Pelosi: Catholic Church 'Has Not Enforced' Its Teaching on Contraception
CNS News ^ | 2/22/2012 | Eric Scheiner

CNSNews.com) - During an event at Texas A&M University on Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed the Catholic Church has not enforced its teaching on contraception and that the church now wants the federal government to enforce that teaching for it.

“Ninety-eight percent of women in childbearing age that are Catholic use contraception. So, in practice the church has not enforced this and now they want the federal government and private insurance to enforce it. It just isn’t consistent to me,” Pelosi said.

The statement came after Pelosi was questioned about the conflict between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration over a regulation, set to take effect on Aug. 1, that will require all health-care plans in the United States to cover sterilizations, artificial contraceptives and abortifacients, and thus would force Catholic institutions and individuals, in complying with the Obmacare mandate to buy health insurance, to act against their consciences and the teachings of their faith.

“Whatever my personal beliefs or my personal upbringing are on this subject everyone has their own responsibility in terms of the size and the rest of their family. So, I think this should be removed from the debate, it’s inflammatory--misrepresentations are made,” Pelosi added.

All 181 Catholic bishops in the United States oppose and have publicly denounced the regulation issued by the Obama administration, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have called it "an unprecedented attack on religious freedom."

Sadly a majority of people in Pelosi's district think exactly like she does. Hence, that is why she has been there these many years and why California is going the way of Greece. I WILL NOT BAIL THEM OUT. CA deserves it's fate.

The Catholic Church doesn't "enforce" anything.

Participation is strictly voluntary, unlike participation in federal government enslavement schemes.

Just a few centuries ago, Pelosi would have been burned at the stake as a witch.

I guess they don’t burn them anymore.

That’s interesting.

Would Pelosi like the Catholics to bring back the Iron Maiden?

I didn’t know Churches were supposed to ‘enforce’ anything.

I know, we can lop the heads off of any woman taking birth control pills.

Wait, Islam’s already copyrighted that bit.

Queen Nancy will meet the same fate as Queen Jezebel, all we’re waiting for is a latter day Jehu.

I'm afraid I must disagree that "people in Pelosi's district think like she does." No one "thinks" like that; it is not thinking at all.

Let's examine her premises: (1) The Church teaches that contraception is wrong; (2) Most Catholic women practice contraception; (3) The Church does not want to pay for contraception.

Her conclusion? The Church wants the Federal Government to enforce the Church's teaching that contraception is wrong.

Can anyone explain to me the reasoning here? How can her premises led to her conclusion? Is she really so lacking in intellectual capabilities?

It is frightening that such a hysterical ninny was legally second in line to become president.

Anyone who has attained the position of Speaker of the House, and then tells the American people in all seriousness that ‘we must pass the bill so we can find out what’s in it,’ is not someone that American voters should ever take seriously about anything.

Photobucket Rev. Mother Superior would beg to differ we do teach contraception. Why just the other day Rev. Mother was teaching young single women how NOT to get pregnant while on a date. It is simple, while sitting hold a miraculous metal between your knees and don't let it fall out. It prevents pregnancy every time!

But the government will enforce its teaching on contraception. Before long it will also enforce its teaching on sodomy and abortion. You WILL do what we say. Princess Loonatune has totally lost her way.

If given a chance, I’d burn her tomorrow. The dried up prune would go up ..whooosh....!

I thought their polling showed this was all good. Seems like they're still trying to spin their way out of it. Doesn't have anything to do with Gingrich reminding people about Obama’s pro-infanticide past does it? They might be taking a slow quiet walk away from the contraceptive topic now. Like, uh,...never mind.

In the 21st Century, resuming enforcement of its teaching with pols like Pelosi would be an excellent place to start.

Even if the church itself was not self “enforcing” their belief, that is not grounds to be forcibly mandated to not support dogma.

Here’s an analogy that’s not too far-fetched. Suppose that one of Obama’s czars decides exactly what foods must be served at all institutions where children have lunch. Suppose further that they decide that pork has better nutritional value than beef, and must be served at least once a week. Do synagogues and mosques have to comply? Maybe just synagogues, since many professed Jews do not follow all of the dietary laws. Where does this end? (Hint—see Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro, et al.)

By calling it a “contraceptive” issue they re-frame the debate. Contraception is a personal choice. The real issue is aborting fetuses and the government dictating that some pharmacy must dispense the chemicals to abort human fetuses.

The catholic church could start by excommunicating people like Pelosi, until they do she is partially correct.

"The real issue is aborting fetuses and the government dictating that some pharmacy must dispense the chemicals to abort human fetuses."

Unfortunately most people are content with killing the unborn for convenience, hence why has abortion laws lingered for so long (Roe v. Wade is not amended to the Constitution).

No this round is about religious freedom and freedom of association. If we lose this battle, the whole war is lost.
