Oil and Gas Boom Lifts U.S. Economy
The Wall Street Journal ^ | FEBRUARY 8, 2012 | RUSSELL GOLD

NAMPA, Idaho—The staccato of nail guns echoes across a cavernous building here as workers piece together manufactured houses with easy-to-clean linoleum floors and rugged interiors for muddy oil-field workers.

There is no oil and gas production in Idaho, but that doesn't mean the U.S. energy boom has bypassed this bedroom community west of Boise. Fleetwood Homes of Idaho, a subsidiary of Cavco Industries Inc., has increased production by 25% since last fall at its Nampa factory, hiring 40 workers and adding hours for employees. It is building the extra-insulated "Dakota" model for shipment 1,000 miles east to the Bakken oil field in North Dakota.

Were it not for the new demand for oil-field housing, factory manager Jeff Chrisman says he would be handing out furloughs, not overtime. Instead, "We've been able to bring back people that we hated losing a couple of years ago," he says.

An energy boom is revving up the U.S. economy. The use of new drilling techniques to tap oil and gas in shale rocks far underground helped add about 158,500 new oil and gas jobs over the past five years, and economists think it has created even more jobs in companies supplying the energy industry and in the broader service industry. U.S. oil production is rising for the first time in decades. Natural gas has become so plentiful that prices recently plunged to a 10-year low.

“An energy boom is revving up the U.S. economy.”

Can’t be happening. It would take 10 years (or so we were all told).

There is a gas station in that area, with a carry out pizza business in the back

That pizza business did $1.6 MILLION last year!

(According to a guy I know who works for an investment company active in the Williston Basin)

Good freight rail connection from Boise going east. Passes through Pocatello. Plenty of opportunity to do business that needs to go east or west in Boise, Twin Falls or Pokey.

Can’t be happening. It would take 10 years (or so we were all told).

By 2017 America will be the largest exporter of natural gas and oil....in the world. The infrastructure is being built as I type. Drill Baby Drill...is happening now. The pipelines and compressor stations are going in now as well......;)

How can this possibly be? Gasoline is up $.41 per gallon here in Aiken County, SC since the beginning of the year. And we’ve got some of the lowest gas prices in the country.

Mobile homes. What a concept.

I worked for Carriage Carpets an eon ago. That was our market. Carpeted, pre-fabricated homes.

i paid $3.59 a gallon for gas Monday. Up from less than $2 a gallon a couple years ago.

Where's the progress?

Yeah, that lil Civic'll be a big help with a half skid of 2x and 10 sheets of drywall.

Maybe one at a time . . if I cut everything in half . . and tie 'em to the roof . . and the wind don't blow us over . . .

The 190 mile range is rather short. I use to get 300+ on my old Chevy Monza 4 spd with 11 gallon tank. With a 700 mile drive from DC to Lafayette, Indiana several times a year, that is a lot of stopping for refilling. I can make it now in my Saturn Vue with 1 stop to refuel in zanesville, OH and then refill in Lafayette. This sounds like a “putter around town” type car, not one to go on trips in, unless they get a larger CNG tank.

No sale here either. There is no way this is "lifting" the entire U.S. economy.

I don't care how many slop joints are making a buck.

First, we need more refineries.
Next, the EPA rules for all the different gasoline blends in different geographic regions, and different seasons, really screws up the supply chain.

Look, it is hard to find anything positive out there, for a guy like me in the investment and insurance business.

Shale Oil and Shale Natural Gas is BIG! The only positive story I can find to talk about!!

It's all screwed up by the EPA/fatgov, so the fatgov can grow even larger, gain more control and line their bulging pockets even more. If that's possible.

Insurance biz?

Nothing personal, but there is not enough space here for me to tell ya the contempt I have for the insurance racket.
