(Reuters) - A confident Mitt Romney solidified his lead in Florida polls and ridiculed Republican rival Newt Gingrich on Monday, calling his opponent's attacks "sad" and "painfully revealing" the day before the state's crucial presidential primary.
Romney's self-assuredness was on full display during a campaign tour that felt at times like a victory lap, with the front-runner telling a crowd of 2,000 in Dunedin, Florida: "With a turnout like this I got a feeling we might win tomorrow."
"There's no question that politics ain't bean bags, and we have made sure that our message is out loud and clear," Romney said on NBC's "Today" show.
Gingrich, hit hard last week by a more aggressive Romney strategy, branded his rival as a party insider and elite friend of Wall Street while pledging to stay in the presidential race for the long haul no matter what the outcome in Florida.
"On big philosophical issues, he is for all practical purposes a liberal and I am a conservative and that's what this fight is going to be about all the way to the convention," he said of Romney on "CBS This Morning."
Romney shrugged off the continued Gingrich attacks, drawing cheers from the crowd when he said Gingrich was not doing too well and had been "flailing about."
"I know, it's sad isn't it?" Romney said, calling it "painfully revealing" and adding: "You've just gotta shake your head."
The bitter back-and-forth in Florida was hardly surprising after two turbulent weeks in what is widely considered the most volatile Republican race for the White House in recent memory.
Just 10 days ago, Romney was limping out of South Carolina, where he came in second. Now Florida is his for the taking after prominent conservatives and party ...

I despise this man.

What an a**hole! If he’s sure of winning, he could be gracious or that. We know what he chose. Sure he’s going to unite the party if he wins the nomination. I sure can’t see any signs of that ability!
I will not vote for him period.
Third party or will do a write-in.
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16:18)
So far Mitt’s lost 2 out of 3. When he loses Florida, he’s really going to be hopping mad. Too bad!!
When you do it in front of grown-ups, it just makes you look like a dick.
I heard him and I concluded he has no class. I think he made some of the people standing at his side very uncomfortable. His bullying side has been shining through. Have you ever noticed how he stares at Newt in debates? That smile of his is not real.
I saw the video, I think he is costing himself some votes, it is the first time we have had just a quick glimpse behind the robotic Romney, of the confident Romney, and even that little glimpse, is very off putting.
He is very Obama like.
Thanks, that was far classier than the response that initially flashed through *my* mind.
LOL! I love your answer.
Mitt is a vile, arrogant, power lusting madman.
Mitt truly is [rest of my post self-deleted]
Yes, he stares in order to intimidate and ridicule his opponents. I’ve noticed it. Romney needs to go down, followed shortly thereafter by the RINOs and other freaks who have shown their ugly heads in this ugly election cycle. It’s time to reform the country AND reclaim the party.
Talk about a disgrace.
It was either that or something the mods would have had to pull! :-)
I can honestly say after this last two days that I dislike Mitt more than I dislike Obama. Obama is misguided, and was brought up to believe that Black Liberation Theology, or whatever, so he is a creature of his upbringing. I hate what he is doing to America, but Mitt is just an no class arrogant a**wipe.
...someway, somewhere, somehow!
I not only want to see this smug douchebag defeated but I want to see his nose rubbed in it.
My Mom was watching the news earlier and she said “I HATE THAT MAN”(They had a split screen of Obama and Romney) I said “Which one” and she said “Both” hear hear! They are both exactly the same, both slime balls who make my skin crawl
I love your mom!
Well, one thing is for sure, with Mitt “what you see is” ... what you see, and there is no more. In fact, I am sure there is less.
If I had to choose between Obama and Romney, it would be tough but, I’d go for Obama.
Michaek Reagan was just on Mark Levin a few minutes ago
He said that Ronald Reagan was part of the original TEA Rarty
He also said he couldnt understand why Romney is telling such lies about his father and Newt...
He said Romney was not around durinjg the Reagan years and is not mentioned at all in the Reagan diaries...
One of Romneys top campaign guys was fired by Reagan from his campaign..
Haha I came to the same conclusion today and I was on the phone and my friend said to drive to the nearest ER right away!
“There’s no question that politics ain’t bean bags, and we have made sure that our message is out loud and clear,” Romney said on NBC’s “Today” show.
