Short on money and staff, Rick Santorum needs help to remain a viable threat to front-runner Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. One strategist hopes it will come from another rival, Newt Gingrich. Top adviser John Brabender says Santorum's future may depend upon Gingrich leaving the race. The former House speaker is showing no signs of bowing out, certainly not before next week's Super Tuesday voting.

"If we could ever make this where we have all the conservatives and tea party supporters behind us as one candidate against Mitt Romney, we'll win the nomination," Brabender said Wednesday as the Santorum campaign recalibrated after finishing a disappointing second in Michigan's primary...

A Gingrich spokesman confirmed Wednesday that there's been no pressure from Santorum's camp to leave the race.

Santorum went out of his way to compliment the former House speaker Wednesday at a rally in Knoxville, Tenn., as he recalled the impact of President Ronald Reagan and others early in his political career.

"I even give credit to Speaker Gingrich when I was thinking of running for the House of Representatives, as a great educator as he is," Santorum said. "It was important for me to understand who we are. Reagan did a lot of that education, and give Newt credit for doing a lot more."

Asked if Santorum needs Gingrich to drop out, Brabender replied, "We either need that or we need Gingrich's supporters" to shift in Santorum's direction.

Even if they did, the Santorum campaign remains underfunded and understaffed. Volunteers play key roles for the campaign in states where Romney has had professional operations for weeks.

Santorum is running a "MacGyver campaign...

Yeh, Rick, we know of your admiration for Speaker Gingrich, we heard you say as much in the early debates.

But after Fla, following low finishes in prior states, instead of supporting him- you decided that you could topple the Speaker by running negative ads against him in the midwest.

How's that worked out, other than to advance the Gop-e? Now, you want Newt to leave?

Rick, by rights, you're the one who should leave. You're the one who savaged a friend and ally.

Go back to your ill gotten home, Rick.

And QUIT stealing Newt’s ideas and lines.

It’s over Rick. You had your chance.

We don't want Newt to drop out. He is our only hope to not only beat Obama, but fix the country. If Romney and Santorum had not spent all their money trying to trash Newt, he would be way ahead in the polls. If anybody would listen to Newt they would have to admit he is a genius. We want him for president and do not want him to ever give up.

Rick, by rights, you're the one who should leave. You're the one who savaged a friend and ally.

He did no such thing. Rick is running a campaign to win which is something Newt should consider if he is to be considered viable against Milt. Also, here we go again with the Newt people calling for the only guy in the race challenging Milt in any significant way to drop out. Wasn't it Newt that was pushing this "drop out scenario" since SC?

Gingrich said it is clear “I am the leading conservative,” and he hopes the conservative vote can be “consolidated” in the weeks ahead. When asked if he was calling on Santorum, he simply repeated his hope the conservative vote can be consolidated.

A Gingrich spokesman confirmed Wednesday that there's been no pressure from Santorum's camp to leave the race.

That's right. Rick isn't calling for anyone to drop out. He is instead getting in these state contests to win. How has Newt improved his delegate standing since the SC win?

When Rick bests Romney by gaining 51% of the delegates, he can whine for drop outs, but not when he has hit a wall.

Rick knows he has toasted himself, and is left desperate. However, it is now Newt’s time to advance, not retreat, and it’s Newt’s time to stop defending Ricky and go after him in kind, as needed, and on time.

As far as this Gingrich supporter is concerned?

NOT A SNOWBALL'S CHANCE IN HELL!

Now Tricky little Ricky is getting desperate! (Always has been)

Especially, after that Pandering stunt he pulled to the Leftist Auto Union thugs in Detroit, because he was so desperate to win at any cost, anyone who supports him from here on out is clearly the enemy!

Okay, I get your point but this is way I feel about this, I like Santorum okay, I will vote for him if nominated, indeed I will do what I can at that point to help get him elected, but I like Newt more. He represents a lot of people in the GOP better than the other candidates do, he is our voice, and we also want to be heard. I don't think this is over, and I don't think Romney has this sewn up; I understand he is running out of money, and he is also running out of states with heavily Mormon populations.
I like the idea we have a choice of candidates, representing various factions of the GOP, and that all of the states are going to have a voice this year. Newt is our thinker, and I think he should stay. I don't want Newt to drop out, I don't particularly want any of the candidates to drop out (well maybe Romney because I don't think he is really a republican,) in fact, I wish some of the other candidates were still in. Please don't be so unkind, it just isn't Newt you are dismissing, it is a lot of your fellow republicans.

“How has Newt improved his delegate standing since South Carolina?”

THAT is what Newt is about to demonstrate. His Georgia win will do things to asuage your delegate counting concerns, and if he even runs second, he is seen as the Phoenix rising, which is a threat to sinking Santorum.

How many committed delegates are in Georgia alone? There you go. Newt is back.

Sounds to me like Mitt trying to create more trouble in the Newt and Rick camps.

So far it is working beautifully for him.

Lazlo, I know you support Rick, and that’s fine. But, here, I only assert the facts.

After Fla, Rick went out to Co, Mo, and Mn- and ran a negative ad against Newt where Newt was pictured with Obama- and decried as the identical “insider”. He also said on the campaign- “the only woman I sit on a couch with is my wife”.

Now, those are facts— Newt, on the other hand, did not run 1 negative ad against Rick- and he only raises distinctions wt Rick as to policy- not personal.

You support Rick; ok— but let’s not try to re-write history.

I learned in combat, decades ago. When the enemy is advancing, you HOLD THE LINE!. That is the only chance you have to survive.

And I don't blow with the wind, like so many spineless, so called CONservatives are doing this Primary. This is exactly why we find ourselves in trouble at the moment.

Few people here, know how to stick to a solid plan and win with it. I refuse to leave my foxhole in the heat of battle! (GO Newt Gingrich)

I found the title on this article rather odd. The guy who wrote the article is Steve Peoples from AP.

So now I know why.

"I "even" give credit to Speaker Gingrich when I was thinking of running for the House, as a great educator as he is"

THEN Santorum says: "It was "important" for me to "understand" who we are"

Basically he is admitting that he learned all he knows through NEWT GINGRICH.

So I ask, why do we need you Rick, when we can have the ORIGINAL? You owe that to NEWT, you take the VP and wait your turn, it will come, your still young. You need to learn Loyalty first, but your trainable.

I respect your view- but for myself, Rick was the architect of the split in the conservative vote.

Cain, Bachmann, Perry all honorably went their way when the time was past. On the other hand, Rick refused to honorably yield and instead demagoged the “insider” and “personal baggage” issues against Newt in negative ads—

It worked- he became conservative frontrunner— but to what effect?

Also, you were right about Rush in the unrelated thread.
