Riding a wave of momentum from his trio of victories on Tuesday Rick Santorum has opened up a wide lead in PPP's newest national poll. He's at 38% to 23% for Mitt Romney, 17% for Newt Gingrich, and 13% for Ron Paul.
Part of the reason for Santorum's surge is his own high level of popularity. 64% of voters see him favorably to only 22% with a negative one. But the other, and maybe more important, reason is that Republicans are significantly souring on both Romney and Gingrich. Romney's favorability is barely above water at 44/43, representing a 23 point net decline from our December national poll when he was +24 (55/31). Gingrich has fallen even further. A 44% plurality of GOP voters now hold a negative opinion of him to only 42% with a positive one. That's a 34 point drop from 2 months ago when he was at +32 (60/28).

It’s time for Newt to pull out, he’s just there to help Romney win.
(LOL, I’ve said that about all the others, might as well say it about Newt now)
Yes, it’s important to note that Gallup runs a five-day trailing poll. So yesterday’s poll, taken the five days before, which showed Romney still on top, is misleading. Because the poll had been fairly stable, you can infer roughly what the past two days’ data was, which suggests tahht Santorum has caught Romney.
Move over, Dukakis! Make way for Mondale!
Santorum may have enough juice to win Michigan AND Arizona - Michigan has to be #1, though, to embarass Mitt on his own turf.
I am a strong Newt supporter, but.... I need to be consistent.
When Newt was way ahead I urged Santorum to drop out... now I must do that same to Newt.
Out first priority must be to stop Romney, and to do that I now urge Newt to drop out so we can unite this party against Romney. It’s a shame that Mitt was able to demonize Newt so easily :(
At some point you have to wake up and smell the coffee. For those of us who will never support Romney as a nominee, this is great news.
This would be funny - Newt and Mitt so taken with their hatred for each other that they thought they could ignore Santorum - except that once vetted, Santorum will prove to be a shamefully weak candidate.
We are in trouble.
Not a fan of anyone running, they’re all pretty pathetic but anything is better then the scum in the White House.
Anyone but mini0bama.
Both are a good team.
[when Romney uses his superior resources to pulverize him, we could see this lead evaporate just as quickly as it was built up]
Have voters not figured the lying snake Romney out yet? Romney is going to live whoever wins, Newt or Santorm, limping into the general.
My main goal is to stop Romney, and Santorum appears to be the only one that can do that.
Thanks Rational Thought.
But when my primary comes round, I will definitely vote for whomever has the better chance of beating Romney.
I still have a hope that might be Newt, but that hope is thinning.
You are right, we are in trouble. For the life of me, I just can't get excited about Santorum, and people I've talked to feel the same way. He is a good conservative, but so is my Dad - and I can't see him as the president either.
This is not going to end well.
I agree with weak, only because he’s an inexperienced fighter of evil. Romney will compromise with this evil, Santorum will be defeated by this evil and the only one left is Newt who fought this evil, knows where it comes from amd knows how to send it back where it came from.
the best we Newt supporters could hope for now is a Santorum/Newt ticket. I think that would add some gravatas to Santorum
Newt should stay in for now, but Santorum and he should work together to take Romney out.
Santorum’s defeat of Romney’s severe inevitability is just great...for now. But Santorum doesn’t have the style to carry it through to victory in November. We need a real powerhouse to win. We need a brokered convention to nominate a real winner (and it’s not Jeb Bush.)
What's truly astonishing is none of these guys that I can tell (except Paul, who's rightly called a "moonbat" for other reasons) are talking about CUTTING GOVERNMENT even though we are on the precipice of this multi-trillion-dollar debt abyss.
How is this possible? We MUST have tax cuts. But they cannot be sustained without MAJOR CUTS IN GOVERNMENT starting with CUTTING ENORMOUS WASTE, USELESS CABINET DEPARTMENTS (most of them), and A LOT OF "ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS" (NOT defense, a legitimate government activity, even though our whole defense and intelligence capabilities need an overhaul because of 25 years of mismanagement since Reagan).
Santorums balanced-budget demand is of course suicide because the Leftists will use it as an excuse to raise taxes, the opposite of what needs to happen. There must be pressure to cut taxes and spending and that isnt done with a balanced budget amendment but with sound fiscal policy. A balanced budget amendment is a bad idea because it doesnt address our most critical political and economic problem: big government. It simply shifts the burden of the governments budget mismanagement problem onto the backs of the American people.
Santorum offers a balanced budget instead of less government. Thats a terrible choice. How can we not have one guy with his head screwed on straight talking about this stuff? Maybe we really are in the Final Days and God is starting to allow things accordingly.
Do you think the adoring McCain drives by Romney's mansion past midnight wearing night-vision goggles?
I have felt all along that the general will be decided by the economy. If the economy turns around, no one would beat Obama anyway. If on the other hand things stay bad.... then even your dad could win :P
Newt only has himself to blame. He’s made some huge mistakes in his past that his opponents are correct to use against him. I still like Newt, but his past affairs and working with liberals is a valid concern. He has proven to be very opportunistic. I think in the end with we need to stop Romney and in doing so end up with a candidate who can beat Obama.
He’s not even that good of a conservative, except on a few issues, where he’s very conservative. He’s a social conservative big government big union guy.
His goody two shoes image is a sham. He’s campaigned as nasty as anyone and he’s simply been ignored due to his perceived weakness. He’s benefitted from being ignored. That will change.
