NASHVILLE – Newt Gingrich went on the offensive against Rick Santorum during a campaign swing through Tennessee Monday, calling him a “big Labor Republican” and predicting his surging opponent’s fortunes will quickly change amid a chaotic race that could remain competitive all the way to the Republican National Convention in August.
Gingrich, who has said he must do well in the Southern states to win the GOP nomination, also predicted he would win the Alabama and Mississippi primaries next month.
Turning to the escalating violence in Afghanistan, the former Georgia congressman said the United States is facing an impossible task there.
“We are not going to fix Afghanistan. It is not possible,” he told a large group of Republicans at an afternoon luncheon here. “These are people who have spent several thousand years hating foreigners. And what we have done by staying is become the new foreigners.
“This is a real problem. And there are some problems where you have to say, ‘You know, you are going to have to figure out how to live your own miserable life… because you clearly don’t want to learn from me how to be unmiserable. And that is what you are going to see happen.”

I don’t quite get the connection myself, actually, about the timing either. I do believe there has to be a reason for the timing.
I think it is a practical thing. It certainly won’t hurt Santorum by tomorrow - there is always a lag of a couple of days before these things get into the public conciousness (not for us political junkies, but the man in the street sort of thing).
If Newt released the ad tommorow or Wednesday, it would be seen as sour grapes from a loser. By doing it the day before the primaries, he is on record without that perception.

I may not be well informed, but it sounds like Newt’s comments highlighting Rick’s record as a big Labor Republican were made in Tennessee, and not in Michigan.
Newt has launched his ballgame on the South and Georgia.
Newt should wait to draw a contrast in the South between himself and Rick Santorum, based on Rick’s campaign schedule?? I don’t think so.
Newt is this week ALL IN for the South and has begun his major push. Newt can not give Rick any more romping room. Those days are now over, and it’s over due.
In an effort to win the South, Newt will be probably be saying a lot Rick won’t like very much, because Newt’s game is on.
Too bad if didn’t fly in Michigan, under the circumstances.

Newt Gingrich is head and shoulders above Romney and Santorum who have faced him in debates. Not because he is just a good debater. The reason he is such a good debater is that he speaks from his own experience and knowledge and not, as the others, from a list of talking points and debate prep instructions from handlers.
In order to win the Republicans need a man of experience, fully prepared to take the lead from the day one, in order to put America back on track and end the 50-year slide to the abyss of liberalism and federal government dictatorship. Please, PLEASE make the people see and understand that. The clarity of thought and knowledge that Newt has, America needs him as captain who can redress Obama’s Titanic. The ship that is heavily loaded with debt and incompetence and is in danger to capsize. Make the people to understand that, or they are preparing a somber future for their children.
