As Mitt Romney solidifies his frontrunner status with a double-digit win this week in the Florida Republican primary, Mormons are embracing a unique moment in their political history that has been dubbed the Mormon moment but not without concerns about what the increasing prominence could mean for their community.
In extensive interviews with 10 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who live and work in the D.C.-area, POLITICO discovered a close-knit community that is enjoying, granted with some reservations, the national spotlight that Romneys second White House bid is helping to shine on Mormons across the country.
Last month, the Pew Research Center released a 125-page report titled Mormons in America that surveyed over 1,000 members of the LDS Church. According to the poll, the majority of Mormons across the country, 63 percent, said they believe acceptance of their religion is on the rise.

"Even though she is an undecided independent not sold on all of Romneys policies, Valerie Barker, an Asian-American Mormon and stay-at-home-mom who lives in northern Virginia, said she feels that a Mormon president could help usher into Washington a new era in which elected officials are held to higher moral standards."
The woman drank a keg of the Romney Kool Aid.
Mormons think they are the ones with the ‘highest moral standard’. It is one of their attitudes of superiority.
They also think everyone would be happier if they were Mormon.
Why is Bishop Willard Mitt Romney not using his title? What is he trying to hide? Do we want the elder of any faith to serve as President? Would we want a Catholic, Anglican, Methodist Bishop serving as president? Is it even constitutional? We need to have this conversation now!
Well, just look at that show, “Sister Wives”...I think that show was developed to make people more accepting of polygamy....yes, I know...”real” LDS don’t practice polygamy any longer...yep
Wasn't Satan like that?
The MSM will SHRED them with thier own secrets in defense of Obama, and this in turn will free millions of members from the cult and bring new conversions to near zero !
she feels that a Mormon president could help usher into Washington a new era in which elected officials are held to higher moral standards.”
Cue the pic of Harry Reid...
interesting thought, now I don’t know if I should be for Mittens or against him. rofl.
They have been waiting for this ever since their Prophet, Joseph Smith ran for President in 1944.
This is the media's nice, pre-nomination view of Romney and all those nice, polite Mormons on their bicycles. Just wait...
They have not really made an issue of his Mormonism, yet. But if he gets the nomination, the American electorate will get a non-stop education in Mormonism from Joseph Smiths con-man history, faked scriptures, the abuse involved with marrying underage girls, the Mountain Meadows massacre, blood atonement, the history of racism in the church, to Kolob, to Jesus as Satans brother, to God having sex with Mary, to questions about the polygamy practiced by Mitts ancestors.
And remember the "boxers or briefs" question posed of Bill Clinton?
After the convention, if Mitt is the nominee, it may not be such a good time to be a Mormon.
This is opposed to Christians who believe that accepting jesus christ into your heart makes you happier.
Not joinging a temple or completeing a ritual.
Even baptism happens AFTER the person has changed their heart first.
Wow! That's a silver lining worth offering thanks for! Truly, thanks for offering up a bright spot in a very dim scenario. There could be an upside to gay-pride-is-great-in-schoolchildren Romney getting the nom.
We conservatives and our pundits such as Rush, Levin, Coulter, Ingraham, Hannity, etc., pride ourselves on not surrendering to political correctness. We scorn political correctness and rightly because political correctness -- refraining from saying certain truths because they will offend people -- is used to manipulate and deceive people. Yep, the Right is proundly immune to political correctness ...
... except when it comes to Mormonism. Bring that up, and nearly every Republican and conservative around immediately cringes and protests how unseemly it is to even question and investigate, let alone sound alarms against, the essence of Mormonism.
But talk to ex-Mormons. Talk to non-Mormons who've lived in Mormon communities. Read "Riders of the Purple Sage" and other of Zane Gray's novels so you fully understand what an honest and clear-sighted writer and chronicler of the American West that Gray was.
Mormonism should be questioned BY OUR SIDE. But who has the guts to do so? Not Rush. Not Levin. Certainly not Coulter, and certainly not Hugh Hewitt.
It's just too politically incorrect.
I’m no fan of roman catholicism but I would disagree with you.
Most catholics I know are very humble. They are steadfast in their tradition and there adherence to doctrine. I think they are more self righteous than arrogant.
Btw, I'm not a Catholic.
Then they'll just LOVE FR's lighting up MORMONism!
Do they 'believe' EVERYTHING that SLC headquarters tells them?
