Gingrich vs. Santorum (NRO slimes Gingrich with use of shadowy, sneering photo)
National Review website ^ | February 3, 2012 | Robert Costa

Posted on 02/03/2012 10:16:26 AM PST by Sideshow Bob

Conservative opponents of Mitt Romney are nervous. If Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich continue to battle for the primary’s non-Romney, non-libertarian slot, the former Massachusetts governor could coast toward the GOP convention as the indubitable front-runner....

I don't have much of an issue with the article other than its Anti-Newt slant. What irritates me is National Review's more subtle efforts to slime Newt Gingrich.

Just when I think NRO cannot stoop any lower in their continuing campaign vendetta against Newt Gingrich, NRO debases itself even further. This time by employing Time/Newsweek left-wing media photo tricks.

Please note the article's accompanying spliced side-by-side photo image. The spliced photo of Rick Santorum is a sunny, bright, frontal view of Santorum smiling out to the viewer. The image of Gingrich is dark and shadowy with Newt's back to the viewer and has the appearance of Newt giving an over-the-shoulder sneer.

Honestly, NRO didn't have any photos of Newt smiling and glancing to his left (or reversing a photo of Newt smiling and glancing to his right)?

There is no excuse for this pathetic, sophomoric, intentional and underhanded effort to subliminally demean Gingrich!! Please go to National Review's website and express your outrage at the editors for their slimy activity!

I guess I'm stunned that NRO didn't instead choose to repeat its depiction of Newt in cartoon form.

What happened? Did Warner Bros. threaten to sue over NRO's Newt parody of Marvin the Martian?

NRO, have you no shame?

I’m sure you understand the distinction between having a point and blowing a gasket.

NR has been in the tank for Romney for 5 or 6 years now. They’re just trying to stir up trouble between Gingrich and Santorum, in order to help Mitt.

NRO - an opinion magazine, not a news magazine - is of the opinion that Santorum is wonderful and Gingrich isn't.

Amazingly, this opinion magazine has expressed their opinion not only verbally but also visually.

That's life.

What would you prefer? That opinion magazines be subject to some kind of Federal Gingrich Fairness Act, to force them to amend their opinions for the benefit of Mr. Gingrich's easily-offended fanbase?

Let's be serious.

No, I don't see that.

If you hadn't been asleep for the past couple of weeks you'd realize that the OP has some relevant points given the smearing of Newt by Romney, his surrogates in the "Conservative" media, and a little bit from the MSM.

Reading your posting history, you seem to be an apologist for Mitt, why is that?

Yes, obviously that's the intent. That's what makes their photo trick even more dastardly.

National Review is prominently featuring the story as a jump point on their website and when one follows the link, the negative photo of Newt is the first thing that is imprinted on the viewer.

NRO needs to change the photo and issue an apology!

An apologist for Romney?

I'd love to see what you're basing that on.

Well, the bright side is that a few more jobs reports like this one and we won’t need to worry about Romney for too much longer. The establishment and all the punidts will get their guy, Obama will dispatch him easily, he’ll finally be out of the way and hopefully will take down all his supporters with him, and then conservatives can begin focusing on finding a real candidate for 2016.

But we’ll have to start early. I mean we can’t have it be like this year where we’re pinning all our hopes on Newt and Santorum. One guy who wasn’t even seriously running until late November/early December and another guy who was at 1% in Dec, raised all of $2 million for 2011 and basically ended up winning IA by default after everyone else fell apart and he got the Van Der Plaats endorsement to push him over the top by all of 8 votes or so.

We need to have someone like Romney. Someone who as soon as the election is called for Obama around 9-11PM on Nov 6, decides by 11:01 that they’re running for President and starts preparing that minute. If they have 3 years worth of preparation and organization and a network all built up by 2016 they’ll be in much better shape than any of the conservatives were this year.

To me, the Newt photo makes Newt look serious and the photo of Rick makes Rick look goofy.

I mean we can’t have it be like this year where we’re pinning all our hopes on Newt and Santorum.

You can thank Sarah Palin for that.

The "will she/won't she" distracted everyone for far too long.

Romney, who already had an organization, was the only one who did not have to play catch-up: everyone else temporized to see what Palin would do.

As a result, we are left with this underwhelming field.

Good strategy by Palin for any 2016 hopes she has, bad luck for America.
