The 'Take Care of Me' Society is Wrecking the USA [We've lived off our children, grandchildren..]
The Fiscal Times ^ | January 28, 2012 | By MAUREEN MACKEY,

Posted on 01/28/2012 8:40:19 PM PST by fight_truth_decay

You’ve played by the rules. Worked hard to put yourself through school. You’ve gotten a decent job and you pay your taxes. You’re faithfully paying down your mortgage and saving money in a 401(k) – all to secure your finances and your future. But now there are a lot more “takers” than “makers” in this country – and the impact is systemic and long-lasting.

A prevalent new “moocher culture” is changing the character of this nation – that’s the core message of A Nation of Moochers: America’s Addiction to Getting Something for Nothing, a new book by Charles J. Sykes, senior fellow at the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute and the author of six previous books.

“This has been the flash point in American politics for the last several years,” Sykes told The Fiscal Times in an interview this week. “In the wake of the Great Recession, we’ve shifted from a culture of celebrating and encouraging those who are productive and hardworking, to a culture where handouts, bailouts, freebies and entitlements dominate. You start to wonder, Why am I paying the freight for those who have been reckless and irresponsible, whether it’s on Wall Street or in Washington or anywhere else in the community? I think we’re becoming a very different nation.”

Excerpts from our conversation with the author follow:

This more than anything is what is going to kill us. Gimme gimme gimme and make someone else pay for it. And when you don’t get what you want, riot. Ever since the 30s, more and more people think that someone else owes them a living. It started out with groups everyone agreed needed help — Social Security for the very old. Now anyone can get Welfare and Food Stamps. And programs for the elderly (Medicare especially) are bankrupting us. But if you try to reform them, there are riots. Government workers get premium benefits because they think they deserve it. And a big chunk of the population agrees. They think “the rich” have enough money to pay for everyone else to get a free ride. Hence the fact that the top 10% pay over half the taxes. We are in for a long, ugly period of American history. All because we moved from self-sufficiency to “make someone else pay” over the past 80 years.

"We have to change the dynamic in which everybody is at the trough. People won’t step away from it until everybody else steps away, everyone else from Goldman Sachs, to farmers, to Hollywood celebrities."

How Did Obama’s Stimulus End Up Paying a Rich Hollywood Director to Produce a Web Video Show?

[Excerpt:]"According to grant reports, One Economy so far has invoiced the government $18.9 million of the $28.5 million awarded under the grant, with 142.47 jobs created. The jobs include field supervisors, sales representatives and program managers, as well as numerous production-related positions, such as producers, cast members, casting director and an executive assistant to Mr. Townsend....If you poke around the Pic.tv and One Economy network of “free web sites” that you paid for, you’ll find helpful links promoting…wait for it…ObamaCare."

Might the "Take Care of Me Society" of the headline just be the direct result of an "I'll Take Care of You" leader who knows that by creating such a mindset among the citizenry, he is assuring a voter base who will readily give him the power to enslave them to the coercive power of government?

The joker that makes the rational, irrational is called a central bank. When you can grow money on trees why make sound decisions?

The attitude permeates our government and society. And it will continue to be fed by a printing press.

Until the music stops.

...and then History happens. We have no guarantees. I notice in these trains of thought a petulant "I did what's right and now I DESERVE!!!" That is not biblically or even basically correct. Thankfulness for each day is the only way to avoid the kind of bitterness this line of reasoning encourages.

Also, it's just better to live life as a productive person. Many curses are laid on lazy people and moochers and thieves. They get away with nothing. Don't be dragged into self pity!

I’m a federal employee who worked in private sector for 25 years. Premium benefits? Like what? The health insurance is so expensive we use my husbands, I pay a lot for the dental, vision and life insurance I do get...what else is there? I’m on the FERS retirement plan, and that’s nothing to write home about either.

We don’t get a Christmas ham, logo’ed mug, or even a pen with our agency name on it. You guys that buy into the lie of how great the fed employees have it are no different then the occutards crying about the 1 percenters.

I know. Sometimes I feel like the world’s biggest sucker.

