The Secretary of the Navy announced on Friday that a new littoral combat ship will be named after former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).
The announcement comes the same day that President Obama signed the last piece of legislation sponsored by Giffords, a bill aimed at reducing drug trafficking along the American borders with Canada and Mexico.
Giffords, who recently stepped down from office, was the target of a shooting rampage in early January 2011.
The name this ship bears and the story represented by that name will inspire all those who come in contact with her, said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus at a naming ceremony at the Pentagon Friday.
Giffords appeared at the ceremony with her husband, former Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Roxanna Green, the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, the 9-year-old girl who was killed at the Giffords shooting last year.
Mabus said that Green would be the sponsor of the USS Gabrielle Giffords.
The ship named after Giffords is a littoral combat ship, a smaller ship designed for operations close to the shore. The USS Gabrielle Giffords is the Navys 10th LCS ship.

Oh God’s sake....
They should just rename the USS Cole.
I’m blowing chunks.
Well, it is a relief that that problem has been solved.
I wonder when they will get around to naming a ship the USS Brian Terry?
ABSOLUTELY DESPICABLE! WTF? All part of the bid for Obama to take Arizona in November? This has GOT to be reversed.
I’m sorry she got shot, happy she’s on the upswing. But what has she done...besides getting shot while serving as a representative?
America = Fantasy Nation
I gotta go wipe.
How about the U.S.S. Daniel Pearl?
Shouldn’t it be the USS Saint Gabrielle?
When this current bunch of lunatics is thrown out of office, I propose we name a ship the USS Mary Jo Kopechne.
The other LCS class ships have names like Freedom and Indepence. This reminds me of ship named for Cesar Chavez when all of the other ships in that class were named for explorers like Robert Peary, Lewis and Clark, Alan Shepherd. Now I would not be surprised if they name an aircraft carrier after Barbara Boxer.
I don’t have too much of a problem with it. I would rather ships be named after deceased heroes or great events in our history (battles, signing important documents like the declaration, etc.), but Giffords is better than naming it the Obama or Clinton.
Really, naming buildings, roads, bridges, ships or anything after living people is distasteful. The exception being the USS Reagan (because Regan the Magnificent’s alzheimer’s had progressed so far and had no chance of being cured).
Yeah I’d bet my next Social Security deposit that if Saint Gabrielle had been a Republican, this wouldn’t be happening.
Just wait until they name the USS Obama.
How come our soldiers who willingly put themselves in situations that could result in getting shot don’t get this level of hero worship?
I’m sick of it. She was a Congress critter. Some leftist put a bullet in her skull. She’s recovering. They should have named the ship after her doctors, if anything to do with her at all.
