Head-butts and flying fists break out at Britainís House of Commons
The Globe and Mail ^ | February 23, 2012 | Doug Saunders

On Wednesday morning, Canada’s Speaker of the House Andrew Scheer was in the midst of a very Canadian debate over whether to allow babies in the House of Commons.

That evening he got a taste of the far more grownup world of Britain’s parliament, as he reportedly found himself in the midst of an MP fistfight.

According to British newspapers, Mr. Scheer was part of a Canadian delegation invited to visit Strangers, one of several drinking establishments inside the House of Commons...

There, according to reports, he was one of dozens of visitors who witnessed a startling scene as Eric Joyce, a Labour MP, went on a violent rampage against Tory MPs and was arrested.

Mr. Joyce, the member for Falkirk, reportedly began dancing erratically before shouting a disparaging remark about the Tories, dumping drinks on some fellow members, swinging his fists at several MPs who tried to calm him down, including Labour whip Phil Wilson.

He then head-butted Stuart Andrew, the Tory MP for Pudsey, punched a few more people, and head-butted the MP again.

“There was blood spilled – it was like the Wild West in there,” one MP told the Evening Standard.

It took five security officers to calm the over-excited MP, according to the Evening Standard. He was arrested on suspicion of assault and on Thursday morning was suspended from the Labour caucus. The British Speaker of the House, John Bercow, told reporters he would take the incident “very seriously.”

Heavy drinking is considered a serious problem in Britain’s Parliament. There are bars adjoining the Commons and Lords chambers which are packed before and after sittings; it is widely reported that some MPs have numerous drinks before attending sittings – even in the morning. Stories about drunken brawls and misbehaviour among parliamentarians abound...

This could never happen in America. Members of Congress are immune from arrest while Congress is in session.

Will the guy face real justice for assault? Or do leftwing MP’s get off easy like they do in the US?

Recall the old saying, “ Drunker than a Lord”. Old sailors know about these things.

Personally, I wish the occasional donnybrook would break out in Congress. It would give me more respect for them.

invited to visit Strangers, one of several drinking establishments - sounds like an establishment that would cater to fancy lads...

It was like the Wild-West m - don't drag us into this, it sounds like typical English soccer hooliganism to me

‘’the Wild West’’? You mean there were Colt revolvers drawn? I thought the Brits dis-armed themselves.

That would explain how Great Britain was sold out to socialism by its Governing class.

Too stupid drunk to know what they were doing and too selfish to care.

Churchill would be appalled at their loutishness. He used water for painting and liquor for libation.

Or if it were Scotland, a Rangers - Celtic match (although usually there’s more violence in Northern Ireland during those matches than actually in Glasgow.)

I am tired of holier-than-thou nags attempting to remove alcohol from every public place. Many members of this forum suffer from this form on nagging progressivism. I would like to point out that Prohibition was a progressive experiment that ended in disaster. It made criminals out of ordinary people and helped entrench organized crime. During the American Revolution everybody drank like a fish. They probably were drinking when they wrote the Declaration of Independence, the constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

I suspect that alcohol is the secret sauce that rational, reserved, freedom-loving, mind-my-own-busines need in order argue and fight for liberty. Liberals don't need alcohal because they are already emotional with poor impulse control 24-7-365.

My advice, go to a pub, have a couple of beers, and then argue with a liberal!