I worked my way through college and paid the loans off myself. My husband and I just SOCKED away cash for years, saved for a down payment, bought a home, sadly, at the height of that ridiculous housing bubble, and now BOOM, we’re $50K underwater. That’s what we get for saving, playing it safe ... living within our means.

We continue to try to hang on to the house, and I’m very sure we’re not going to retire as well off as we once could have for sure. However, I’ll go to my grave knowing I did the right thing ...did not take out a loan I couldn’t pay back ...did not walk away and let someone else foot the bill.

I’ve learned from this whole thing ...and hopefully my kids will learn from it also. I do feel the good people of this world will eventually win out, but for now, it’s a stinking rotten mess. I also get very disgusted by the people I meet in my daily life who are immigrating here only to get on the dole. The entire world thinks America is their cash cow.

We are told the average compensation in Washington is now greater than the average American. The Public employee doesn't have private sector billionaires and millionaires to skew the average up. This makes the disparity even greater. So this is not true? Why the Boston Mayor's secretary makes $117,000 in salary alone. Throw in the benefits and she makes more that twice a private sector secretary, Nepotism is rampant in the Massachusetts public sector. Mom4melody, you got a long way to go to calling us liars.

“The entire world thinks America is their cash cow.”

Of course they do. They watch America TV. They see Buffett playing the system and they want some of that.

As if Buffett bank bailouts weren’t enough, Buffet arranges for a decoration from his clown Obama before ordering Obama to kill Keystone and thereby give Buffet’s Burlington Northern railroad a virtual monopoly on transporting oil out of North Dakota with a “Buffet monopoly tax” of at least $3 per barrel tacked on.

I am reminder of Ayn Rands quote that says it all

“Do you wish to know whether that day is coming? Watch money. Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion—when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing—when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors—when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you—when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice—you may know that your society is doomed. - Ayn Rand Atlas Shrugged 1957

I understand your premise. It is, however, like giving an addict his next fix to continue with the madness we call "Social Services".
It is openly abused to the point of insolvency. No one wins.
I, and every other working American DESERVES IT! Yes, we deserve IT. And what is IT?
A fellow American with his hand out willing to accept responsibility for their actions.
Not some sloven punk stealing granny SSI check, pimping his sister and robbing the 7-11.
Enough is E-DAMN-NUFF!
And brother that ain't bitterness, that's reality.
There ain't no free rides. Do a SFN a favor, FORCE them to do for themselves. Tough love.

Hell, I’ve been beat up by FREEPERS for opining that unless someone had some sort of work history over the last 6 months, they wouldn’t be hired, and rightly so in most cases. Those that want to work will find something even if it’s only some day jobs to supplement themselves. I also got beat on for “demeaning” a guy and his father for hiring them to do my lawn and for other work. I was asked if I gave them minumum wage to rub it in - actually paid $15/hr for unskilled labor and paid $75 to do the lawn which takes me less than 2 hours by myself.

Welfare is small potatoes. The author of this piece is a coward to focus on it. The elephants in the room is Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The solutions are simple but unpopular - reduce benefits, raise taxes to pay for said benefits or a combo of the the two. That's it.

I didn’t call anyone a liar, but badly misinformed, and sounding a bit envious.

There’s not much to envy. Just this year, I matched the private sector salary I left in 2002, for the same job. The executive secretaries at that private sector company made a great salary, as much as the middle level managers, and they earned it.

Government doesn’t have cashiers, waiters, or factory workers to lower the workforce salary average. Almost everyone is well educated doing a complex job.

The smack talk about other Americans working on your behalf is getting old. While there may be jobs and even agencies that are not necessary, attacking the employee, based on class envy, is so very leftist of you.

