At the moment Rick Santorum appears to be overtaking Newt Gingrich as the principal challenger to Mitt Romney. Santorum has won more contests than Gingrich (who has won only one), has more delegates, and leads him in the polls. In at least one poll, he also leads Romney. It isn’t yet a Romney–Santorum contest, but it could be headed that way.
We hope so. Gingrich’s verbal and intellectual talents should make him a resource for any future Republican president. But it would be a grave mistake for the party to make someone with such poor judgment and persistent unpopularity its presidential nominee.
It is not clear whether Gingrich remains in the race because he still believes he could become president next year or because he wants to avenge his wounded pride: an ambiguity that suggests the problem with him as a leader. When he led Santorum in the polls, he urged the Pennsylvanian to leave the race. On his own arguments the proper course for him now is to endorse Santorum and exit.
Santorum has been conducting himself rather impressively in his moments of triumph and avoiding characteristic temptations. He is doing his best to keep the press from dismissing him as merely a “social-issues candidate.” His recent remark that losing his Senate seat in 2006 taught him the importance of humility suggests an appealing self-awareness.
And he has rightly identified the declining stability of middle-class families as a threat to the American experiment, even if his proposed solutions are poorly designed. But sensible policies, important as they are, are not the immediate challenge for his candidacy. Proving he can run a national campaign is.
Romney remains the undramatic figure at the center of the primaries’ drama. Lack of enthusiasm for him...

Dunno if they’re hedging their bets or trying to extricate themselves from the corner into which they stupidly and prematurely painted themselves.
I’ve also noted their coverage of the recent HHS policy on contraception. Since NR is populated with a surfeit of Catholics, it has been amusing to watch how they’ve covered this.

The ad’s wording and tone also borrows a read-between-the-lines theme that front-runner Mitt Romney has been using against Gingrich – that he is mentally unstable and therefore unfit for the presidency. In addition to liberal use of the word “insanity,” a digital press release accompanying the ad makes note of “Gingrich’s erratic behavior” and “wild ideas.”
The text of the radio ad, which the Santorum campaign says will be aired nationally beginning
Friday, says, “Reckless spending has led to a 15-trillion-dollar national debt. That’s $50,000 of debt for every person in America, and it’s crushing our economy. And what’s Newt Gingrich suggest? Spending half a trillion dollars on a moon colony.”
Gingrich’s voice is heard describing his plan for permanent base on the moon by his second term as president, followed by the voice over saying, “Gingrich’s idea is fiscal insanity. And another reason true conservatives are uniting behind Rick Santorum.”
Rick the Prick well knows that Gingrich proposed enroling private companies in the realisation of future space programs, not with federal money, but he’s lying through the teeth in Romney’s style. Screw him and the guy he endorsed in 2008.
Four years more of Obama is the announced death of the Constitution and the people’s rights protected by it, first of all freedom of opinion and faith. Americans have a few months to decide if they want or no to live in a free country.
I totally agree with you on this. Obama gave us a taste of what is to come when he tried to force Christian agencies to give out contraceptives. Now he back tracked on this ONLY because the press was bad and could affect the election. After November, he would do this. Hear the complaints, but this time IGNORE it because he would have nothing to lose since he would not be up for reelection. If Obama is reelected, we are in DEEP trouble IMHO.
Santorum must stay home to take care of his kids, as he himself advised Sarah Palin.

However, if the voters don’t vote for Newt and vote for Santorum who is 100 percent better than Obama, you better vote for Santorum or we really will be in bad shape. The birth control demands on Christians will be the beginning of what is to come. He has already made laws and EOs and even put people into power without Congress’ permission and nobody blinked. Can you imagine what he will do without fear of reelection. I think you better think about that or you will leave your children and grandchildren in a dire straights. I think anybody over 40 will be ok regardless but those under 40 will be in huge trouble with what is to come from a 2nd Obama administration. This election is very important. I don’t believe that Newt would like your attitude by the way.
This is a continuation by the GOP-E against the integrity and stability of Newt Gingrich. It is entirely and completely a cowardly, lying, spiteful, mean-spirited, elitest attack.
That said, BOTH the records of Newt and those of Rick are conservative records. I believe Newt had an ACU average of about 88% and Rick had one of 80%.
The Romney-bots are busy dredging up the 12% of Newt's votes and the 20% of Rick's votes that were not pristine conservatism, and they are using those to cause in-fighting among conservatives so that BOTH candidates are injured and Romney emerges the winner.
We KNOW Romney's game by now but we keep playing into his hands even now; even down to 2 remaining conservatives we are content to allow Romney to manipulate us.

South Carolina is a excellent example. The polls for days and days pretended Mitt will be the winner. We know how that turned out.
To be fair, the minute Newt had that great debate, the polls immediately changed. Nobody was surprised that Newt won SC.
