Devil in the details: Santorum hardly alone in belief in Satan (7 of 10 Americans believe in Satan)

Rick Santorum is far from alone in professing a belief in Satan. In fact, most Americans believe in the devil too. Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator and 2012 Republican presidential contender, is making headlines this week for comments he made at a Catholic university in 2008 about Satan having his “sights on” America.

In the speech, which resurfaced recently, Santorum told an audience at Ave Maria University in southwest Florida: “Satan [has been] attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that [have] so deeply rooted in the American tradition.”

He said Satan has been “most successful” in attacking academia, but that Satan also has gone after the church and popular culture. Santorum said politics and government would be the next to fall to Satan’s attack. “The body politic held up fairly well up until the last couple of decades but it is falling too.”

While such frank talk about spiritual warfare is uncommon among presidential candidates, surveys over the past few decades have shown that the majority of Americans do believe in Satan.

According to a 2007 Gallup poll, seven in 10 Americans said they believe in “the Devil,” while 8 percent were not sure. Twenty-one percent said they don’t believe in the devil.

Eighty-six percent said they believe in God, while 8 percent were not sure and 6 percent said they don’t believe in God.

In relation to the political questions of the day, shouldn’t they have asked the question: Do you believe Satan is attacking American Institutions? Would you vote for a POTUS candidate who believes this?

RE: Do you believe Satan is attacking American Institutions? Would you vote for a POTUS candidate who believes this?

I’d personally answer YES to both questions, but it won’t bother me if a competent and qualified conservative candidate answered yes or no to either.

The Left despises Christianity but their TV shows and movies are full of hellish themes.

They have no problem separating themselves from the Father above but they will never give up their fascination with hell.

I don’t know how anyone could not believe in Satan. A father hatchets his two adorable sons, then burns them up in a house. How about the man who threw hs daughter strapped in a car seat, over a bridge into the water. But I still do not want a career politician making his religious beliefs the central theme of a presidential campaign. So what is his plan to get rid of Satan? Better yet, what is his plan on keeping gasoline under 7.00 a gallon? This is ridiculous.

He's real Jim.

Satan isn't someone going around annoying people.....he has a deadly game.....as in deadly for your soul.

People can point at an enemy that they can see, feel, hear, smell and touch.

Satan doesn't offer any of these rational tools to be discerned by.

Well, maybe there is a touch of sulfur to be smelled.

“I don’t know how anyone could not believe in Satan. A father hatchets his two adorable sons, then burns them up in a house. How about the man who threw hs daughter strapped in a car seat, over a bridge into the water.”

Why is Satan needed to explain the evil that men do? Why can’t a father that kills his children be personally responsible for his own evil, rather than attributing that evil to some third party?

I find much of the recent discussions about Santorum’s comments about Satan really dopey. For someone like me, who has been a conservative all my life, it’s discouraging because it makes the conservative base look really, really, loony.
