Romney Can Be the Next Reagan
The American Spectator ^ | February 6, 2012 | William Tucker

I'm hoping Republicans will soon wake up, stop fighting among themselves, and realize that Mitt Romney has the best chance of becoming the nation's next Ronald Reagan.

Everybody remembers Reagan for his single-mindedness in cutting federal spending and taking the government out of the central position in everyone's life. What they forget is that it was Reagan's temperament that made all this possible.

Think back to Reagan's famous rejoinder to JimmyCarter in their first and only debate, "There you go again!" What was the significance of that? Carter had just finish a long, beady-eyed recitation about national health insurance, which, he said, promised "not inpatient care but outpatient care" with "an emphasis on hospital cost containment," and how CandidateReagan, of course, was opposed to all this because he had opposed Medicare in 1964. Reagan stood shaking his head and laughing the whole time and when it finally came his turn, he sighed, "There you go again."

The audience laughed and why not? Carter's expressionless, robot-like recitation typified his whole presidency. He was obsessed with details. Reagan's genial response was that when he opposed Medicare in 1964 it was because he favored another piece of congressional legislation that relied less on government. But in a single moment, Reagan had also revealed Carter as a narrow-minded pedant while he was an affable, good-natured leader capable of keeping things in perspective. Voters liked what they saw and that ended Carter's Presidency.

MittRomney has a very similar temperament. In fact he had a "There-you-go-again" moment in the last debate when RickSantorum launched into his inevitable fulmination about how Romney will never be able to debate President Obama on Obamacare because of Romneycare. Romney gave his usual rejoinder but then added, "It's nothing to get angry about." That's the kind of perspective a President needs.

The entire column reads like this author sold the establishment on Mitt and now is tying to reassure them that Mitt is going to start to grow on the electorate in due time.

I think you've actually hit on it. The whole article was enough to gag a maggot, but there was also an air of desperation to it. You could almost hear him gasping for breath in his hysteria.

Mitt's boys and girls DO have to reassure the GOPEE because they'll find a way to replace him as their stooge rather than allow a genuine REPUBLICAN to win. I also think the transparently staged breakthrough to 50% in the ridiculously phony Nevada farce isn't fooling anybody.

Romney Can Be the Next Reagan

If by this the writer means he'd come right after him in the phone book, perhaps.

If he was referring to conservatism, hell no.

As I told my husband yesterday, Romney is to the left of Bill Clinton. No doubt about it. I am not going to vote for someone to the left of Bill Clinton. It is a slap in the face that th GOP expects me to vote for a liberal.

“It’s noting to get angry about.”

Except, to those outside of the GOP and Rat establishment, it is something to get angry about.

Ronald Reagan was the only reason why I switched parties.

Same with Romney except he left the Republican Party over Ronald Reagan and only returned so he could run against Ted Kennedy.

So many so-called conservatives have lost their ever-loving minds. They are trading one brand of tyranny for another just because it's not Obama brand tyranny.

I'm sickened.

Well I'll be damned. He really did. Now I'm even more afraid of Romney being the nominee. Holy smokes!

Romney will definitely require a Boehner/mcConnell congressional leadership to keep him from drifting to the ways of a New England liberal.

Reagan’s horse had more class than the last 4 presidents, including the jackass in office now.

Romney probably represents the total and complete end of the Republican Party.

That happened right after Reagan, with Bush's, Clintons, and yet more Bush's.

The country became corrupt, bankrupt, broke, and overrun with millions of illegal aliens, and a steady decline in the standard of living, as government grew during their times in office.

Under the second Bush clown, he allowed in more Muslims *AFTER* 911, than the previous two decades.
