MIAMI Former House speaker Newt Gingrich on Wednesday mocked as an Obama-level fantasy Mitt Romneys plan to deal with illegal immigration by encouraging self-deportation.
Gingrich made the comment as he began a day of outreach to Floridas Hispanic voters with an extensive interview on Spanish-language television and a speech at Florida International University in which he called for a more a forceful U.S. role in ending communist rule in Cuba, as well as an overhaul of U.S. economic policies toward all of Latin America.
In an interview with the Univision network, Gingrich said it was unrealistic for millions of illegal immigrants in the United States to voluntarily leave the country, as Romney, his chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination, suggested in a debate Monday ahead of Floridas Jan. 31 primary. Gingrich, who upset the GOP race by decisively winning Saturdays South Carolina primary, also used a question about the immigration issue to get in a few digs at the former Massachusetts governor over his wealth and tax returns.
You have to live in a world of Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island accounts and automatic $20 million income for no work to have some fantasy this far from reality, Gingrich told Univision interviewer Jorge Ramos. For Romney to believe that somebodys grandmother is going to be so cut off that she is going to self-deport, I mean this is an Obama-level fantasy.

Of course, you are right...it was a general comment. I just clicked on the nearest name when I posted. My apologies if you thought I insulted you, FRiend.
It is not funny. Did I say it was? I said it was a dumb remark by Romney!!!!! like it or not it was stupid. Do you really believe that illegals will self deport?
As I said, obviously you aren't from Southern California.
If they're no longer getting what they came here for, why wouldn't they?
Too bad you’re not aware of what is actually going on in the real world, and perhaps you are fairly new to Free Republic. Self-deportation is not a new or laughable concept. The rowdy part of the audience is usually made up of Paul supporters anyway, but if they were Newt’s I’m not surprised by juvenile behavior.
Because he is a "so called", and not a genuine, strong conservative?
If you trust them to leave voluntarily and agree with Mitt..that is your choice. Unless they are tracked I doubt that many of them would pack up and leave. There is a lot of id fraud and more among illegals. They may move to another state but I would say there is a dangerous chance that ALL of them will go back to their nation.
Once again YOU are wrong. I am not new to FR. Have been on this site for year. Again, what is your defense of a dumb comment made by Mitt? Newt has conservatives behind him. Tea Party folks, Reagans son, Art Laffer, Commander of Black Hawk Down, Jim Robinson...you are calling us childish?
Make that you are wrong. I have been on FR for years! I am referring to the debate. Newt’s supporters are the true conservatives and yes, he comment was inane
There’s not a whole lot down there for them to go back to...
You need to quit while you are behind.
Or you could read the thread, because obviously you haven’t been paying attention over the years.
I must disagree...their FAMILIES are back there. During the fat years of the last decade they wired tremendous amounts of money home to them via Western Union and the banks.
If you were broke, wouldn't you prefer to be broke with your family rather than alone?
First of all..YOU need to understand that I am referring to the Tampa Bay debate in which Mitt made his absurd comment. It is YOU that chose to ridicule the Newt supporters and call them juvenile. Spin it however you want...Mitt made a stupid comment..the end. You are unable to grasp the truth. You must be a Romney supporter
If you trust them to leave voluntarily
It's about incentives, not trust. Care to actually address what I said?
and agree with Mitt
Even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while.
He’s playing the grandfather/grandmother card a lot these days, isn’t he?
For the first time in my adult life I may have to sit out an election. No humanity for illegals = heartless.
True, and there have been numerous threads over a couple of years lauding the efforts starting with Oklahoma which resulted in significant self-deportation (usually to other states). And those laws and results were almost universally praised by FR posters.
But, suddenly, self-deportation is one of the dumbest thoughts ever.
Actually, self-deportation as the result of actual enforcement of immigration laws (NATIONWIDE) is the best approach and would gradually solve the problem. And the illegals who came in contact the law otherwise would also be deported. That's by far the best approach and Newt's wrong on this one, and he's not helping the discussion of how to deal with illegal aliens with these remarks.
on acorns..you have a big stash? look, the laws on the book should be enforced but they havent been. Many illegals know how to get around the system and fake id’s are easily obtained. Have read that many have used ER’s and received care without any ids. Will the schools turn the children away? in Miami Dade County there are over 80 languages spoken..do I think they are all here legally? no? read up on the mayor from Miami...think it is in the north. He encourages Jamacians to come and even wants to give them asylum. The Supreme Court needs to rule on this and I hope in the favor of AZ and other states that are being sued.
Do you trust the govt to take away all the magnets in all the states? that is where the battle lies. My point is that Mitt made a dumb comment and I stand by that...now, I will let you go play with your acorns
