Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is back again using a U.S. Navy warship as a vessel of political pandering. At a hurriedly convened Pentagon ceremony Friday, Mr. Mabus announced that the next littoral combat ship, LCS-11, would be named for former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Arizona Democrat. Mrs. Giffords recently resigned her congressional seat to focus on recovering from wounds she received in a tragic January 2011 shooting. There are many appropriate ways to honor Mrs. Giffords, but this is not one of them.

Political hackery ping.
Thank you for posting the link to NoMurthaShip.com, it is an absolute travesty that SECNAV Ray Mabus is naming a U.S. Navy ship after the corrupt John Murtha!
I’m sorry that this woman took a bullet because of a nutcase, but to say that she deserves a ship named after her shows complete disrespect for a time-honored tradition.
The only thing that should be named after Murtha is a Port-a-John pumper truck.
Next we’ll have the USS Barney Frank - accommodates large torpedos.
Amen to that!
Thank you for the ping. I shall with hold my thoughts, and ask the Heavenly Father to protect our ‘brave’ souls that freely give of themselves to protect US.
It really seems to me that the Navy is setting itself up for much additional on-board maintenance!
If I were stationed on a ship named “Medgar Evers”; “Cesar Chavez”; or scumbag “John Murtha”; I'd be joining the rest of the crew in pissing all over the deck, the berthing quarters, even the bridge, to confront the injustice!
According to critics, the LCS is under-armed, and severely lacking in anti-missile and anti-air defense. The irony of naming the ship after a gunshot victim will not be missed by those serving aboard her, when the USS Giffords is sent into a dangerous region.
Jaz, there's 1,890 signatures on the petition. I need to put a boot in Cpt. Bailey's butt, this is going too slow! :o)
As a former sailor and Navy brat, this disturbs me in so many ways.
I understand many people find it odd, but I feel that a ship is much more than the physical components it is built from.
Particularly with warships.
I cannot explain it, but using it as a piece of political candy or a partisan crowbar is offensive in ways other than the obvious.
Ann Coulter once said liberals seem to enjoy lying for the sheer fun or enjoyment of it, just to see how much people will swallow before someone is moved to speak out.
For them, this is a triple crown: They can destroy and demoralize the military, use this as a political tool (for gun control, payback and the like) all while having loads of fun poking conservatives and the military in the eye because they just plain enjoy it.
I once came across a picture of a US Cruiser being broken down for scrap. It’s main guns, were all facing forward and the bridge and superstructure were intact.
The bow back to the main battery was gone.
I know some people just won’t understand, but my first thought was a human face with the nose cut off. It looked completely disfigured, just...wrong. And sad.
When I heard they named this ship after this woman, it hit me the same way, but worse because it was tinged with maliciousness and and intentional disrespect.
Do it, Smooth. :-)
Maybe more FReepers will sign before you have to though. LOL!
LOL, I notice that he did highlight the petition link like I asked him to!
>> It is not appropriate to name a U.S. Navy ship after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords though what happened to her is very sad.
A Federal Conservative judge was murdered by the same shooter. Why not name the ship after him?
Once you accepted the USS Vinson, the USS Ford, the USS HW Bush and, yes, the USS Reagan, you made this inevitable.
And a great big load of seamen!
