New York City's mayor faced off with the president of Yale University on Monday over efforts by the city's police department to monitor Muslim student groups.
The Associated Press revealed over the weekend that in recent years, the NYPD has kept close watch on Muslim student associations across the Northeast. The effort that included daily tracking of student websites and blogs, monitoring who was speaking to the groups, and in one case sending an undercover officer on a whitewater rafting trip with students from the City College of New York.
Yale President Richard Levin was among a number of academics who condemned the effort in a statement Monday, while Rutgers University and leaders of student Muslim groups elsewhere called for investigations into the monitoring.
"I am writing to state, in the strongest possible terms, that police surveillance based on religion, nationality, or peacefully expressed political opinions is antithetical to the values of Yale, the academic community, and the United States," Levin wrote.
Speaking to reporters later Monday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg dismissed those criticisms as baseless.
"I don't know why keeping the country safe is antithetical to the values of Yale," he said.
He said it was "ridiculous" to argue that there was anything wrong with officers keeping an eye on websites that are available to the general public.
"Of course we're going to look at anything that's publicly available in the public domain. We have an obligation to do so, and it is to protect the very things that let Yale survive," Bloomberg said.
Asked by a reporter if he thought it was a "step too far" to send undercover investigators to accompany students on rafting vacations, Bloomberg said: "No. We have to keep this country safe."
"It's very cute to go and blame everybody and say we...

I don’t see the problem...we need to keep tabs on all adversaries.
I can understand why the murdering rapists wouldn’t want us keeping an eye on them.
The only problem I have with this is that our national security seems to be up to the NYPD.
In the meanwhile the number one objector is in the White House openly conducting muslim business.....
I am outraged that they are even in this country. They can get the f*ck out of this country if they don’t like it. I am so sick of these ‘people’.
We have not had female Vietnamese suicide bombers attacking all over the world.
You monitor the attackers.
Who attacks?
Muslims.
Outrage by islamic thugs, leftists and paulbots. Yea, I don’t care.
Exactly what the police ought be doing with all Muslim students —and all first ,second, perhaps even third generation Muslim—those most likely to become radicalized.Prison gangs and any who convert to Islam in prison ought be monitored for at least 7 years after any release. It wasn’t the United States that began this war. The world Trade Center was attacked twice.9-11-01 was the most damaging act of war since Pearl
Harbor. Ft.Hood saw Major Nidal Hasan murder fourteen and wound more than thirty -who have not received a Purple Heart—Note to the US Army IMO they were wounded by an act that under any American Administration would have been understood as an act of War-Nidal Hasan most clearly intended it as such.Yet this Administration is the most Anti American EVIL TYRANNY since King George. And the Muslim Brotherhood and the House of Islam are Obama’s own and he will not defend America-nor Americans And puts Israel at risk all so he can allow his bloody bunkbuddies all the opportunity to strike first with atomic weapons.
Okay Ivy Leaguers, here’s your choice. We either monitor your precious Muslim students, or deport them en masse. Pick one.
If they keep up this crap, there are solutions.
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.
..................
I think it’s great!
Not from me.
My outrage arises from the fact that no one even seems to think that deporting these swine might be a good idea.

No problem at all is right and if they don’t like it they can throw on their travelin’ diapers, jump on their flyin’ carpets and get the hell outta here.....right back to whatever sand box crap hole country that spawned ‘em.
Someone needs to post the ‘odd’ correlation between known terrorists and members of Muslim Student Associations. It’s quite high.

Terrorism expert Patrick Poole, however, told CBN News his investigation of the organization shows it’s being used for another purpose.
“The Muslim Students Association has been a virtual terror factory,” said Poole. “Time after time after time again, we see these terrorists — and not just fringe members: these are MSA leaders, MSA presidents, MSA national presidents — who’ve been implicated, charged and convicted in terrorist plots.”
The roll call includes Anwar al-Awlaki, the al Qaeda cleric linked to terror plots from Fort Hood to Times Square and beyond.
Awlaki, now a target for assasination by the U.S. government, was president of the MSA at Colorado State University in the mid-1990s.
Then there is Ramy Zamzam. Before his conviction in Pakistan last year for attempting to join the Taliban and kill American troops, Zamzam was president of the MSA’s Washington, D.C., council.
Omar Hammami, a leader of the al-Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia, is another MSA alum. He was once president of the group’s chapter at the University of South Alabama.
And the list goes on.
Abdurahman Alamoudi, who was national president of the MSA during the 1980s, was al Qaeda’s top fundraiser in America and is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence.

Since its inception, the MSA has chronically been a vehicle of extremism, hatred, and incitement to violence. Its chapters host a wide variety of extremist speakers and have repeatedly raised funds for Islamic groups that have later been closed by the U.S. government for funding terrorism. For this reason, the MSA was identified in 2004 as one of 27 Islamic charities and groups in the U.S. under investigation by the Senate Finance Committee for terrorist support.
As a result of the long-time institutional extremism, the MSAs have also proved to be a fertile recruiting ground for terrorist organizations, such that a 2007 report on Islamic radicalization published by the New York City Police Department identified the MSA as one of the key radicalization incubators for homegrown terrorists (p. 68). This dubious distinction is not without cause.
One of the darkest secrets of the MSA, certainly never advertised by the organization or mentioned in their publications, is a rather lengthy list of top MSA leaders who have been arrested and convicted on a wide array of terrorism charges, ranging from material support of terrorist groups to being actively involved in terrorist plots.
