With their unemployment-insurance checks running out, some of the country’s long-term jobless are scrambling to fill the gap by filing claims for mental illness and other disabilities with Social Security — a surge that hobbles taxpayers and making the employment rate look healthier than it should as these people drop out of the job statistics.

America has truly become a fool’s paradise as we print fake money to hand out benefits to everyone.

Mental illness? Perhaps they have a point (assuming they vote Democrat), n'est ce pas?

In my county (Santa Cruz, CA). psych disabilities are the single largest source of economic cash flow.

Of course, in Santa Cruz, it just might be true.

Every man is responsible for his own deeds and no one can make you file for disability if you don’t want it. But there is a group of lawyers (you’ve probably seen their commercials) who are driving some of this filing for disability. They, of course, make a tidy sum if they win you disability. Plus I believe social workers encourage it, just haven’t figured out why.

I have MS...I guess technically I’d be classified as diabled. I need an implanted Baclofen pump that drips medicine directly onto my spine in order to have mobility in my legs and control spasticity, and the last time I was in the hospital for surgery on the pump the social worker came to my room and basically urged me to file for disability.

I explained to her that I had a job, and I didn’t need disability (I do have to work from home, but I work a full week...well more than a full week, I’m a bit of a workaholic, LOL.) She was rather persistent in her insistence that I’d qualify for diability...and I was rather insistent in wondering how that could be since I was able to work.

I just haven’t figured out her angle yet. I know why the lawyers push for filing for disability, they get paid if they win it for you. But why a social worker...it just didn’t make sense.

I know many people receiving ‘disability’ payments..many not deserving, one in fact gets over $6,000.00 a month and brags about it and works under the table for cash as well....makes one ill...to see what is happening to this Nation..and there seems to be nothing the average person can do about it...

His research also shows a growing number of men, particularly older, former white-collar workers, instead of the typical blue-collar ones, are applying.

The big concern about the swelling ranks is that once people get on disability, they’re unlikely to give it up and go back to work.

This might end up as a win for me, as I have lost a lot of competitors in a crappy job market.

I understand. When the system is set up to maximize how many people are on it (Hell, they are running advertisements and offering rewards for referrals!), I wouldn’t be surprised to learn there is no one to talk to about fraud.

Same thing happened when they passed Welfare Reform in the 90’s. Nothing like the “Disability” explosion of today, but it was still there.

The work ethic is for suckers in the land of Obamaville.

Which reminds me of a great song, Dire Straits, Money for Nothing...

$6,000 a month? You did not say SSDI only. But it could be if the former wages were very high and there are several family members. The checks are not necessarily lifetime there are periodic reviews, I believe.

BTW have I read that 10,000,000 are getting SSDI and it costs 200 billion dollars annually. That's $20,000 average annually and $1.667 / month.

I think that the individual benefit is added to the family benefit and the sum is the monthly benefit.

The following is copied from an Internet site.

Example Calculations: Social Security Benefits 2011

Finally, we are going to provide several quick examples, all estimates assume that you pass the qualifying tests and have the full credits mentioned earlier:

Example 1 - if you are age 45 and earning around $50,000 annually, your disability insurance benefits would be $1,745 per month, with a maximum family benefit of $3,293 per month.
Example 2 - if you are age 45 and earning around $25,000 annually, your disability insurance benefits would be $1,123 per month, with a maximum family benefit of $2,081 per month.
Example 3 - if you are age 35 and earning around $50,000 annually, your disability insurance benefits would be $2,018 per month, with a maximum family benefit of $3,607 per month.
Example 4 - if you are age 35 and earning around $25,000 annually, your disability insurance benefits would be $1,304 per month, with a maximum family benefit of $2,505 per month.
Example 5 - if you are earning around $95,000 or more, then you probably qualify for the maximum disability benefits under the Social Security system. In that situation, the maximum individual benefits are $2,184 each month with a maximum family benefit of $4,023 monthly.

You can find a more detailed benefits calculator on the Social Security website.

Social workers need ‘clients’ lest their own job would become endangered.

probably helps her metrics - if you get on disability, then she has helped someone; if you don’t, she has no progress to report.
