Pro-Romney Group Buys $500,000 In Michigan TV Ads (Newt Targeted)
NY Times ^ | February 13, 2012 | Jeremy W. Peters

Posted on 02/13/2012 3:48:30 PM PST by red flanker

Mitt Romney is getting some heavy air support in Michigan — the state where he was born and raised — as the “super PAC” supporting him invests almost $500,000 on television ads there.

According to someone who tracks Republican media spending, Restore Our Future has committed just over $470,000 for commercials starting Tuesday and set to run through Feb. 20. That marks the group’s largest purchase yet in Michigan, where it will have spent more than $700,000 on ads by next week.

The group said Monday that it would continue for now to run an ad called “Risk” that targets Newt Gingrich using images and attacks that have by now become familiar advertising fodder. It cites the proliferation of earmarks during his tenure as House speaker and shows a shot of him sitting with Nancy Pelosi on a couch in front of the Capitol, a shot taken from a public service announcement on global warming.

You’d like this:

“Rick Santorum participated in raiding the federal treasury as an earmarxist, perfectly happy to pork away on Pennsylvania’s behalf. He did not join conservatives who fought against No Child Left Behind. He did not join conservatives who fought against the prescription drug benefit.

Rick Santorum was part of the problem in Washington. He was one of the Republicans the public rejected in 2006. The voters in Pennsylvania rejected him in 2006 because of his and the Republicans’ profligate ways. Along with Tom DeLay, Rick Santorum led the K Street Project, which traded perks for lobbyists for money for the GOP funded with your tax dollars through earmarks and pork projects.

Sure, you can say 2006 was a bad year for Republicans, but in 2006 Rick Santorum fell 18 percentage points behind his Democratic rival and his defeat and terrible campaign can be linked to the loss of four Pennsylvania house seats.

That was not a defeat for Rick Santorum. It was punishment. He is a pro-life statist and I see nothing in his career since leaving Washington that shows he has changed his ways”

At the end of the day (his Congressman career) the final count is terrifying: Santorum sponsored or co-sponsored 51 bills to increase spending and failed to sponsor or co-sponsor a SINGLE spending cut bill.

Tell me again how true conservative Rick is. With him no chance of a balanced budget, tax cuts or reducing the deficit. He’s a pro-big government, pro-more spending and pro-life nanny-statist...

His supporters are social conservatives that view him as a man of God. They are not as concerned about his fiscal policies which are liberal. Our economy is dire straits.
Many of the moral issues will be decided in the SCOTUS and God help us with judges like Sonia Sotomyer (Santorum voted for her) sitting up there we are in trouble. Also, Spector is not pro LIFE but Santorum supported HIM. He supported TWO men that are for socialized medicine...Romney and Spector and a judge that is an extremist. I do not trust Santorum

America cannot afford Santorum.

Only $90 million?

“Santorum sponsored at least two Senate bills and pushed to amend a mammoth Medicare overhaul to include the extra spending (total $400 million), which would have benefited Universal Health Services, a Pennsylvania-based hospital management company with facilities in Puerto Rico. If it seems at odds with the small-government philosophy Mr. Santorum now espouses in his presidential campaign, it was in line with his legislative efforts to help businesses in his state.

Within months of leaving the Senate (in 2006), Mr. Santorum joined the board of Universal Health Services, where he collected $395,000 in director’s fees and stock options before resigning last year.”

And while you folks are so damn worried about Santorum, MITT ROMNEY raised taxes and fees and increased spending as Massachusetts governor. That's not to mention Romneycare and a gun ban.

Here is REALITY.

This thread is about Romney's PAC buying ads in Michigan. (and it looks like now that Santorum will be the target of them instead) Here, Newt is polling third or fourth. He knows this and isn't competing here. That's not an attack. He's competing elsewhere.

Three polls have Santorum leading Romney here in Michigan. Romney has a chance at losing the state where he was born and his dad was governor. Newt or Ron Paul won't beat Romney here in Michigan. Santorum has a chance to do so. If Santorum wins here, both Newt and Santorum win as it shatters Romney's number one argument. "I'm the electable one."

