Romney and Paul successfully call Santorum’s conservatism into question
Washington Post ^ | February 22, 2011 | Aaron Blake

Rick Santorum’s front-runner status in the GOP presidential race is predicated on the idea that he is the consistent conservative alternative in the field.

And that image had some serious holes poked in it at Wednesday’s debate in Arizona.

Mitt Romney and Ron Paul tag-teamed the former Pennsylvania senator much of the night, calling into question his conservatism on issues ranging from earmarks and fiscal policy to his endorsements and even what is often considered Santorum’s most solidly conservative credential — social issues.

>> Santorum is BY FAR the best candidate still in the race. And light years ahead of the others in terms of conservative beliefs.

Amusing, BY FAR.

It was a great evening, I loved it.

Look for Saint Ricky’s polls to start to tank.

The Romney-Paul campaign could not be more obvious could it? and do you think the WashPost might be a little biased against the more conservative candidates?

Just a smidge?

I have no doubt that even before the debate started tonight, the media narrative had already been written to declare Santorum the loser and Romney the winner.

>> Did Arlen help get the Right guys on SCOTUS or not?

He supported the wise Latina and the mall cop. So what’s your point?

Did Arlen help get us Obamacare? Hell, yes he did.

In the debate Paul was Romney’s hand puppet. Paul was Romney’s attack dog.

Maybe; but, I doubt it. Let’s face it. Rick imploded last night. Just like Newt did after he became the front runner coming out of SC. Rick just wasn’t ready for Prime Time as the front runner. As much as I hate to admit it; RINO-Rom was just smarter than him and mopped the floor with him over his voting record. He had Rick explaining why he voted for what he really didn’t like or believe in: Earmarks, Arlen Specter, No Child Left Behind, etc. RINO-Rom just outsmarted the boy. Now, the only hope we have is that Newt will rise again. If not......... Hell, I’ll consider a Third Party. If the GOP could not give us a better slate of candidates than we’ve had this year; then to hell with the Republican Party. Let Obozo have four more years to finish destroying this nation, and, if we’re still around in four years, maybe the GOP will be older and wiser. Nah... I doubt it. Obozo should have been easy-pickings for defeat and once again, the GOP has pulled defeat from the jaws of victory.

Santorum is very mainstream in his political views.

While he might not have won it technically, he did enough to keep the momentum from shifting.

You can wake up now; you’re dreaming. RINO-Rom won Michigan last night. Rick imploded. He was the worst on stage.

Mitt accused Newt of the same and he turned around and covered for both Rick and himself in saying Mitt did the same yet accusing others of what he did himself. Like Mitt was implying it’s wrong for others but not for himself. Newt had the info about mitt demanding the catholic hospitals to follow the birth control laws that were in place and I was waiting for Rick to jump in and agree with Newt. Mitt was wrong and it would have taken mitt down a great deal. There was a thread about the catholic hospitals and mitt’s birth control insistance awhile back. I just wondered does Rick know about it? I can’t imagine that he doesn’t so I couldn’t understand why he remained quiet. Mitt got a huge pass on that one. If Rick followed Newt - Mitt would have gotten the treatment that Ron and Mitt were giving Rick. Squeeze him from both ends and that was a perfect opportunity to see Mitt loose it and stutter his way out of it.

“We look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it.” – Rick Santorum

So Santorum thinks mainline Protestants are so sinful they are no longer Christian?

This will rightfully alienate a vast number of Christians voters.

78.4% of adult Americans are Christian.
51.3% of adult Americans are Protestant.

Even people who are not Protestants would find this condescending and extreme.

The Democrats will make commercials featuring this Protestant-hostile statement. Santorum wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance of winning the election after this exposure of his personal beliefs. No wonder they call him Senator Sanctimonium.

I personally do not support Santorum because he is an authoritarian masquerading as a conservative. He has voiced his opposition to the Tea Party, and he wants to regulate the internet.

Having big government enforcing a right wing agenda is not much better than big government forcing a left wing agenda. His condescending views toward Protestantism are the last straw for the viability his candidacy. As you may have noticed, not all Christians are for freedom of speech or the honest capitalism of free markets. He, like some religious “conservatives” sell out our freedom for the advancement of his personal religious views.

Here is another relevant quote:

They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues.

That is not how traditional conservatives view the world. There is no such society that I’m aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture.”

Apparently Rick Santorum thinks that the government should get “involved in the bedroom”. Apparently having what goes on in your bedroom be your own business is “radical individualism”. Whether you agree with him or not, that kind of intrusion will not fly with the electorate. He cannot win.

I think we have to take into consideration, when reading responses to pro-Santorum posts, that many people, even here on FreeRepublic, are publicly school-indoctrinated atheistic secularists and that their only claim to conservatism lies in their greed and envy...they're "fiscal" conservatives only. They are corrupt/liberal, socially and religiously and culturally.

They could really not care any less, nor understand any less, the truth that for capitalism to succeed for any extended length of time religious principles of morality must reign and be protected.

It is much like the Tea Party failure...which could have been a long-lasting success story. One cannot claim to be “principled” (i.e. moral) while denying the importance of and the existence of the one and only foundation for true morality (Judeo-Christian principles).

Secularism, regardless of whether it is on the right or left, fails to protect and fails to prosper, for any real length of time.
