Pelosi: Catholic Church 'Has Not Enforced' Its Teaching on Contraception
CNS News ^ | 2/22/2012 | Eric Scheiner

CNSNews.com) - During an event at Texas A&M University on Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed the Catholic Church has not enforced its teaching on contraception and that the church now wants the federal government to enforce that teaching for it.

“Ninety-eight percent of women in childbearing age that are Catholic use contraception. So, in practice the church has not enforced this and now they want the federal government and private insurance to enforce it. It just isn’t consistent to me,” Pelosi said.

The statement came after Pelosi was questioned about the conflict between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration over a regulation, set to take effect on Aug. 1, that will require all health-care plans in the United States to cover sterilizations, artificial contraceptives and abortifacients, and thus would force Catholic institutions and individuals, in complying with the Obmacare mandate to buy health insurance, to act against their consciences and the teachings of their faith.

“Whatever my personal beliefs or my personal upbringing are on this subject everyone has their own responsibility in terms of the size and the rest of their family. So, I think this should be removed from the debate, it’s inflammatory--misrepresentations are made,” Pelosi added.

All 181 Catholic bishops in the United States oppose and have publicly denounced the regulation issued by the Obama administration, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have called it "an unprecedented attack on religious freedom."

Why not enforce her out the door of the church.

It is like she is tempting the church to do just that.

What a fake phony fraud this women stands as a member of the Church.

I'm curious as to how Pelosi and other Dem pols can claim they are "Catholic" with a straight face.

I am not Catholic and my belief system lies much closer to Catholic theology than this bunch.

One of the bishops who testified in the Congressional hearing last week gave a wonderful talk along the very lines you suggest, "The Parable of the Kosher Deli." http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/upload/lori-testimony-for-oversight-on-religious-freedom-2012-02-16.pdf

A bit more bluntly, Instapundit put it something like this, "What if the government mandated that all mosques serve bacon. When Muslims objected, the media reacted by proclaiming that Muslims want to outlaw bacon."

The Church doesn’t enforce its teaching on not worshipping false gods, bearing false witness, stealing, coveting, etc., either, and it’s a good thing for Democrats that it doesn’t. Go soak your head, Nazi.

But seriously, folks, the real problem is that the Church, at least in the Western world, doesn’t TEACH its teaching on sexual morality in a comprehensive way. Yes, all the information is “out there”: “Humanae Vitae,” “Evangelium Vitae,” the Theology of the Body, and so on. But it seems this information doesn’t reach the majority of even those Catholics who are in church every week, let alone those “in name only.”

Ummh, Nancy - the Church teaches.

Actual enforcement is left to a later time and a Higher Power.

By calling it a “contraceptive” issue they re-frame the debate. Contraception is a personal choice. The real issue is aborting fetuses and the government dictating that some pharmacy must dispense the chemicals to abort human fetuses.

I was about to post a similar comment.
The real argument is with abortions and forcing churches (and other taxpayers) to support such abominations.
There is a valid issue that the First Amendment protects Religious institutions from being forced by the Government to take actions which are against their beliefs. In that respect the Roman Catholic church is correct to oppose the Obama's Administration actions regarding their being forced to fund of contraception.
But the argument should be focused on abortion.
The Obama administration and their allies are trying to force Christian institutions to support the worship of Molech (baby sacrifice)...

Can anyone explain to me the reasoning here? How can her premises led to her conclusion? Is she really so lacking in intellectual capabilities?

Easy, she’s a f@#$%^& nut...

No doubt, 98% of Christian men have lusted after women other than their wives in their hearts (and the other 2% are gay, like Christ Matthews). That doesn't mean adultery is okay, just that we are imperfect. Similarly, the fact that many Catholics use birth control does not mean it is okay for the government to compel Catholics or members of any other faith who consider abortion (the killing of an innocent unborn child) to be murder to nonetheless pay for abortions.

The First Amendment takes legal precedence over any ruling from the Obama Administration's thugs, to just as great an extent as God's will takes precedence over the will of any person on earth. I no longer have any employees, thanks to big government, but if I did, I'd be cancelling their medical insurance at this point - feeling terrible about it, but not as bad as if I agreed to pay for the murder of an unborn child.