If you want to stop Santorum, do it in states where it's between Santorum and Newt with Romney holding the bag. Right now, I'm more worried about an actual RINO than I am two centrist candidates.

Fabulous source there and a great post!

Eric is wild and crazy like a fox in his research and opinion pieces. To see him on CNN, smooth and articulate, to the point, and always succinct is awesome, since we know how passionate he can actually get, and he is I believe extraordinarily courageous to step out as he does for or against someone, call them by name, and then run so hard with the flag on them, I just find it very interesting. He was a Perry fan unusually early for a political observer but willing to take the heat for it.

Nice post. I appreciate it.

You know, I really believe that Newt Gingrich is the BEST conservative candidate the Republicans have had since ... Ronald Reagan.

If the Republican voters fail to see that, and don’t nominate Newt as the GOP candidate for the national election, they will share the responsibility with Obama, in his second term, for the Constitution death and the Republic as we knew it.

Neither Mitt, Rick, Jeb or Sarah can avoid the catastrophe of 0’s second term. You need for that a big elephant, supremely intelligent, at the complete opposite side of the political spectrum, a ferocious debater-fighter with an implacable knowledge of all the aspects of government, a solid plan, and an iron will.

Just think at the enormous war machine Obama will have at his disposal: $1 billion cash, all the media for him, pounding relentlessly the Republican candidate 24/24 ...

WHO other than Newton can overcome such a Niagara torrent?

I didn’t know that but it goes along with his record of ‘not conservative’. He’s big gov’t with his controlling other’s ‘rights’. So he sided with sending jobs off shore, higher taxes added to the product for punishment, and stealing the God-given rights of others. He’s not conservative never mind ‘the most’. His supporters are RINO’s - basically rats disguising themselves for credibility.

Isn’t it enough to say that Santorum does not have the vision or guts to turn this country around? Is that bashing? Why Newt? Because he’s done it before! In fact, he is the last one to get anything conservative done on a large scale since Reagan. The country’s been going down hill ever since Newt was forced out of leadership by the RINO’s.

Dede Scozzafava Endorsement

Newt has admitted it was a mistake to back Dede Scozzafava, the Republican nominee in the 2009 NY-23 special election.

Whether it was helping to build the Republican Party of Georgia back when Democrats controlled the entire state or leading the nationwide effort in 1994 to break 40 years of Democratic rule in the House, Newt has always tried to advance the cause of a truly conservative Republican party. This has always meant supporting the most conservative nominee possible as selected by Republican primary voters.

Therefore, Newt will almost always back the nominee of the Republican party and not back an independent candidate in a race against a Democratic candidate.

Newt still believes in this principle, however, he has admitted it was a mistake to back Dede Scozzafava, the Republican nominee in the 2009 NY-23 special election. Although she was the Republican nominee, the problem was that Republican primary voters did not pick her, the local party leaders did, otherwise her liberal views would have prevented her from becoming the nominee. The Conservative Party candidate whom Scozzafava was running against, Doug Hoffman, recently remarked about Newt’s endorsement of his rival, “I would advise other conservative republicans: Don’t hold this against him.”

http://www.newt.org/answers#GlobalWarming

Global Warming/Cap and Trade

Newt does not believe there is a settled scientific conclusion about whether industrial development has dramatically contributed to a warming of the atmosphere.

Newt absolutely opposes “cap and trade” as well as any system of taxing carbon emissions. He testified before Congress against it in 2009 and led a grassroots effort while the Chairman of American Solutions to block its passage in the House and Senate.

Newt believes that cap and trade would kill hundreds of thousands of American jobs, cause electricity and fuel prices to skyrocket, and make America poorer. In contrast, Gingrich believes the best way to protect the environment is through markets, incentives, and entrepreneurs, who quite often are deploying innovative new technologies.