What message, Mr. Romney? Is it that you can spend millions of $ to character assassinate your chief rival? From what I’ve heard, your message is all about Newt Gingrich and not a word about your liberal crap as governor!
Mark my words...Romney wins the nomination, I’m not voting for president in 2012. I cannot vote for arrogant, liberal scum like Romney, even against President Obama. We’ll just have to hope a conservative senate and house will be able to restrain Obama, because I’ll be hoping for a Romney defeat.
What this country needs is a real choice, and Romney isn’t it. There’s no substantial distinction, in my opinion, between him and Obama. Romney will just bring his own group of insiders who will want their cut of government largesse. It’s probably cheaper to keep Obama in check with a Republican congress, than to elect Romney and his big government sycophants.
Romney’s flustered. He doesn’t ridicule unless he feels threatened.
It’s like Romney doesn’t understand that some Gingrich supporters might take that personally.
Someone with a thimble full of political sense would understand that and found a way to win without making enemies of people he is going to need to vote for him.
But Romney, the self indulgent twit that he is, just can’t help twisting the knife and gloating.
If he gets beat by Obama I know who I’m going to blame
What upsets me the most is that smug Mitt thinks he can toss some “conservative cookies” our way, once he has won the nomination, since he assumes he can carry the conservative vote.
If I have to vote for the destruction of our republic, our constitution, our values, who do I choose? The big O, or the vapid quisling, mitt?
I have a lot to ponder, friends.
If Mitt gets the nomination, I will vote straight rupublican ticket except for President.
If Mitt gets the nomination, I will vote straight rupublican ticket except for President.
I have gotten at least 2 mailings a day for 2 weeks from Romney and his supporters. They have all been nasty and negative and full of lies. There is no way I can vote for him. I hope there are more Floridians that feel the same way and will vote for Gingrich tomorrow.
Romney has exposed his hateful, vindictive self in the debates and in the last week of the Florida primary. I cannot stand to watch this man much as I cannot stand to watch Obummer. Same is as same does.
The more he talks, the more he repulses me.
I will never vote for him. Third party or write in for President and then vote a straight R ticket and hope for gridlock to be the least of our worries.
God have mercy on us.
The two of us should sitting together in the ER right now.
Our collective goal is to shove each and every one of those words down the throat of Mitt Romney. Down the throat of the media, and down the throat of the GOP-e.
I detest elitist snobs and A** Clowns - so I guess that means I loathe Mitt Romney... I couldn’t even hold my nose to vote for this classless man.
Perfectly said, to remind us of self-deported
THAT's the word!! "Gloating." Thank you! I've been reading through these posts and thinking about the audio I've heard on hourly news reports featuring Romney talking about the voting tomorrow. In 2007-08, Romney supporters here on Free Republic, UNLIKE the supporters of any of the other candidates, whether it was Giulianni, Thompson, Huckabee, or McCain, the Romney supporters consistently exhibited all the traits of the kind of bad sports we knew in school -- you remember, the ones who blamed everyone but themselves when they lost, complained, whined, lashed out, and were -- bad sports.
And when Romney lost, I thanked God often that he lost because bad sports are as disgusting in victory as they are in defeat. When bad sports win -- and I think probably all of us can think back on school sports with bad sports -- when they win, they're cocky, they GLOAT -- the lord it over the losing players, they chortle and gloat. They're sh*theels top to bottumus.
Romney's supporters on FR were PILLS. They were pills when their guy lost, and they'd have been pills if he'd won.
No matter what the vote count is, the truth is that Mitt Romney will ALWAYS be a loser.
There are so many uninformed talk show hosts and now we can add Mark Davis to the list.
They just don’t get it.
They have no basis for making the comment that Newt is unelectable.
Only a true jerk goes up and gloats before the votes have been cast ....
Seriously. What a low class act.
And thinking about what Rush said today ...that it’s just POLITICS that we have all this nastiness - and that sometimes it IS who has the most money ....
Well, how much of the money Romney has spent in florida really from donations and/or everyday voters?? It’s HIS money. HE is buying this election!!
Big difference between that and what Newt and others raise through MOSTLY individual smaller donations.
I’m so dismayed by all of this pay to play ...
