The Dumb Don't Know They're Dumb
Rush Limbaugh.com ^ | March 1, 2012 | Rush Limbaugh

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: "A growing body of psychology research shows that incompetence deprives people of the ability to recognize their own incompetence. To put it bluntly, dumb people are too dumb to know it." It's a blessing! You know, the worst thing would be to be dumb and to know it -- and there's evidence all over that the dumb do not know they're dumb. You can see it. You can see it. How do you know the dumb person doesn't know they're dumb? What's the first clue? What is the first clue that a dumb person doesn't know that he or she is dumb? What is it? Well, you know what it is!

The first clue that a dumb person doesn't know they're dumb is they open their mouth. The way they dress. The political party that they join. There's all kinds of evidence. "Similarly, unfunny people don't have a good enough sense of humor to tell" they're not funny. Have you ever been around somebody who thinks they're funny at hell and they're not? It's 'cause they're too dumb to know that they're too dumb. This is why banning the ugly, making it voluntary, never worked. The ugly are too dumb to know it, and it's a blessing.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Let's go to the audio sound bites. Carol Costello, CNN, this morning on CNN's Newsroom reporting the story about Sandra Fluke and me and the brave congressional testimony. This woman who wants unlimited, no responsibility, no-consequences sex paid for by you and me, Carol Costello, CNN's stalker assigned to me. You'll also hear Suzanne Malveaux in this report.

COSTELLO: Rush Limbaugh blasted a young woman who called birth control a health care issue.

RUSH ARCHIVE: What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex. What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? Makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We're the pimps.

COSTELLO: See what I mean?

MALVEAUX: Wow.

COSTELLO: You're still reeling from the Rush Limbaugh thing, right.

MALVEAUX: Just -- just -- it's all very shocking, I imagine people have very strong opinions about it.

COSTELLO: Big difference, right, birth control, having sex.

RUSH: Yeah. Do you realize they don't get it? These are the liberal foot soldiers. These are not the leaders. These are the foot soldiers. They don't see 10% of what I see. It just doesn't compute at all. We just did a story, Snerdley, on how the stupid don't know they're stupid. Snerdley just asked me, "Can they really be this ignorant or dumb?" Yes, to answer your question. They heard every word I said and they are dumbfounded and they are reeling. Big difference, right, birth control, having sex? You don't need birth control if you're not having sex. The woman wants unlimited, no responsibility, no-consequences sex, and she wants it with contraceptives paid for by us. (interruption) Were these kinds of women around when I was in school?

Oh, oh, no, no, no. I didn't know any Flukes. No. Well, wait. I take it back. Yes. Every school had a couple of 'em. You know, for every 500 students, every school had a couple of these. Now they're everywhere. That's what you're getting at, right? And the two at your school, I mean even with birth control, you wouldn't go there. That's the big difference. I mean there were women that you might think you could get a disease, but you didn't care but -- (interruption) No, the two on average back then you wouldn't get, no. I see what you mean. They were there and they were well known. They were widely known, and so were the greasers that spent time with them. But you didn't find them in the A&W parking lot on Friday night, let's just put it that way.

As I've said before here, there is nothing more pathetic than a stupid person who thinks he/she is smart.

The liberal world, and the State-Run Media, is packed to the rafters with persons of this type.

What’s rich, is a guarantee every one of these people will hear Limbaugh called them dumb, and they won’t be able to say anything back.

Depends on which set of test scores you want to believe and whether or not I am verbally beating you to death during an argument.

Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can’t help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime: the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.

Guess I'd disagree with Mr Heinlein on this point. Ignorance (in the sense of honestly lacking information) is not a sin, but stupidity is, since stupidity is ignorance which, through laziness, arrogance, fatal lack of imagination, hatred or any other attitude which prevents one from removing his head from his rectum, is willingly maintained for purposes other than conforming to what is true. Ignorant people can be filled with information, as a starving man can be filled with food; stupid people are like starving people who either reject the food given them or, consuming it, head directly for the vomitorium. Stupid people may suspect they are stupid, or they may well not know it, but even if they suspect they are, they will never admit it, as this will mean the complete reorganization of firmly-held opinions or fantasies or hatreds that are the foundations for their stupidity.

