I don’t know whether anyone should be offended by the term or not. But I do know it was a manifestly stupid thing for these journalists to do. Using the word “chink” in a headline about a Chinese person is an instant ticket to the unemployment line. There might be many, many people out there with niggardly attitudes, but if I were a journalist I would think it suicide to put that word in a headline about a black person.

Rep. Chu, if we want your opinion, we'll give it to you.

He was born in California.

That should necessitate a Green Card.

From what I understand from the article, the word wasn’t being applied in a negative way.

If the team, Jeremy Lin was playing, had a strong defense, but Jeremy was able to bypass that to score some baskets, he found a chink in their armor.

I don’t think that’s an offensive way to put that. The fact that he’s Asian is irrelevant.

The left wants to control the language so they can control you.

And you are letting them control you, so congratulations on being a lefty toady.

No, he doesn’t. Why would he need one having been born in los Angeles and raised in Palo Alto?

Well, you practically need a Green Card to go to those places.

The term ‘chink’ has been a derogatory term for a long long time. Its essentially fallen out of use as anything but a derogatory term. The only reason they used the term is because it referenced an Asian.

Nobody is controlling me. I dislike racism regardless of who it originates from. That you make excuses and attempt to twist out of your obvious racism just speaks to your lack of integrity.

Ha! Excellent point!

Lin seems to be a nice guy. He is the C-word version of the media obsession with the football guy ... you know who I mean.

He’s not offended. I’m not offended. People are too easily offended.

Forget it.

I do resent the implication in the story that there was an overwhelming defeat of the Mavericks. they led much of the way; had a breakdown in the third quarter that allowed the Knicks to get back in and win by 6 or 7 points. Duh.

I knew that; plus his family is Christian, not Buddhist. I was just being facetious.

I doubt if it was intentional, but a good editor would not have let it pass.

Then let’s keep cutting the richness of the English language until there is nothing left of it.

That should please everybody.

FO on the racism charge. I don’t care.

Toady.

Maybe it was wrong but we’ve always used slang terms to refer to various ethic groups. We definitely used the term “Jap” during WWII. I’ve used quite a few terms myself not with hate but just because I can and want to, but usually not in public.

The journalist was trying to make a cute pun. Lighten up.

It’s only an offensive term to those who don’t have an expansive vocabulary.

I suppose chink will now join niggardly as verboten words in the age of PC and ignorance.

I’ve used chink fairly often in my life, but never about Chinese. If someone hadn’t pointed out the ‘offensiveness’ of the headline before I saw it, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.

I normally think about chink as a gap in the armor, or like this:

I don’t want to think about what some folks would say ‘chinking a log’ means...

We’ll be reduced to using about 20 three lettered words to try and express everything, because somebody will find a racial context for every other word.

Our alphabet will be reduced accordingly as the letters of those offensive words will be found unnecessary.

The new alphabet will be BDFJMOPRSTVWXYZ

I’m sure we can reduce the alphabet further to reduce the chance of being offensive.

[People are too easily offended.]

Now they’re not, they lie in wait for these slurs and then use them as a blunt force instrument for their own wicked agenda.
