Gingrich says he will not drop out of the race tonight [Nevada LIVE THREAD]
Wash Times ^ | 2-4-12 | Hallow

Newt Gingrich will stay in the Republican presidential nomination contest despite an expected loss to Mitt Romney in Saturday’s Nevada caucuses, the former speaker told The Washington Times late Saturday afternoon.

“We had excellent fundraising meetings and calls yesterday,” Mr. Gingrich said. “Super Tuesday and beyond look good.”

The Georgia native thus dispelled rumors circulating in the press that his campaign had scheduled a press conference for late Saturday, after the results were in from the Nevada caucuses.

“We will probably be a solid second here with [Rick] Santorum in last place,” Mr. Gingrich said, while acknowledging indirectly that attracting donors and voters in sufficient force to overtake Mr. Romney will be a challenge in the coming weeks.

You can’t tell these Santorum folks anything. They are naive enough to think that Rick can hold onto or even expand his 11% if someone started to take him seriously. They can’t admit to themselves that Santorum’s entire support would melt if he had to put up with two hours of what Newt has put up with for two months.

If Santorum couldn't do any better than 15% in South Carolina, he's not going to be able to get it done nationally.

Gingrich is the only one who can bring together all three legs of the Reagan coalition, and then appeal to independents (if he can stay on task...)

Santorum is an opportunist. He knew Romney would be at Newts throat and he took advantage of it to try to score points. He is weak. He needs to step aside.

He just piously sneaks around with no one attacking him and he and his supporters act like that means he’s “above the fray” and of course it’s not...he’s just not taken seriously by anyone.

Once he is attacked, with his liberal record on non social issues and this thin whiny skin - he’ll be in the 2% range in no time.

Newt would have been ahead of Romney IF Fla abided by the NRC primary rules. GO NEWT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Santorum has had a free pass. NO super pac ads against him..very little vetting and the sympathy for his daughter Bella has even swayed some voters. Newt can and will beat Obama

No worries. When I read today on FR that Newt was holding a presser after the primary, I re-lived Sarah and Cain. When I finally came upon this article, I couldn’t have been happier if I were twins.

I’m sure Newt’s holding the press conference, in part, to congratulate Romney- so he doesn’t have to call the arrogant mannequin.

"Conservative press?"

Not at all being sarcastic here but am truly interested in knowing what "conservative press" there is these days?

Exactly. Let’s face it - when you get right down to it, Rick Santorum is just another establishment big-government guy who dances to the tune he’s told to by the insiders. Why do you think he supported Arlen Specter over the much more conservative Pat Toomey in 2004? Sure, I like that he’s socially conservative, but even then, he’s sort of like Mike Huckabee - uses his social conservatism as a cover for “faith-based” social gospel big-governmentism.

Others may disagree, but when this is all over and if Newt is not our nominee, Newt needs to write a book about the coup of the 2012 GOP primary.

IIRC, the RNC rules forbid any state having an early primary (forgot the exact cutoff date, but it’s well after when FL held theirs) from awarding its delegates in an all-or-nothing fashion. In other words, to abide by standing RNC rules, FL has to apportion them proportionally, meaning Newt would get enough of them to still stay ahead of Romney in total delegate count.

It’s hard for me to imagine Romney dealing competently with issues like the hot Middle East, N. Korea, Somalia. Don’t think he is fiscally that conservative either.

I support Newt partly because I really like him and to honor my mother who believe that Newt was the consumate conservative — after Reagan and Goldwater. My mother was a very intelligent lady.

...ppl are tweeting they have confirmation that Mitt's backers and Democrats are funding Paul and Santorum...

Ha! Just as I suspected. Hubby told me he heard THREE Santo commercials on Patriot (Sirius) today...just while running quick errands.

I told hubby it HAS to be Williard funding Santo...no way in heck Santo can afford to saturate the market like that!
