Jobless rate drops to lowest in almost 3 years

The U.S. economy produced another solid month of job gains in January, offering a hopeful sign for hiring in the year ahead.

Employers added a net 243,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department reported Friday. That’s higher than December, when employers added a net 200,000 jobs, and it marked the seventh straight month in which at least 100,000 jobs were created. That hasn't happened since 2005.

The nation’s unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent in January from 8.5 percent in the prior month. The unemployment rate has fallen for the past five months and is now at its lowest level in nearly three years.

I anticipate that the economy is going to improve between now and November, and that is a fact we are going to have to be prepared to deal with.

This is true. We hit rock bottom and there was no where to go but up. Sticking your head in the sand and denying reality is not a good strategery. Truth is, massaged results or not, the economy is improving. It was bound to improve, its what happens after a recession. Obama will take as much credit as possible, and the MSM will carry his water for him.

All they have to do is convince the small number of people who actually matter in a presidential election (perhaps 10% of voters), and the job is done.

The republican nominee better have the right message and presentation, or he is sunk. As I have said all along, its going to be much harder to beat Obama than most people on FR have thought.

What a scam. When you no longer count the millions that have quit looking of course the number will drop. DUH! So by their formula if you destroy ALL jobs and everyone gives up looking then the unemployment rate is zero?

The fact that even Fox News runs with this as if it's accurate is sickening. At least they will sometimes stumble across the truth.

Hermann Goebbels would be proud of the propaganda machine run by this administration. Tell me his quote doesn't fit Obama and the Dems:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”. Quote from Hermann Goebbels

the BLS Special Edition Calculations Spreadsheet and Data Manipulations Version O* Software.

Yes, TomGuy, "studies"show that the Version O version is the most manipulative version since Version G (Goebbels).

If Dear Leader instructs his Labor Dept. employee to cook the books, the books will be cooked. (It’s good to be King, y’know.)

The January report for December reflected seasonal part-time employees for Christmas so it would make sense that numbers would be a little high then. But those seasonal jobs went away in January, so there’s no way today’s report is accurate.

I was surprised that S. Varney was all excited about the (alleged) good news; sounds like Fox News is buying the lie.

This is like Obama commenting to that lady that her husband should NOT be having trouble finding a job in his industry. Sounds a lot like how the German Officers just couldn’t bring themselves to telling Hitler what was REALLY going on on the battlefield. German troops were getting annihilated and they told him that he was winning.

The economy is in the toilet and his “handlers” are telling him that everything is rosy.

Jobless rate drops to lowest in almost 3 years . . . The nation’s unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent in January from 8.5 percent in the prior month.

We had a population of 305 million when Obama took office, with 133.6 million jobs (BLS total non-farm employment), or 43.8% of the population employed.

We now have a population of 313 million with 130.3 million jobs, or 41.6% of the population employed.

Obama has cost us 3.3 million jobs, while maintaining the same employment rate would have required adding 3.5 million jobs to keep up with population growth. The number of additional Americans who have no job because of the administration's economic mismanagement is about 6.8 million. I wonder how many of them will vote for Obama one more time.

I knew people (here in MA) who said, "I'm doing great! My neighbor is doing great! Even my lazy brother-in-law is doing great! But this sucky economy is the worst since Hoover -- I hear that a lot of people are hurting out there. We need to throw out the Republicans who are causing all this damage."

Today, I think people are saying, "I'm scared. My neighbor just lost his house. My brother-in-law is homeless. I'm just glad the recovery is so strong -- I can't imagine how bad things would be if Obama weren't in there making things better. We need to keep the Democrats in power so that the economy stays on track."

That is just sick passive/aggressiveness and describes the way they think to a T.

Those that do not know history are doomed to repeat it. The Democrats, Obma, et al, forget the “Reagan Democrats”; Democrats that got tired of being out of work, having high prices and interest rates, and being told by Democrats like Carter that all was well.

Today in a Bloomberg report on the UE rate at the very end of the article, the government’s ‘new methodologies’ and other attempts at screwing with the numbers were disclosed:

With today’s jobs report, the government issued its annual benchmark update, aligning the data with corporate tax records covering the period from April 2010 to March 2011. The Labor Department added 165,000 to the job count over the period.

The report also included methodology changes to the household survey, incorporating new population data from the decennial census, according to the Labor Department.

It also included changes to the figures used to adjust the data for seasonal swings affecting numbers back to January 2007.

January private sector jobs increased by 257,000? How did this happen while the civilian labor force participation rate fell to a 30 YEAR LOW?

When more than 1.9 million first-time unemployment claims were filed in January?

How did employers hire a quarter of a million people without adding one minute to average hours worked?

A record 1.2 million dropped out of the labor force. Spin that.

I don't believe it either. I know of too many people loosing a job this month and a couple fighting to keep their home.
The media must be printing what they're told to print an not investigating the facts. Like usual.

As I have said all along, its going to be much harder to beat Obama than most people on FR have thought.

Riddle me this though. A consistent LARGE percentage of Americans do not want Obamacare and if Obama is re-elected, Obamacare will go into full swing. Is America really that ignorant to dislike another huge expense in large numbers but will re-elect the man that pushed vigorously to enact it? If so, we are sunk.

Its not about "America", its about those 20% in the middle. Those 20% in the middle are, well, intellectually lazy, to say the least. As for being sunk, the way I see it, we have been slowly sinking for many decades, as conservatives, we are lucky to slow the sinking at best these days.

Yea, yea...the Obama administration cooking numbers to make it look like things are better. People out in flyover land know better.

These numbers, as they have consistantly been, will be revised to the negative next week or two...and will get no press notice when they are.
