Mountain man on the loose: Armed recluse has eluded capture for five years
Daily Mail ^ | 2/17/12 | Associated Press

He's eluded authorities for more than five years, a mountain man who roams the wilderness of southern Utah, breaking into remote cabins in winter, living in luxury off hot food, alcohol and coffee before stealing provisions and vanishing into the woods.

Investigators have clawed for clues, scouring cabins for fingerprints that match no one and chasing reports of brief encounters only to come up short, always a step behind the mysterious recluse.

They've found abandoned camps, dozens of guns, high-end outdoor gear stolen from the homes and trash strewn around the forest floor.

But the man authorities say is armed and dangerous and responsible for more than two dozen burglaries has continued to outrun the law across a swath of mountains not far from Zion National Park.

He's roamed across 1,000 square miles of rugged wilderness where snow can pile 10 feet deep in winter.

And while there have been no violent confrontations, detectives say he's a time bomb.

The coffee and alcohol the survivalist favors plays into some cabin owners' assessment that he could be a castaway from the nearby twin towns of Hildale or Colorado City on the Utah-Arizona border. The so-called lost boys are said to be regularly booted from the polygamous sect there by elders looking to increase their marriage opportunities with young women.

Heck I'd give the guy my cabin to use if he agreed to stop stealing...

You are right. If I was some of those wealthy cabin owners I hire the guy to provide security for my place.

When the left thinks of TEA party members, this is the image they get.

I view what he is doing as the least egregious form of theft, for survival rather than for profit. He’s likely saved the taxpayers more than he has stolen anyway by living off the grid (not including investigation costs). He’d still have to stop stealing to get any support from me though as I noted.

Anyone notice Al Gore has been strangely missing for the last year or so? I’m thinking he headed to the mountains ...

The coffee and alcohol the survivalist favors...

...so we know he isn't a Mormon...

He needs to steal dozens of guns for his own survival?

A couple guns maybe, not dozens.

I know a couple of guys in Northern Michigan who keep an eye on remote houses during the winters. Some people pay with cash, others food and firewood. Its kind of an ideal life for someone who likes to be alone like that.

"I view what he is doing as the least egregious form of theft, for survival rather than for profit."

Rationalization. At some point, his need for survival will include holding a gun to somebody's head. He's a predator exhibiting predatory behaviour, and investigators correctly assessed that he will indeed grow increasingly destructive and violent. The first face-to-face encounter with a cabin occupant, intended or not, will be unpleasant in the extreme.

I’d agree more with you if he wasn’t tapping into liquor cabinets as well. It also sounds like he’s just dumping crap all over the place instead of making the best use of everything he has.

the article says that he leaves some cabins in bad shape, dirty etc., but others he leaves clean and tidy. that actually made me think that there are TWO people doing this, maybe. one who leaves things tidy, and the other who likes to vandalize stuff. (?)

Interesting rifle he carries, thats a Remington Mohawk and it came in limited calibers with 308 and 350 remington mag being the largest. I don’t see him carring a 350 but if he did ammo is not that easy to find. Should he slip into town every now and then for supplies that might be a pretty good thing to know. Nice Leupold scope also.

Did you see his camp or read where he defaces property and shoots holes into people’s cabins? Great guy!

Or perhaps he only sullies the cabins that show evidence of being owned by liberals...

In the article:

lately he has been leaving the cabins in disarray and riddled with bullets after defacing religious icons, and a recent note left behind in one cabin warned, ‘Get off my mountain.’

Other parts talk about anti-religious. It may be if he finds religious items, he trashes the place.