As for the question of whether industrial development has dramatically contributed to a warming of the atmosphere, Newt has noted there is no settled scientific conclusion. Many scientists believe it is the case. Others do not. But this unsettled scientific question has nothing to do with the best approach to protecting our environment, which is always markets, incentives, and entrepreneurs creating better and more efficient products and services.

Q: So why did Newt do the ad with Nancy Pelosi in 2007 calling for action to address climate change?

Newt does not believe there is a settled scientific conclusion about whether industrial development has dramatically contributed to a warming of the atmosphere.

Through his entire career, Newt has supported pro-market, pro-entrepreneur, innovative solutions to our environmental challenges, which he believes are superior to the liberal pro-bureaucracy, pro-tax, pro-regulation approach to the environment.

Newt believes that conservatives cannot be absent from the conversation about the environment and instead that conservatives must offer and explain why conservative solutions are better. Unfortunately, the attempt to get that message out through the ad with Nancy Pelosi failed. On November 8, 2011, Newt told FOX News’ Bret Baier that doing that commercial with Pelosi was “probably the dumbest single thing I’ve ever done”.

Newt will continue to oppose the Democrats’ destructive cap-and-trade and carbon tax proposals, continue to support expanded domestic oil and gas drilling, and continue to fight for a fundamental replacement of the job-killing Environmental Protection Agency with an Environmental Solutions Agency.

Regarding Newts “record”, I look at things that matter rather than campaign propaganda. On on issue after issue in the debates, I’ve heard Newt say “Rick is right on that” or “Rick was a leader” on this or that issue.

I think a moon base while we’re trillions in debt is a dumb idea. I’ll also wager that Newt’s own campaign will attest that his method of attacking Romney on Bain was mis-directed, mis-guided...oh yea, Newt’s own words “a mistake”.

There is an article earlier today regarding “refocusing” after sliding to 4th in many polls, but I’m not following Newt’s campaign around with a shovel, nor do I troll his threads like you and other spammers of Santorum threads do.

That said, there are plenty of examples where Newt has REVERSED course, but the main issue is that what Newt says now is not what he’s always promoted. Santorum authored Health Savings Accounts while in Congress, Newt pushed for government-mandated single payer healthcare.

What matters most is electing a candidate to stand up against the culture of death pushed by the DUmocrats. The erosion of our liberty and freedom is a primary consern and goes into every issue. But then I guess we should all just “relax and accept it”, just like Newt says....lest we pi$$ off the BIG TENT “moderates”....

If you cannot get RIGHT TO LIFE or THE MEANS TO DEFEND IT correct, how can you claim to be a conservative? If a candidate gets those three correct they are more likely to get all the other issues correct as well.

Newt’s “off-the-reservation” moments are too numerous, too freguent, and increasingly too recent. Santorum has been consistent in his pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-second amendment stance....Newt has been all over the map trying to appeal to “moderates” and JACKASSES. His last line of attack wasn’t gaining traction and only hurt his cause, and it shows. Newt still needs a his only competition out of the way to get a boost where Rick just needs to stick to his message and he defeats both Romney and Obama.

On on issue after issue in the debates, I’ve heard Newt say “Rick is right on that” or “Rick was a leader” on this or that issue.

Haha, WHAT lies and spin. This video shows that JUST THE OPPOSITE WAS TRUE. Everyone in the debates kept saying Newt was right on everything. Barely anyone ever said Rick was right on anything, but you're free to dig up those quotes if you can.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2aIDSIaCPk

Of course you know that Newt proposed NO new spending for his moon exploration. He plans to beat China there by repurposing the NASA budget and incentivizing private companies to get us there.

Remember Santorum saying in the debates that voting for Medicare Part D was a mistake? Or when Rick told Trump that he was trying to learn from the mistakes he made when he lost the 2006 election by almost 20 points? Or when Rick mistakenly said at a town hall that remark about black people? Or when he tripped over his words as usual and had to explain later what he meant about women not serving in combat?

People can click my name to scroll through my profile and see the explanations to clear up your LYING about Newt's pro-life and pro-gun record.
