulbs going bad too fast for the prices paid and you have to be careful if you get the wrong bulb it will cast a bluish light or with the led a greenish light. ick

Really. In the winter I have them all on to warm the house up. A 100 watt bulb in a trouble light allows me to eat beefsteak tomatoes all winter long. I am guessing a 100 watt bulb uses less juice than a milk heater.

We’ve stocked up on incandescent bulbs and have no intention of using anything else.

I would agree with your observations. There is NO way that they last 13x, not even close. I think I get less than 2x the life out of a CFL (vs. incandescent). The added life, if any, and electricity savings does not justify the added cost.

I had to replace 2 burned out CFL bulbs in the house we rent. There is no easy way to dispose of them. I told my husband I bet nearly every garbage truck in the U.S. is now contaminated with mercury. It was sooo tempting to just throw them in the garbage, rather than save them in a box to eventually recycle when I can find where to recycle them. How many “Joe Averages” realize they have mercury and aren’t just tossing them in the garbage?

Not so fast. Let’s start with the time that you have a CFL on. Compact fluorescent bulbs are designed to be on for extended periods of time to meet their rated life — I’m talking 4 hours, continuously. If you only leave one on for an hour, the rated life drops by 20% and as much as 50%. If you cycle it on and off like most of us do in our homes, you’ve reduced the rated life by 70% – 85%! So, for the example the EPA uses in the graph above, an 8,000 hour CFL would now only last 1,200 hours. You’re now down in the range of many incandescent bulbs rated life.

We’re not done, though. CFLs function optimally in light fixtures designed for compact fluorescent bulbs. Not only will installing a CFL in a non-CFL rated fixture reduce the service life of the CFL (now we’d be getting down below the service life of those nasty, old incandescent bulbs), but the CFL bulb may not fit or produce the same lighting for the area. Additionally, most CFLs do not work in a dimmer fixture, unless the CFL is rated for dimmers and the fixture is designed for a dimmer CFL. How “environmental” will it be for homeowners to tear out and install new light fixtures?

I save the purchase receipts and when the CFL fails I return to the store. The number of hours is on the box, and if the number of days time 24 hours is not greater then the life in hours on the box, I ask for a replacement!

It's odd though that the site has the TVA Logo but it is a .com site. All TVA sites I know of are .gov. This site looks like some sort of TVA partnership or authorized use of Logo and name with an unidentified group pushing GREEN.

I’ve got two CFL bulbs in an enclosed kitchen fixture that were put in in May 2008 and they are still going. That light is on a lot each day. No one realizes they are CFL since the color match with incandescent is good.

I don’t use them for all fixtures, but for this one they are doing fine.

When I was a kid many years ago, I can remember the garbage men throwing four foot tube fluorescents in the trucks. People had them in kitchen ceiling fixtures. They (and we) loved to hear them pop and release a cloud of phosphors. They also had a lot more mercury than present CFLs. The trucks were contaminated back then, and probably worse.

Don't forget to buy lamp sockets as well! I have been told that the mercury laden pieces of crap will have a smaller base, so it might not be a bad idea to buy the current incandescent sockets to fit all those bulbs you are hoarding.

Depends on what you buy. If you buy el-cheapo CFL's, they won't last 13X, but they certainly last more than 2X. And you can get CFL's with the same "color temperature" as incandescents, so "quality of light" isn't an issue. We've replaced pretty much all our incandescents, except in the wife's bathroom and our outdoor lights.

I have two wall lamps in a hall way, about 10 feet apart that have 100 watt incandescent bulbs that have never been changed since we moved into the house in December 1992. They get regular, if not “heavy” usage, on for awhile, off for awhile. They are G.E. bulbs and I’d be willing to sell them to the government to study if the price is right.

I really don’t have a clue why they have lasted so long.

I experimented with the CF bulbs last year, and under regular use, they last about a year. The light they give off is poor quality, even those that claim to be equivalent to 60 or 100 watt incandescent bulbs. My opinion of them is that, as usual, they are an expensive fraud.

And just wait until we start hearing about all the mercury contamination in the landfills from thrown away CF bulbs in about 20 years. More Superfund galore!!!
