On behalf of all the Detroit bashers the city does have very affordable housing.

I was steamed when Chrysler took over Jeep in '88. I drive one of the last AMC Jeep Grand Wagoneers. I hate Chrysler.

How about the Dodge Viper assemply plant on Mack and Conner? Any photos of that?

Those would be some pretty sad pics. They don't make the Viper anymore or the Prowler which was also made at that plant. I am sure it is more shuttered real estate.

(*sigh*). Mine was an '88. Stratosphere Blue. Miss it terribly, knowing that if it weren't for having an aftermarket sunroof cut into the top and a good couple years of not impressing girls by doing neutral drops I'd still have it.

Yes Grand Torino was about racial bigotry, but it was also about the decline of civilization and urban blight in Detroit. As I said, I had no idea where it was filmed but it's good to know that director and star Eastwood chose to film there. It suggests to me that he has integrity - he felt the subject matter important enough to require that touch of realism. Why didn't Chrysler feel the same way?

If it means anything to you, I liked the film and Eastwood's character in it. Maybe a little heavy-handed with the bigotry (Asians, Poles, Italians, Catholics, and blacks all suffer his scorn at times throughout the film) but in the end it's good versus evil, people vs. animals, without regard to color or creed. Self-parody is unavoidable, but Eastwood's character grows from bigoted, self-centered Dirty Harry into something less violent and much more human eventually. Morality trumps ethnicity, even family, but not without much struggle and pain. The ending is bittersweet but hopeful.

They could have filmed “I am Legend” in Detroit. They may have chosen not to due to dire warnings from their insurance carrier...