I’ve been beat up by FREEPERS for opining

Funny when I read you in my Ping I had just been discussing in Mail with another FReeper that "beat up mentality" scenario going on in the extreme. Have changed the types of stories now posted to get some real discussion not a frantic feeding frenzy on any one who does not opine as they do. Sorry off subject

I have given home remodeling jobs I would not have done if a person I know and sometimes a helper were not suffering so, and I invest more in the house. They spent what they made over the years when times in construction were great for them and they could pick and choose jobs, often taking a high profile client over an average homeowner, did not even call back clients--now these snubbed clients, which are many, are not calling [their payback], and they are broke--really broke ..so being the talented craftsman I know one to be, and a good person, just bad business sense..I gave him work..but that was all last year..and am done. I paid them well, but have in the quote timeframe negotiate at ballpark quotes. I pay the lumberyard separately. Then there are these construction guys who banded together, as were friendly in the same field..they treat every customer big or small with professionalism. They are booked solid on big projects..in fact one client [we have a lot of CIA in our area] was giving them work and called and said think I need a stair case here, this builder said you do not need this staircase, and the client said I want to keep you working, the builder said I have plenty of work and will be available when you really need me. Story goes some have burned too many bridges that cannot be rebuilt as before.

So I applaud you for giving work, and am sure they appreciated the extra money. Lawn work can pays well. Falls under Landscaping for a more PC term. ;)

#1 builder is a Republican. #2 builders are Independents. There is definitely hypocrisy going on here.

The people I know hired off other companies in the last few years had backgrounds in engineering, in one case along with that a masters in finance; are in sales on the Telecommunications supplier side with big salary increases to come on with. Those people are always being called by head hunters and would say are in the late 30's, 40's age group. They can pretty much make decisions now on where they want to stay and raise a family, work from the home a good amount of the time with some travel, but can still coach a youth soccer team and spend quality time with the family. And as often as possible, Church on Sunday Morning with contributions of time and money to that church. They have taught their young children about charity. They find themselves paying more and more in the form of taxes in their percentage:income etc taxed to support entitlements or just wasteful spending continuing as in past stimulus programs etc.

I don’t disagree with your assessment (that the moochers are wrong and should be cut off). It’s just that once we have arrived at practical gridlock and can see that some force outside of ourselves is the only way to break through, raging against the “unfairness” of it all can lead to a shrinking, cowardly bitterness. Accepting the reality of life’s tough unfairness is positive, I believe (and I’ve had a hard time coming to this!).

I work as a lab tech for a fairly large hospital. I see a lot people able to work coming in on Gateway or Medical Assistance and they get whatever the doctor ordered paid for. Then you have the elderly come in on medicare and we have to go test by test to see if that test will be paid by medicare or will it be out of pocket by the patient. Its screwed up.

This is nothing but lies and utter bull s**t.

Those running government are so "well educated" the country is now flooded with millions who entered illegally during war time, those in government have looted the national treasure, borrowed trillions from Communist, bailed out the corrupt with trillion in tax dollars, leaving tens of millions of Americans homeless, jobless, with a standard of living plummeting, for those in the private sector.

Now we have more unionized government employees than in the private sector, as government becomes more corrupt, bloated and controlling by the day.

And you people have the arrogant nerve to tell the American private sector how well educated those in government are?

I hear you. But it is liberal 1% who keep funding liberal political campaigns. The poor sure have no money to fund, but they will take a cash pay off to ride a bus to nowhere. And unfortunately the ‘rich’ 1% so called conservatives hang with the 1% rich liberals, and itch and scratch when the ones who fund liberal campaigns demand the ‘rich’ pay more taxes. WE the people are viewed as trailer park trash, when in fact drag a large denomination of cash through their gated communities and they attach themselves like flies on poop.

Ya ever been to any of the thousands of DMV's?

Ya go 290 pound government clerks with 3 inch nails treating the people the other side of the counter like they are annoying them, as these parasites force the private sector to re-register the same freaking vehicles, over and over and over and over. All while the bloated government employees discuss what they're going to eat for lunch and where they are planning to retire to on their government pensions.

Ya ever been to a court nowadays? They've got more cash registers than a Super Walmart.

A racket and scam does not begin to describe this government insanity.

