After wins, Santorum seeks money
Reuters ^ | Feb 8, 2012 | Jon Nielsen

Reuters - Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum, a day after his stunning sweep of nominating contests in three states, scrambled in Texas on Wednesday to round up the support and money he needs to take on well-financed and well-organized rival Mitt Romney.

After winning in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado on Tuesday, Santorum sought to build on his momentum, addressing Texas pastors, donors and activists with the loosely organized conservative Tea Party movement.

"Nobody ever thinks I can win anything," Santorum told about 600 people at a meeting with Christian pastors at the Bella Donna Chapel in McKinney, Texas. "The gift of being underestimated is a great gift."

Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania and a staunch social conservative, became the first Republican White House hopeful to win four of the state-by-state contests to pick a nominee to oppose Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

His sweep on Tuesday raised new questions about presumed front-runner Romney, who holds strong organizational and financial advantages over Santorum and the other Republican candidates but has yet to prove he can win over conservatives in the party who see him as too moderate.

I just donated to Mr. Newt in celebration that Santorum whopped Romney in 3 states. Good for Rick. I just don't believe he has what it takes to go the distance. Romney will now give Santorum the treatment he gave Mr. Newt.

Mr. Newt now needs to go completely positive with a clear and clean definition of real “Conservatism” and his plan to bring America back!

Rick Santorum is a spoiler. Go Newt.

How so? Santorum's support splits evenly between Romney and Newt, not because Newt's a great guy but because so many cannot countenance his repeated willingness to violate his most solemn oaths. They don't trust him.

OTOH, when Newt is out we've seen virtually ALL of it go to Santorum.

Mathematically, that makes Newt the spoiler.

I really don't think Rick will push Newt out. Said last night and will repeat. We are watching a tag-team event. Newt maneuver, takes a step back (He was in the three states only two or three a times) Romney continues the wild swings at Newt. Newt tags Little Ricky, Ricky hits Romney in the bread basket: Left, right, left. They've got Romney spinning, swinging wildly and GONG, the bell rings. End of the round.

Listen today when RS spoke he said nothing negative about Newt, but hit Romney hard, repeating many of Newt's charges.
In fact if you listen very carefully Rick's speeches today were almost what you hear from a person endorsing a candidate: repeating the candidates mantra etc.

Rich has another million compared to Romney twenty million. Rich was in the three states over twenty times. Rich cannot continue that one on one contact, but he can land an occasional punch......And together look what they can do: Eliminate Romney.

I think its pretty clear that the loser lawyer Santrorum is being bankrolled by Romney supporters to destroy Gingrich.

Minneapolis Star Tribune-2/8/12

“Mitt Romney and Foster Friess, a wealthy donor to conservative causes, were walking out of an event together a few months ago when Friess broke the news: After backing Romney for president four years ago, he was getting behind Rick Santorum this time around.

“He couldn’t quite figure out why Rick was even bothering to go through the effort,” Friess recalled Wednesday. “I mean, I don’t mean to fault him for saying, ‘Why take Rick seriously?’ Nobody took Rick seriously.”

Many more Republicans are taking Santorum seriously now, thanks to his victories in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado on Tuesday — and perhaps none more than Romney, for whom Santorum’s unexpected rise poses another threat from the right.

‘The chairman of my board’

Few people played a more pivotal role in Tuesday’s turn of events than Friess. An investor who made millions in mutual funds and now lives in Wyoming, he is the chief backer of a super PAC that has helped keep Santorum’s candidacy alive by running TV ads on his behalf. His role as outside funder — one that Friess indicated he will continue to play — escalates the battle among a few dozen wealthy Republicans to influence their party’s choice of a presidential nominee.

Friess’ chosen outlet — the Red, White and Blue Fund — provided critical support for Santorum as he sought to resuscitate his campaign. At a time when Santorum could not afford to pay for a single commercial of his own, the fund focused in particular on Minnesota, where the super PAC supporting Romney, Restore Our Future, broadcast a last-minute blitz of ads against him, Kantar Media/CMAG said.

But Friess’ help could prove even more vital in the weeks ahead, as Santorum tries to capitalize on his upset victories to mount a more assertive challenge to Romney and to Newt Gingrich, who has an even more deep-pocketed supporter in the billionaire casino executive Sheldon Adelson, one of nation’s the richest men.

Friess is relatively rare among the major backers of super PACs for his close association with the religious conservative movement. His website quotes Scripture, and he often says that God is “the chairman of my board.”