If Newt drops out, what’s left after Romney trashes him?
Santorum is a loser. Sorry, but he simply is.
If there’s a Gingrich/Santorum plan out there, they might be able to knock Romney out at the convention.
But 2-3 weeks from now, Santorum is going to be in a very different place. We must hope that he and Newt together have poll numbers higher than Romney’s.
Same here. I want Newt to win, but if Rick's momentum carries him to the front Saturday, then Newt needs to throw his weight behind the last credible Conservative in the race. rObomney-ism must be stopped.
Sadly, the poor turnout for the primaries confirm that you're hardly the only one sharing this opinion.
I’m for Newt, but fair is fair. Let’s just get rid of SnippyMcMittCare! Then the obamunist...I’ll buy you drink afterwards and we can laugh about it all.
I would think the main goal is to stop Obama.. if it’s Romney then it’s Romney and no matter how much conservatives may hate him and how pathetic the Republican candidates are, Obama is far worse.
I’m more worried about retaining the House and taking back the Senate.
U could definitely see Newt supporters going to Santorum. Conversely, I can somehow see Paul supporters going to Romney. It puts things in perspective.
I think they both need to stay in whil Romney continues his game of whack a mole. If Newt drops out and Santorum falls, Mitt wins. If one of them drops out, I prefer they wait until New York and California.
Well, we all know that they are going to “fix” those economic numbers by next fall. If we are going to win - we’re going to have to be able to counter that - PLUS - I really do think that an “event”, possibly on the magnitude of 9/11 is going to happen about that time too - that’s going to be a real game-changer. We have to be prepared for anything & it’s going to take a candidate that can think on his feet & be able to counter anything that will come along.
Actually, Rick’s 06 campaign was full of his own evil. He swerved WAY LEFT to try and make folks think that Rickie could “be a good little moderate and liberal too.”
I noticed Newt and also Chuck Norris are starting to hit that theme softly this week. Might be too late, but they have finally woken up.
The elite must be defeated, then we can unify as conservatives and march on the damned socialists.
The problem with Gingrich as a VP is that he would try to insert himself.
The President would be forced to assign him to typical VP duties — greeting ambassadors and attending state funerals, and Gingrich would abhor such a roll.
Then, VP Gingrich would become a definite pain in the side of the President, because Gingrich would not keep his mouth shut.
Gingrich as VP would not work and not be in the best interest of the President.
Iowa, population 3 million; caucus participants: 120,000.
Colorado, population 5 million; caucus participants: 66,000.
Seems like a lot of folks staying home already...
Same here. Romney is the lighter side of Obama. I will not vote for ANY side of that Marxist.
Coulter already on Fox and Friend dissing Santorum.....Must have gotten a three AM call to action.
Actually, I think this may a good thing for Newt, Santorum is scorching romney effectively, Newt can stand by and watch the destruction take place without looking ‘negative’.
It’s the ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ scenario. Newt can then pick the best time to surge to finish line.
Mitt can stop his slide NOW. All he has to do is announce Jebbie or McPain for that matter as his running mate. This would thrill the establishment beyond words.
The economy is dismal. Gas prices are going up each week. And yet Obama still leads in the polls. In an election year where "anyone could beat Obama", it seems the GOP found the only four guys who can't. By every indicator, Obama should be shopping for a house right now!
Sorry to be a wet blanket but, damn, I'm just not feeling very optimistic. And the poor primary turnout seems to be the elephant in the room that everyone is ignoring. Good Lord, is this sorry bunch the best we could find?!?!?
You’re correct that Santorum tried to veer to the centre, which was a mistake. His opponent played the charade of being pro-life, which removed the key distinction that Santorum had against his opponents in his first two victories. He also suffered from his support for Specter and the general backlash against Bush. It was a perfect storm that brought Santorum down, some of which was his own doing, but I don’t think there was anyone who could have held that seat in those circumstances.
Everyone STOP IT! We are going to win this thing. We want the perfect candidate, isnt going to happen. Buck up and get behind the candidate whomever wins! As far as the “dork” complex of Santorum this could be in our benefit... Dorks are cool too! Calm, boring, patient, loving, is all good things. :)
I’d like to take this opportunity to state the obvious; folks - we’re still being led around by the nose by POLLS!!! This is why we’re going to lose this election!
From the beginning of this election - conservatives have let themselves be bounced like a ping pong ball from candidate to candidate, depending on who the media tells them is ahead in the polls. A lot of good conservative candidates have been destroyed by this.
Everyone knows that I have been a Perry supporter from the git-go - I looked at his credentials & decided for myself that he was the best qualified. But his gaffes...you say? I don’t care about that! He has a proven record. When you let the media tell you that someone with the credentials of Rick Perry cannot be president because he gaffed some debates - you let THEM control the discussion.
Now we are stuck with four candidates that were NO ONE’S first choice! We blew it!
Santorum is the person at the bottom of everyone’s list of acceptable candidates.
He doesn’t stink but doesn’t smell very good either. He’s a career politician who lost his seat in a landslide defeat to one of the dumbest senators in congress today.
And unlike Newt, he’s an establishment candidate who endorsed Specter (who voted for Obamacare), and Romney in the primary of ‘08. He’s on record saying he’s against the tea party.
Santorum vs. Obama will be painful to watch. I hope there’s a better solution.
The way I look at it, if people don't read the book now, Axelrod will make sure she gets all the attention to make it a best seller after Romney gets the nomination. The American people will be stuck with BO for four more years.
