NASA plans to construct a solar-powered outpost at one the moon's poles, officials with the U.S. space agency announced today.
The lunar base is expected to be permanently staffed by 2024.
The outpost concept was chosen over a competing strategy similar to the 1960s and '70s Apollo programa series of brief trips to the moon.
The moon base will allow for sustained human presence on the moon's surface and help the agency prepare for future missions to Mars and beyond, explained NASA Deputy Administrator Shana Dale.

What Did Newt Knew and When Did Newt Knew It?
Love it. Newt once again vindicated. (I am a sucker for space exploration, finally The Won has done something I like, even if it is a boondoggle.)
Too bad this country is so pussed out now that we’ll never get there until some other nation leads the way.
Me too. Our company does space related work. I remember reading Tom Swift as a kid. Have been buying the books just to have them around later on.
we could afford it if we didn’t have this Kenyan socialist usurper running our economy into the ground.
What a waste of money. Since NASA has become so politically correct a base on the moon would just lead them to proclaiming man made climate change is proven once and for all.
On a more positive note, If past history holds during Al Gore’s upcoming trip to Anarticia, he will freeze to death and never be heard from agian. (See “Gore Effect”)
This article’s from 2006. I thought Zero cancelled all of Bush’s space initiatives, and has his own “landing on an asteroid” plan in the works instead.
All the space programs in history of this country pale in comparison to monies wasted by the government.
However it is politically acceptable, when money is short, to start cutting expenses not where they are most wasteful but where they hurt the taxpayer the most, and where the cuts are most visible. That's why when a town needs money it lays off police and firefighters, not the bureaucrats. They become tokens in the game of blackmail.
NASA is getting about $18B every year. The TARP alone was $700B - that would be enough to finance NASA for 35 years. We get results from NASA; what do we get from TARP?
Also, Newt's proposal was to work with the private sector in this...90%private sector funded.
The man has vision. Something completely lacking in 0 and romney.
Google Helium 3 and the moon.
Don’t tell Romney, he will fire them all!
Despite the many proposals, the limited advantages helium-3 provides for controlled fusion, the complex infrastructure required for lunar extraction, and the relatively modest cost of terrestrial production make it unlikely that extraterrestrial mining of helium-3 will ever be practical.
Rarely any of the ideas Newt discusses are his own. He seems to know so much about what is being discussed by so many different government entities and private for that matter, that he tries to bring what he believes are valid ones to National attention and champion them. To me it seems that he is really in touch with our country.

I agree we can’t afford it... at least not for the foreseeable future. Those grand, heady days of our leading the race to lunar bases and beyond are done. We’re now a country that, 10 years after 9/11, can’t even complete construction of a building over Ground Zero.
What say we concentrate on more pressing issues, like securing our southern border?
Why can't you see that is a choice? Yes, sitting there with a stupid look on your face for ten years is a choice.
A lot of what is going on with these grandiose, end of the world entitlements is happening because of a leadership vacuum. When they were set up, their growth was made the default non-decision. And so for forty years there has been no leadership to change the issue.
It is ludicrous to be saying we can't afford to go to space while we do nothing about entitlements. We can't afford the entitlements!
True, but in New America, entitlements are prized far more than space exploration.
NG hasn’t been listening to Mark Steyn. We aren’t going to the moon or anywhere else except the poor house.
Don’t they understand THERE’S NO MONEY!