He is also rare for his willingness to speak openly about his political giving, a break from Adelson, who has not spoken publicly about his donations of $10 million, with his wife, to the super PAC supporting Gingrich.

“There are not many donors who are really willing to be out there as such an advocate,” said the founder of Red, White and Blue, Nick Ryan. “It takes a little bit of the cloak and dagger out of the whole thing.”

‘Best chance to beat Barack Obama’

Friess, 71, said that he likes Santorum for his faith but also believes he is the best candidate to compete with President Obama, whom he blamed for excessive government. He said he came to know Santorum several years ago and particularly approved of his opposition to abortion rights and his hawkish foreign policy stance. “I’m not supporting him for how I’ve known him as a friend,” Friess said. “I’m supporting him because he has the best chance to beat Barack Obama.”

Asked what compelled him to give so much, he said, “No. 1, I think of all the guys that strap a gun on their backs and head to Afghanistan and Iraq to keep us free and safe and maintain what America has stood for, if I put up a million bucks or whatever, it doesn’t’ seem like much of a sacrifice.”

Friess ranks among the nation’s leading patrons of Republican and conservative causes. He has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Republican Party and candidates in recent years. Last year, he gave $100,000 to Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin to help fend off a Democratic-led recall effort.

Asked whether he would be prompted to donate more to the super PAC if Romney and the super PAC supporting him stepped up attacks on Santorum, Friess said: “Well, I think that if he does that it is so exciting, because it finally recognizes that Rick Santorum is a threat.”

“Romney will do to Santorum what he did to Newt.”

No he won’t, because he can’t. Newt has far more in the way of serious electability problems than does Santorum. Romney would be hammered by the Dems as an out of touch one-percenter who will favor the rich. Gingrich would be hammered by the Dems as a corrupt, licentious insider who will favor the rich.

The only line of attack the Dems have with Santorum is that he’s religious - which I’m pretty sure will backfire at this point. Santorum’s also charismatic and young, and will play well opposite 0 during the debate(s).

Of the remaining field, I think Santorum’s the one we need as the nominee.

The only other possibility might arise out of a brokered convention...we’ll see about that.

Recently came across a little lady who can take Romney out with the brush of her feather pen.

Check our Trisha Erickson (sp) She has a paper back book on Amazon that exposes Romney.

“CAN MITT ROMNEY SERVE TWO MASTERS”

If conservative don’t see the issue now, Obama and his minions will use it in the general election.

Some freepers are buying multiple copies and sharing within their local communities. She’s been on local talk radio shows....Guess the MSM are waiting for BO to give them the go ahead.

Wow. Did you read the book’s reviews on Amazon?

Very well written critiques!

This is Romney’s Achilles heel, for sure. Someone posted a video of a radio interview where Romney got EXTREMELY upset by the mere mention of his Mormon faith.

I didn’t realize until the Amazon reviews that he actually believes he’s the fulfillment of prophecy. The White Horse prophecy? Wow.

We need to petition Hannity to have her on his program.

I am actually about half way through it. Pretty good so far and this IS Romney’s downfall as the left will NOT hesitate to destroy the Mormon faith to ensure the re-election of Obama. Romneycare and Obamacare is bad enough, but the fact that the right would not go after Black Liberation Theology and the left will go after Mormonism is the difference that many more Americans need to wake up to.

....meanwhile, the Romney campaign is playing the anti-Mormon card as an excuse to demean and devalue the “Evangelicals”, as they like to call social conservatives.

Be very careful in your attacks on Mitt for being a Mormon. The Obama administration would like to re-write the constitution to eliminate all mention of GOD. Right now, they targeting the Catholics, but believe me, they will get to Mormons, but they will probably use the social conservatives to do it for them.

I did read that post. That post was part of what inspired my response.

I’m telling you, the Obama administration wants to put the anti-Mormon issue on the Evangelicals and so does Romney,....and so does the press. They will throw out some red meat about Mormons, but they will always couch it in terms of being tolerant for other religions, like Islam.

I noticed that there wasn’t a single mention of the Mormon connection to the Powell case this week-end. Don’t you find that curious?

That's why we need to toss the hot potato to Trisha Erickson, she was Mormon. Her father served as a Bishop like Romney. Read the reviews and synopsis on Amazon.

Not only the Powell case but also the fifteen year old that murdered the nine year old just for the thrill.

Again. Toss the potato to Erickson. Let her words speak to the truth.
