TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is dangling the prospect of gas as low as $2 a gallon if he's elected.
The former House speaker has spoken in the past of gas dropping to $2.50 a gallon under a Gingrich administration. Monday's prediction, coming as Gingrich campaigned in Oklahoma, contrasts sharply with rival Rick Santorum, who told an Ohio audience that big-city Americans should brace themselves for $5-a-gallon gas.
Both candidates are citing new sensitivity over rising pump prices to push for relaxed regulation on domestic oil production.
According to AAA's daily fuel gauge, the national average Monday for a gallon of regular gas was $3.56.
Gingrich and Santorum have been highlighting oil exploration in North Dakota and slamming the Obama administration for delaying a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline.
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich dangled the prospect of gas as low as $2 a gallon if he's elected, playing off voter angst about rising prices at the pump.
The former House speaker has spoken in the past of gas dropping to $2.50 a gallon under a Gingrich administration. Monday's prediction came as Gingrich campaigned in Oklahoma, where the oil and natural gas sector is vital to a bustling state economy.
"With Gingrich policies, what we know is we will dramatically expand our independence in the world market, dramatically expand our capacity to produce energy without regard to our foreign potential enemies and in the process prices will clearly be a lot lower," Gingrich said. "Now, I picked $2.50 as a stabilizing price for capital investment reasons. It could easily go down to $2."
According to AAA's daily fuel gauge, a gallon of regular gas was approaching $4 in some places and even topped it in California.

Newt should just go ahead and say $1.99 or $1.98
Why not while he’s at it?
That’s just stupid and desperate. Please. We all know that’s BS.
There is no reason other than Government why we are paying such high prices on energy.
At every turn over the past three years one rule of thumb can be applied. If it is good for America, this administration (and by extension the Democrat party) is against it. If it can hurt America, this administration is for it.
He said $2.50 on Hannity today. Now he’s down to $2.00??
Someone should ask him to make a good six pack of beer $3, and a fine steak $5 as long as he’s determining the price of free market goods.
And you back that up how newcomer?
Proving once again, Santorum has no confidence or of any domestic plan in turning the economy around. He tells us, get use to the price increases. Very un -inspiring. Between the candidates, Newt is right on target. Drill here, open up the fuel reserves in which God gave us.
Remove the local state and fed taxes on each gallon!
Conquer Saudi Arabia?
How do YOU back up that Newt could wave a magic wand and make gasoline $2 a gallon?
Watch out for the pest poop.
Remove Government excess and you could very well have that.
I’ve got no problem with a reasonable tax on a gallon of gas... as long as it goes DIRECTLY to road maintenance and repair (and nowhere else). You can reduce it... you can’t get rid of it. Roads don’t fix themselves.
It’s people like you that are scary. You really believe what you just said which is that we’ll never see $2 gas again.
People like you are the reason we’re in this mess. You probably voted for the hope and change guy last time because you believed what he said.
Bachmann claimed $1.80.
Do we hear $1.75?
Why not $1.50?
Or even $1.00?
[Pandering is pandering.]
He shouldn’t be making price predictions, as that lends the impression that he’d mess with the marketplace to achieve his goals.
Give us a promise to get out of the marketplace and tell us how’d you do that, but no price promises.
In other words: price setting is an empty political slogan. Newt can put in place good policies and give us a better energy outlook, but promising gas at price X is silly.
$3 six pack? $5 Ribeye?
I’m with you all the way!
[We all know thats BS.]
BS is thinking gas has to be $5 a gallon.
A barrel of oil on the open international market is over $100. There is no WAY you’re going to get $2 gas at that price. The removal of what “government excess” exactly is going to get the price of a barrel of oil down to $50?
It’s the most basic economic question.
Increase the supply. Supply meets and exceed demand that creates competition, and the consumers benefit from the competition by lower prices.
You can't back that up. Newt is still my preferred candidate, but that he's lowered himself to Michelle Bachmann at her lowest says a lot about his expectations.
In 1970 you could buy a great car brand new for $5000. We’ll never see that price again. Does pointing that out make me “scary”?
Didn’t Bachmann suggest something like this back in September? And if I remember, she was lampooned for it.
“Eminently desirable for average commuting suburban Americans. Of course, this offer is as much advertisment of whoredom as an increase of minimum wage increase to the SEIU thugs. Why not offer free cheese, Newt, you whore?”
Don’t think your word is acceptable. I suggest you lose that word when referring to Newt.
[Why not offer free cheese, Newt, you whore? ]
Santorum you gay castratti, don’t you realize gas was at $2.50 relatively recently? If you put curbs on the Fed (Gingrich’s idea, not Santorum’s) and opened the fields for drilling, this would most certainly happen.
I see it, Red. Probably here we go again. Hope not.
uhhh....nooo..... you know what it sounds like? “Hope and Change”. With nothing to back it up. Sound familiar?
I owned a ‘66 Chevy with the 396 rat motor. I think i got 8 miles to the gallon but it didn’t matter.
What was it, the sweater vests that gave it away?
Sort of the way Santorum panders for manufacturers.
First off by reducing Government, i.e. taxes on individuals and corporations. Secondly by tossing into the trash bin our current (STUPID) energy policy (”blends” of gasolines) and finally, getting rid of entire Federal Agencies (EPA for starters) and making these asinine lawsuits the greenies bring “loser pays” expenses by doing what Newt said, start arresting some judges that are legislating from the bench (siding with their ideology; my words).
Newton has acted in Newton’s interests ever since 1992 when he realized he could manipulate public opinion to his advantage. 1996 proved him wrong and his friends, the Tofflers, and the intervening years have confirmed the same.
I will not, and cannot, repent of my convictions.
I know you think you were being smart with your snark, but you were showing your ignorance instead. What Newt was saying is that the free market would and could get gas down to two bucks or thereabouts if government would get the hell out of the way. Maybe your sweater vest is so tight the blood flow to your brain is compressed.
Gasoline in the range of $2.50 per gallon would be possible much more quickly than you may think. During the Arab oil embargo of the Carter years the price per barrel was pretty high. Deregulation under Reagan started a domestic energy production boom. Arab countries started flooding the market with oil, the price of which dropped like a stone. Because of the lower price (and profits) domestic drilling slowed...but we had much cheaper energy costs, which helped fuel the great economic expansion that resulted. We start drilling...the same thing will happen again. The Arabs are nothing if not predictable.
Just electing a Republican Senate and a Republican President will probably in of itself cause a dramatic decrease in a gallon of gas perhaps as much as a dollar. I few oil drilling and pipe projects and a strengthening of the $USD could easily cause another dollar drop. $2.00 / gal is very reasonable.
Get a better answer.
[In 1970 you could buy a great car brand new for $5000. Well never see that price again. Does pointing that out make me scary?]
It certainly does because it means you are ignorant both of monetary policy and free market economics unfetterd by govenment over-regulation. Scary indeed.
When Washington can control the economy, please alert me. Until then, their rhetoric is little more than flatulence.
Vote Newt = $2 gas....Vote commie obama = $7 gas...
Life with the peasants is frustrating tonight, ain’t it? Perhaps the irony of Working Class Filth’s forum name is lost on him. Wouldn’t be the only irony lost IMO.
[What was it, the sweater vests that gave it away?]
I just think I got a freebie. When someone called Gingrich a whore I went all in for Santorum as a gay castrati. Though that sweater vest does give pause.
