RALEIGH, N.C. — Two of the best players in North Carolina State history were thrown out of the Wolfpack’s 76-62 loss to No. 20 Florida State on Saturday.

Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani were in the stands behind the scorer’s table when they were tossed by official Karl Hess with about 6½ minutes left.

Is it constitutional for a referee to eject fans that are exercising their constitutional rights to disagree with their decisions?

The rule book gives them authority to do so.

Actually, the 27th amendment gives a referee the right to eject jerks being jerks.

Forget ex-players! There are all sorts of great stories about Baseball Playre Rabbit Maranville and the umpires. I couldn't find the one I (vaguely) remembered but Google found a whole bunch I didn't know about.

Kark Hess is living proof that ineptitude won’t get you fired if you’re an NCAA ref. He is consistently one of the worst NCAA refs every year.

But I don't think anyone in the stands would say Tom and Chris were being jerks. Are you saying anyone who disagrees deserves to be silenced?

The rule book gives them authority to do so.

That is one interpretation. Let me tell you this... I watched a show on the History channel about the rise of the Nazis. When they started their propaganda demonizing the Jewish people, 100,000 non-Jews were arrested, beaten or disappeared.

And their crime? Standing up and saying, "Hey wait a minute. The Jewish people are not whom you say they are." After ten years of constant propaganda, the population of Germany had no problem with the Final Solution.

So back to you... are you still saying it is OK for a referee to throw out anyone who did not threaten harm or create a hostile situation?

Sounds like the way they treat Republicans.

The WaPo got Hess’s name wrong. It is Blind Karl Hess.

No, I’m sure he ejected them because they were respectfully disagreeing.

Did you know that same referee moments before ejecting Tom and Chris, tried to eject a college student for saying "You suck?" And that referee was told he couldn't do it because it wasn't a strong enough reason.

So I ask again, can a referee throw out anyone for being a fan when the fan did not threaten or create a hostile situation?

Gugliotta...went to Golden State for Chris Webber, along with a package including a 1st round pick that became Vince Carter (Warriors traded him too). Come to think of it, Jeremy Lin was Warriors property as well. Damn, there must be something in the water in California. Probably Chromium-6.

That's probably why I don't go to very many sports events or movies anymore. I went to games because it was fun and I enjoyed it. I rooted for the home team, but I respected our opponents. If a ref made a bad call, I made my displeasure known. But that's not the way it is anymore. Nowadays, there always seem to be more than a handful of professional jerks at the game.
Corchiani himself admitted, "We're not denying we were all over him, but I've been doing that every game I've been at since I retired," said Corchiani, who said he attends just about every N.C. State game. "That's homecourt advantage. But again, we never used profanity or crossed the line. We were just on him about some of the calls he made."
These two morons had their kids with them. And do you and your family want to sit in font of some idiot who screams, "You suck"every ten minutes? Apparently crap like this is acceptable today, and that's very sad because they ruin it for all those people who bring their wives and kids to a game to enjoy themselves. These two guys are jerks and I'm glad the ref threw them out.

ACC refs are probably testy since they called such a bad game at Duke last week.

As a former umpire in baseball, I know that rule 9.02C (at least that was what it was then) allows for the umpire to basically do whatever he wishes as far as the field goes, as long as it doesn’t conflict with other rules in the book. That includes removing fans that may be hindering the game. And that is the umpire’s judgement on that call.

I am pretty sure that basketball, football, and other games as well, have some variation of that rule.

I'll say that if the arena is full of Nazis then, no, it's not OK.
