..Mr. Romney has captured the Republican flag and will carry it into battle this Fall. If he loses, those people who believed devoutly that the times require something more than a standard-issue Republican for whom all things political are negotiable and to whom there is no dispute that cannot be settled by compromise … those people will be saying, "Never again."
If, on the other hand, Mr. Romney wins, what then? Does anyone expect that when he gets to Washington and starts running the government like a business, entitlements will reform themselves, the deficit will shrivel on its own accord, and Leviathan will shrink to a size where it can be domesticated and housebroken? Has Mr. Romney demonstrated, ever, any convictions regarding the proper size and the rightful powers of the government? Does anyone believe he shares the fear millions feel about government power and their angry indignation at its arrogance and overreach? His overriding sentiment about government seems to be that it would be nice if he were in charge of it … so it would be run (all together now) like a business.
In short, does anyone think that Romney will ride into Washington next January determined to tame the town… or die trying?

Whatever anti-Washington sentiments he might express during the campaign, the odds are they will be discarded and forgotten within weeks of his taking the oath of office in a replay of George H. W. Bush and "read my lips." The people who voted for Romney in the belief that he would take on Washington will be patronizingly told by the political class that "Governing is not the same as campaigning."...

Romney would appoint moderate to liberal judges that will side with the left on every major case before them
Romney will make a half hearted attempt at repealing Obamacare, then quickly proclaim... I tried.. but it's impossible to repeal.... but I think we can improve it a bit if we ticker with it some.

What Romney is demonstrating is that our little uninformed Republican primary voters either hope or truly believe that Washington can be tamed with a little tinkering around the edges. These are the older children of those primary voters who chose Nixon over the first Romney in 1968. The second Romney seems more determined than the first one, who was prone to self-described “brainwashing.”

Nope. Expecting those dazzled by a supposedly squeeky clean Republican is foolishness though. Just as Obama disciples won't see past his facade, so Romney's won't see past his.

I’m on record as saying that electoral politics is hopeless in the USA at this time. We will have a civil war/revolution, and on the far side of the war, things will be very different. Maybe better, maybe worse. Nothing will change until after the war.

This was not clear to me at first.
Homo Republicanus does not believe that "the system", developed between 1913 and 1965, is doomed. The majority of primary voters believe that, somehow, with a good manager and a few tweaks, that the gravy train can roll on and on and on.
We are not READY for a Palin or a Gingrich.

He observed the Florida primary full court press, with the GOP Establishment -- $$$$$$$$$$ -- Romney Media Machine in full scorch earth force and can envision the Romney confetti concession for the Florida convention as an investment opportunity (if not a gagging moment).

Yes, the part of the Reagan legacy that Romney will be sure to duplicate is more Sandra Day O'Connors. He already has done that in MA. I don't think our little Republican primary voters will ever figure it out.

Rinos don’t really mind Obama winning a second term. Conservatives are their political and social enemy - the other party. Given the way they have treated conservatives during this election (and in McCain’s losing election) versus the way they approach Obama and their friends across the aisle, it is obvious what is going on.
OK, fine, now how are you going to make sure everyone is 100% pure and how are you ever going to win an election?
I really, really want this but what is realistic? I'd love to replace every member of congress with a true conservative--all agreeing with me, of course, but somehow I don't think that will happen.
I guess we're stuck with getting the best we can and calling it a victory. That means voting out every Democrat we can possibly get rid of.

It is time for a new party, even if it requires taking over a small third party for its name and existing presence on the state ballots. Constitutional Party, etc. The Republican establishment is way out of touch, both locally and nationally. The Whigs died for being out of touch, and so is the national Republican party.

Well, excuse me, so to you, unless someone is all in for either Palin or Gingrich, they're uninformed? For instance, I have a very good friend who is very much pro-Gingrich but also very anti-Palin.
It is possible to prefer others and still be staunchly conservative. I'm probably one of them. I was proudly a Perry person and the longer this process continues, the more convinced I am that I am right BUT this is where we are--we're dealing in reality now.
Palin and Gingrich are not the litmus test of whether someone is conservative enough. Gingrich is not conservative enough for me. If he's the nominee, I'll gladly hold my nose and vote for him but I'm not going to feel good about it. He's been all over the place on issues to the point, I don't trust him but I do KNOW, he is far superior to Obama.

I know there will be a FReeper who says NO the majority of their writers are RINOS and any trip to their sites only helps them and their bottom line, but we need to know who is making the case for us and conservatism and support those writers.

This is the issue with which all Republicans should be continually asking Romney, or even all of them. This is the question. Get them on record time and again on what kind of judges they will nominate.
Speaking of party unity, I am pretty sure I heard Rasumussen say on Hannity the other day that the establishment/elites would not support Newt if he were to win. We were also hearing that if Newt won Florida that there would be tinkering, adding someone else into the mix, etc. The message is clear. The people are not in charge of anything in the party. It is still smoke filled rooms but with this pretense of choice. They want money, they want votes. They don’t want opinions from the “peanut gallery”. They want you to buy their books, support their sponsors, make them into celebrities on talk shows, see them as experts. I am done with it. People don’t continue to play a game if they perceive that the game is fixed.
With people like Democrat plant, Crybaby Boehner, really running things, whoever is elected will have little chance of reforming anything, this is especially true if Gingrich is elected as there is bad blood between him and Boehner.

Short answer is no.
The guy has the relationship between government and the people exactly backward. He proved this with his solution to the medical insurance problem in MA. Instead of correctly diagnosing the problem of skyrocketing medical costs as being government intervention in the health care markets that is distorting the pricing mechanisms, he blamed the entire problem on the people - those so called “free-riders.” And so what does he do? He mandates that folks have medical insurance as a consequence of being alive, whether they can afford it or not, or pay a huge fine, which incidentally is cheaper than insurance and doesn’t solve what he calls the “free-rider” problem at all. It simply goes to feed the bureaucracy, which is the problem in the first place.
Romney hasn’t even acknowledged he was wrong, which someone who has seen the free-market conservative light would know beyond a shadow of a doubt that his solution was no solution at all. In fact he is still proud of his achievement, and tries to down play the importance of this policy decision by shrouding it in the 10th Amendment. But that does not cover up this rather naked truth that he is firm believer in “government knows best.”
Romney will govern just about the same as Hillary would.
The "establishment" doesn't bother me, I ignore them.

Romney will tie the minimuum wage to inflation, so it rises automatically killing the jobs that will help low income workers.
He has no fire in the belly for the fight. But with President Gingrich speaking from the bully pulpit, the American people will see who is dragging their feet. Will Boehner spring to life then? That will be the tipping point for conservative voters in 2014 -- and perhaps what the GOP Establishment does not want us to witness (or they will be sent packing).
The Conservatives of this fair nation need to build a new party for themselves, using the Tea Party as the base.
