Gingrich's Main Backer Plays Two Angles (Report: Adelson after Rick)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 2-14-12 | Mundy

Billionaire Sheldon Adelson, by far the biggest financial backer of Newt Gingrich's presidential bid, is preparing to open his wallet again. But this time, the casino magnate appears to have more than one agenda.

In a bit of political chess, Mr. Adelson is ready to not only directly support the former House speaker in the Republican primary, but to use his cash to push Rick Santorum from his position atop the latest national polls, according to people to have discussed the matter with Mr. Adelson.

Sheldon Adelson, shown with his wife, Miriam, at a Nevada caucus meeting in Summerlin, Nev., could give an additional $10 million to Newt Gingrich.

If Mr. Gingrich could afford to continue campaigning, one of those people said, he might be able to draw off conservative and evangelical voters from Mr. Santorum, improving the chances of Mitt Romney, who Mr. Adelson believes has a better chance to win November's general election.

"Sheldon says we all have to keep our eyes on the goal here—beating Obama," said a person who talked with Mr. Adelson.

According to the people who have discussed the matter, Mr. Adelson could give an additional $10 million or more to an independent group supporting Mr. Gingrich before Super Tuesday, March 6, a likely pivotal day when 10 states go to the polls. The Adelson family has already given $11 million to support Mr. Gingrich since December.

Mr. Adelson has repeatedly declined to comment on his donations. He "holds his cards tight to the chest because this has been such a seesaw primary you don't know where it's going to go," said Andy Abboud, vice president for government relations at Las Vegas Sands Corp.... (snip)

I don't believe Money Man is after Rick-- I think it's his cover to avoid pressure from Romney.

But, Newt Skywalker will rise again!

He's doing it to help Romney and says so.

Adelson sounds like what Ross Perot did, drop out, then get back in, but, in this case, drop support for Newt, and now come back in to support Newt.

With Adelson , Newt sounds as desperate with spending money like Romney is desperate with spending money to take out their opponent...... sorry, people will see through this and see both Romney and Newt as trivial in trying to buy people’s votes.

IF ? Rick Santorum is the supposed big liberal that the Newt supporters paint and smear him as, why then ? does Newt need Adelson to take Rick Santorum down ? could it be that Rick’s message is resonating with Conservatives and those in the Tea Party ?

Just my opinion- Adelson supports Newt totally-—not Romney. But, every article I’ve read on this subject going back months, always has a component where the Romney camp is pressuring him not to give Newt money.

An example would be the recent claim by Bloomberg News (Romney rag) that Adelson wasn’t going to give Newt any money. Clearly, the story was fabricated to create the impression that Newt had no source of big funding- thus diminishing his candidacy.

Now, if you’re Adelson, I have to imagine you don’t want to tick off a guy like Romney-especially if he ends up President.

So, you give money to Newt— and you promulgate the story that you’re doing it to benefit Romney.

Exactly. This still works out for us. Hopefully we get a brokered convention at this time and pray we get a conservative we can live with at the top of the ticket and that can win in November.

I give Newt credit...he said FU to Romeny’s smear machine and said guess what? I won’t let you win like this and I’m going to pull you into the mud pit you just threw me in! I hope this is a lesson for Republicans in the future—don’t attack each other like Romney did—he started it and I love that Newt is going nuclear. He’s taking one for the team to take Romney out.

Maybe Sheldon Adelson is a latter day Haym Salomon.

This time a Jewish financer is fighting against Communism by financing the tea party revolution instead of against the British during the Revolutionary war.

Perhaps ? Adelson behind the scenes got both Newt and Romney tag teaming against Rick, after all ? Newt has gone on record of hinting of having Romney on his short list as VP a few months ago in a CNN interview.
How come ? Adelson supports Newt and would support Romney if Romney got the nomination ? seem that if either one of them get's the nomination, Romney would pick Newt as his VP, and if Newt get's the nomination, Newt will pick Romney as his VP, after all ? they got the guy with big money to support both.
The Newt supporters are being railroaded, bamboozled.. just to enamored with the American Idol Presidential candidate to see the truth.

When in Vegas, Newt said Adelson just wants anti-Israel Obama gone no matter what and so if Newt can’t make it and Adelson thinks Romney can, he will support Romney. But Santorum is gaining ground steadily over and above Romney. Adelson may well go with Santorum if this trend continues.

On Facebook it is being said that Romney has bought all the seats at the debate next week in AZ and is filling them with his supporters.

Adelson openly admits to giving to Gingrich to help Romney.

Only Gingrich can stop it, if he wants to.

I still think Newt is the best man for the job. He has outlined what he will do if elected President. I think Newt has a better handle on foreign policy and so does Col. Ollie North and others. The only thing I have heard from Santorum say is that he will repeal Obama Care. GO NEWT GO!
