NASA Shelves Ambitious Flagship Missions to Other Planets

Proposed budget cuts are forcing NASA to suspend plans for ambitious, expensive missions to destinations throughout the solar system.

The White House's budget request for 2013, which was released Monday (Feb. 13), keeps overall NASA funding flat but allocates just $1.2 billion to the space agency's planetary science program. That's a 20 percent cut from the current allotment of $1.5 billion, and further reductions are expected over the next several years.

NASA officials say this funding picture leaves no room for multibillion-dollar "flagship" planetary missions — a departure for the space agency, which has launched roughly one such effort per decade since the 1970s. Those missions include the Cassini spacecraft's study of the Saturn system and the so-called Grand Tour of the solar system by the twin Voyager spacecraft.

20 % cut,,,and that's only the beginning. I knew dumbo wouldn't be satisfied with ending our manned space program. Now he will destroy our un-manned program as well. The future truly belongs to China as the US dives headlong into the trash heap of history.

Every spare penny is eventually going to Entitlements and Interest payments. Before this is over, NASA’s only purpose will be boosting the self esteem of minority high school students.

Yup. And thats what dumbo is all about,,,destruction. I’m sure he has a better use for the money from the latest space program cuts,,,like giving it to the muslim brotherhood.

So much for the fantasy that Obama was some kind of “science president”.

He sickens me to the core.

We need the money for wealth redistribution and stealth reparations.

Bolden told the truth when he told the Arab press that obama had tasked him with making nasa a “muslim outreach” program. Infuriating.

Open source it and we’ll build these on our own. There are many private space pioneers now like Bigelow, SpaceX, etc, plus the very contractors building these projects now. These budgets are not in the petty cash of one private company, but if it is opened up, it could be done. I’d contribute my time and effort to send a probe to Mars.

Rest assured that NASA will boost funding for Global Warming and muslim outreach. All that rockety science stuff just gets in the way of the new agenda.

"To destroy a people, destroy their dreams."

For too many Americans, their dream is a free lunch, and the Obama school systems are turning more of them out all the time.

Every time American jobs are outsourced, a portion of those become dependent new democrat voters.

Every single time, more and more, democrat voters.

“Free trade” creates democrat voters. Yet many erstwhile conservatives continue to believe it’s somehow good for us.

There is no other subject, on which so many on our side, stubbornly continue to adhere to a policy so plainly destructive to the United States of America.

None. But it’s a really big one.

America first. Say it, and think about it.

“America first”.

Every spare penny is eventually going to Entitlements and Interest payments.

Sadly, the United States no longer has a sufficient birth rate to support such ambitious long-term projects like interplanetary space exploration. Every current projection shows that future generations will need to be taxed at previously unseen levels just to support a disproportionately large elderly population. Sustainable exploratory space programs are a luxury of a growing population, not ours.

For persepctive, we currently have a population of about 330M in this country. We had about 180M or so during the Space race. And...we were fighting the Vietnam war at the same time.

Its not a people problem, its an allocation of fund problem. We are paying for a lot of Human Services that we weren’t in the 60s. The Government has supplanted the traditional family and is also acting as a gigantic wealth transfer engine—that is the problem.
