Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania has a commanding lead among Republican presidential candidates in Texas, according to a new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll.

Santorum would get the votes of 45 percent of the respondents if the election were held today, according to the survey. The other three candidates in the GOP race — former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas — are clustered well behind. Gingrich got 18 percent, Romney received 16 percent and Paul garnered 14 percent.

Possible and it would be nice if Texas would be in play that late in the process. We’ll have a better picture after we get passed super Tuesday.

As a Texan, I can assure you that Perry is not “dearly beloved” here. In fact, he may have hurt Newt in Texas with that endorsement.

If Texas is so dense that it tosses its votes to this guy then we might as well hold the general election in July to save us the grief.

naaa. it just means that we Texans will have the privledge of putting Santorum over the top to secure the nomination :)

It's a LONG way until the end of May (29th) (the new projected date -- which depends on redistricting court challenges). You're counting those chickens a bit early.

Yes, Texas has an open primary. Kinda fun, actually. Depending on where the hot races are, Independents like me can choose where to vote.

That said, you have to remember that Texas Dems are often to the right of NE Pubs.

And then there’s Ron Paul. I don’t know how he stays in office unless it’s all the pork he sends home.

This is not likely voters. Is it even Republican voters? Is TX an open primary?

I am aware that Newt’s past is hurting him. Goodness knows enough FReepers can’t put the sitting on the couch thing with Nancy in perspective. What I don’t understand, especially with FReepers, is that we know how messed up the economy is and we know how we need to make significant changes or our country is done, but few are evaluating candidates based on policy positions and if they can beat Obama. Santorum, nice perfect person he is, doesn’t have a chance of beating Obama. Heck, at this point, if Newt doesn’t make it, I would go with Paul. Scary as his foreign policy positions are, at least we have a chance of economic recovery and can fix the foreign policy stuff later. People NEED jobs so they can feed their families. Newt and Paul are the only two with plans that have a chance of fixing our economy.

Sorry, but Santorum is the only one (so far) with the straight-forwardness to define the campaign. This makes you sick?

IMO, the more I see Santorum rise in the pols, the more I see a brokered convention, with Jeb Bush nominated. The Establishment candidate.

Oh no duckman; not Jeb Bush. A brokered convention is cool with me; the GOP hasn’t had once since 1940. But, not Jeb Bush. How about Jim DeMint or Paul Ryan prevailing in a brokered convention?

“Santorum does not do amnesty schemes...guess the word got out.”

Question: what would you do to remove the illegal immigrants from our country?

Santorum: I’ve said this from the very beginning. What — I’m the son of an Italian immigrant. I believe in immigration. I believe that immigration is an important part of the lifeblood of this country.

But what we have is a problem of an unsecure border. Unlike Governor Perry, I believe we need to build more fence. I need — I believe that we need to secure the border using technology and more personnel. And until we build that border, we should neither have storm troopers come in and throw people out of the country nor should we provide amnesty.

What we should do is enforce the laws in this country with respect to employers, and we should secure the border. And then after the border is secured, then we can deal with the problem that are in this country. But I — I think it’s very important that we understand and we explain to folks that immigration is an important lifeblood of this country, something that I strongly support and something that we have to do legally if we’re going to have — have respect for the law.

I don’t think the Italian demographic is that large outside of the Northeast. It’s not even large enough to give Santorum a victory in NY where there is a huge Italian population.

Santorum is the only one of the four who is not afraid of the MSM or of Obama.

Uh....wrong. Newt doesn't show any fear standing up to the MSM or Obama either. Standing up to the MSM is why he won South Carolina. Remember?

That being said...in the grand scheme of things...ALL of these candidates are RINO's as measured by FR standards....and I don't say that sarcastically. Romney is a RINO deluxe. Paul is a RINO (because he is more a libertarian). Newt is a RINO...because he sat on the couch next to Nancy and his other environmental tendencies (and other things)...and Rick is a RINO...because he voted for a bunch of lib bills.

Truth be told...NO ONE is snowy white in this race. I'm just voting against the other guy...and I hate that.

But you need to keep your facts straight....

I’m thinking Obozo stepping in it with the Catholic Church, and Rick be Catholic will have a much greater impact than his Italian heritage.

If the Simpson/Smith bill had passed as written, we wouldn’t come close to having 7 million illegal aliens holding U.S. jobs today. And millions of Americans who currently are unemployed would have jobs.

But Sen. Santorum did not side with Sen. Simpson. Santorum voted with Abraham and the cheap-labor lobbyists who did everything they could to protect the ability of outlaw businesses to hire illegal foreign labor.

In our NumbersUSA rating system for Presidential candidates, all would be forgiven if Sen. Santorum would make a public pledge to throw his all-out support for a mandatory E-Verify law. But in his answers to all the immigration questions this past year, we cannot find any record of Santorum showing support for E-Verify.

And while other candidates provide pages on their website that give positions on immigration, Sen. Santorum doesn’t address immigration on his website.
Santorum’s Senate record shows lack of support for E-Verify. And he has failed in all debate opportunities to show a changed position. - NumbersUSA

Wonder if Romney will now stop the “I am a Mormon” commercials here in Texas?

LOL. I am sick of hearing those too.

Yes Texas is an open primary in that you don’t register to vote by party affiliation. When you go to the polls to vote on primary day you select which party you wish to vote in and are bound by that selection for any runoff election.

I posted a link to the data up thread which gives you the break outs of party IDs as stated by the respondents.
