Botched defection leads to diplomatic crisis, puts whistleblower at risk.
The failed defection of a high-ranking Chinese police official is shining a light on a power struggle at the highest levels of Chinas communist systemand bringing to the fore a debate among U.S. intelligence officials as to what is really happening in the Peoples Republic of China.
The dramatic events of Feb. 6 at the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, in southern China, involved a rejected asylum appeal by Wang Lijun, a former director of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau.
A U.S. official said Wangwho drove 200 miles from Chongqing to Chengdu, entered the embassy in a disguise, and spent the night at the American consulateturned over a stack of documents during his 10-hour stay.
China is now demanding that the documents be returned, which could prove disastrous for Wang.
In China last week, Beijing authorities went to great lengths to play down the Feb. 6 incident. Minimizing the effect has been difficult, however, as regional communists under Bo Xilai dispatched armored personnel carriers and tanks to a neighboring province to threaten the U.S. consulate and force the return of Wang.
The consulate standoff ended after a senior official of the Ministry of State Security, Chinas civilian intelligence and political police service, was sent to Chengdu. He then escorted Wang out of the consulate and on to an aircraft for a flight to Beijing.
Chinese websites have been filled with reports on the Wang case, with some claiming he defected to avoid being purged but most commenting that it will likely lead to the downfall of Bo Xilai. Photos of the armored personnel carriers and tanks sent to intimidate the U.S. embassy into releasing Wang were quickly passed around Chinese Internet sites.

Wang Lijun will find the way of Jimma Hoffa.
He’ll never been seen again.
Some secretary at the American office called to check references. (guessing)
“China is now demanding that the documents be returned...”
I’m sure the documents will be returned—right after about 100 copies are made of them.
“Committee Chairman Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R., Fla.) has said it appears the department mishandled an attempted defection. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Friday the department is working on responding to the committees document request.”
They’ll comply as soon as they get their orders from Soros and Media Matters on how far up the Chinese rear end they should keep their tongues.
They’d reply sooner, but Hillary is busy right now enabling the muslim brotherhood and islamic jihad to take over the rest of the middle east.
/State department staff should be dragged by their hair onto flights to gitmo no later than 1.5 minutes after the Republican President is sworn in.
A list of treasonous “Americans”
have evidently earned trial and execution for their handling of the case.
. . . as high as it goes . . .
Tell the Chinese we’d like to give them back the papers, but there are so many, we’d have to use an airplane and we remember how those Chinese like forcing down our airplanes. Then, tell them to stick an eggroll up their ass.
Keep the documents.
Could this be like the famous Soviet defector who told MI-6 in 1979 that the Soviet Politburo was having knock-down drag out internal fights over production quotas for toothpaste and ladies’ panty hose?
This could actually be a good thing.
The “smart” limo-socialist multi-nationalists would take it in the shorts if communist China moved towards it true colors and stopped coddling the “perfumed princes” of globalism. China is currently their ideal central planning governing structure. They have an endless supply of slave labor, forced population control and massive profits. Best of all worlds for a global fascist wannabe like George Soros and Bill Gates.
Left wing progress would take on a whole new meaning for the fascist idiots if they were oppressed by the centralized government like the people of China (their slaves) are abused and oppressed by the government and their employers.
Spread around a taste of utopia for the whole mess of them because limo-liberal coporate “we want to rule the globe” delusions are running rampant in this crowd. Maybe if the chi-coms take some of them out, the blood lust of our Leftists will be passified and their corporate money and press will dry up.
American-American constitutional freedom and independence won’t look so extremist and “old-fashioned” once they get a load of utopia’s progress. A centralized machine full of “smart” people is a dangerous and deadly machine and it’s time for the globalists to get a taste of what they are pushing on the United States and Europe.