There has come to be a better understanding of the definition of "well educated". To have useless Letters after ones name, where formal education stops in the bricks and mortar of university buildings, but with those tools one has been given they step forward into real life where the real "Learning" begins. And probably broke too unless Mommy and Daddy were generous. Too often that is where the learning stopped, they considered themselves the best and the brightest already; but when they entered the real world-they were not equipped for reality that others were better and brighter, so continued to rest on the safety of these Letters, degrees and hoped who they knew or would come to know, those they should choose to align themselves with, would help coattail them up the ladder to personal success tailor made for a job in politics. Put enough of these 'limited thinkers' together and you find they cannot handle the task at hand, not just one of them; but now all of them are in one room determining our futures, so they cover or hide the facts, yuk it up to take up the minutes of the meeting, give something away over and over again, put on their "smart face" and hope no one realizes what a stooge they really are.

Maybe Ms Mackey does a good thing by helping start the conversation but she falls way short in indentifying the whole sliding problem. I’ve been watching it develop for the last half century when people began moving off the farm at a much higher rate. In my high school graduating class (1960) only 5 of 100 kids lived in town. At our recent 50 year reunion only 5 of the same 100 still live/work a farm.

To me, it started in the late 60’s when it got easier for people to make a living with a very limited skill set. Never mind the beginnings of the welfare state by LBJ, that’s a big factor, but specialization in the work place, unionization rules demanding simple jobs, and a whole range of related developments made it possible for people to make a good living with a limited knowledge base and skill set.

We saw the progression of job titles such as administrative assistant, human resources specialist, account executive, financial advisor, security analyst and on and on and on. Many, if not all, larger companies gradually took the basic military model of defining jobs in very simple terms to minimize training and “getting up to speed” time. But now when a company goes titsup these people are useless to anyone else. One can see that every time a news guy interviews the folks in an unemployment line. It turns out these formerly well-paying jobs aren’t really worth much in an economy going global on roller skates. A whole lot of folks who thot they were valuable now find out “not so much”.

Way too many people thot they’d grabbed the gold ring when they got that first good job. Don’t have to keep learning skills. Don’t have to do any more homework. Don’t have to read anymore of those books—just too HARD! The boss should pay me if he wants me to study on my own time-—how many times have I heard that -—going back to the mid 60’s. ( and by the way: they’ve gotten fatter) It doesn’t take me long to convince my own employees that they have to keep learning. At first they tend to resist but then the light comes on. Most of the people who’ve worked for me over the last three decades now have their own businesses-—they learned how to do research, they learned skills they never dreamed of, They learned how to root out and recognize opportunity, and when they thot they had a base made a run for it. Many still feed my company work as subs and I’ve not yet seen one fail. AND-—no one who’s ever worked for me is now unemployed.

There only 12 million of us left in this country, USA, that actually manufacture something. The rest are overhead, non-production, service, riding in instead of pulling the wagon. If you find yourself in a tough spot take a look in the mirror and see if you are pulling, riding, or just sitting on the curb clapping at the parade.

These cashiers?

in Massachusetts.

..or you can drive through the "Fast Lane," which is a computerized system . Obama should stop blaming ATM's and blame the state government for this "technology".

This is funny http://www.zug.com/pranks/turnpike/ The Massachusetts Turnpike did not really care what you put in.[this could be dated] And I might add very unfriendly toll takers [note below] in those few toll stations occupied by a living body.

Taxpayers pay over and over again to build and maintain roads..why should they still continue pay to drive over them? I wonder if you get to name the road..like in when the sign asks: "Buy a Road?", they put your name on it; then do you still have to pay.

Won't even get into the Big Dig which construction went on and on for years [is it really safe?] which taxpayers all over this country paid for and will never even see say much use.

Massachusetts has always had a corrupt state government as long as anyone can remember. The toll money went to the Turnpike's plutocops, formally named Troop E reported the biggest of the racketeers who ran the Turnpike into the ground [ article] Then MA had Paul “the Cook” Moccia, the cocaine dealing Turnpike toll collector who went up on murder charges having shot, dismembered and then cooked up the bodyparts of his cocaine supplier. [will also drive through faster next time Yikes]

[not bashing you, LoneRangerMassachusetts, just the state..but it is fun to listen to through WRKO's Howie Carr.] ;)

You taught them, you deserve to be proud of their achievements as they are your achievements..are you available to run for President?