And, unfortunately, in some professions (e.g., politics, acting, advertising) it can afford some success and a very nice living which can batten the barriers between their lives and reality, allowing them decades of damage. In fact, some professions provide stupidity with a broad, clear field to work in, and reward it handsomely, allowing the stupid to do years worth of damage to the real world before that supposedly inevitable verdict is issued by the universe.

Or maybe not.

Debating with one of them will tend to make one stupid too.

You start out thinking, "this will be easy" but find that to get through to them, you must step it down a notch and then another notch, then another and before you know it, you're as stupid as they are.

Been there.

What's worse, much of widespread stoopid is the fault of gummint schools where it is nurtured and cultivated. No one should be made to feel inferior for being a little, well, slow. Wouldn't it be better to come to grips with the reality of not being the sharpest knife in the drawer earlier rather than later??? Not everyone can be a rocket scientist or a Rush Limbaugh. Hitting the real world being unaware of one's "limitations" has got to be a real kick in the teeth. If one doesn't realize they're stoopid, next thing you know they'll feel they're ENTITLED to what everybody else has. Truth is, SOMEBODY'S got to dig the ditches and clean out the septic tanks, eh?

Now just where is it I heard about jobs that Americans won't do??? Small wonder.

Now THAT'S interesting! First I've seen or heard of it. BTW, your wiki link didn't go where it was supposed to so I had to do some digging and found it HERE. ;^)

It does raise some questions about our culture, or maybe more likely our present education system, in light of comparisons to other cultures; in particular East Asians, who seem to exhibit just the opposite characteristics. We may in fact be coddling our future day laborers, leading them to believe they could some day become, say, president. Curious.

This COULD be true — I think my sister as well as a friend’s daughter, took BC pills to control period issues. But not only is this not common, it isn’t what they’re talking about.

Cue the retroactive explanations of what they meant.

Funny you mention that. A couple of years ago Obama participated in some "first-shovelful" groundbreaking ceremony for a construction project somewhere -- women's center, vo-tech ed building, whatever. He had taken off his suit and donned overalls and workboots -- the round-toed kind you see everywhere, with or without steel-toe caps, and was standing there shovelful in hand, looking to his right. You know, he never looked so natural in his life -- like he belonged down in that pit, in overalls and steeltoes, shovel in hand. "The Real Obama Stands Up for Women's (whatever)."

Respectfully disagree with both of you.

Ignorance is a negative, it's the lack of knowledge, which approaches infinity in nearly all human subjects.

Stupidity is the straightforward lack of ability to think and reason and mentate. It is the thing that horses and dogs have, which flatworms lack from natural incapacity.

In people, well, it's grounds for institutionalization or eleemosynary care by significant others.

Ignorance is a negative, it's the lack of knowledge, which approaches infinity in nearly all human subjects.

No arguments here--given that we are finite creatures living in a universe that is, if not infinite, certainly transfinite (that is, finite but, like, real, real big!)the amount of what we not only don't but can't know is close enough to infinite as makes no practical difference!

Stupidity is the straightforward lack of ability to think and reason and mentate. It is the thing that horses and dogs have, which flatworms lack from natural incapacity.

The second sentence here is a little unclear to me; is the thing which horses and dogs have stupidity or the ability to reason and think and mentate? I have encountered horses and dogs that have at least a fundamental ability to solve problems, which suggests some element of reasoning in their mental make-up. If they have it but don't bother to use the abilities they have, this would make them, in my view, stupid. Flatworms, lacking these abilities, could not be called stupid any more than a snail could be blamed for not being able to gallop or hunt. Boethius (author of The Consolation of Philosophy, a rather short but very smart little book written in the sixth century AD) says that the signature quality of humans that makes us human (since nearly every physical ability we have is equaled or surpassed by other animals) is the ability to reason and make moral choices, and that we are human only insofar as we use this ability. Humans can be stupid in a way that other animals cannot be, and certainly cannot be blamed for being.

In people, well, it's grounds for institutionalization or eleemosynary care by significant others.

Agreed, particularly if there is a constitutional inability to think or behave in human ways such as Boethius outlines. But when a person has the ability but steadfastly or lazily refuses to use it because there is something he wants more than the truth, or just cannot be bothered to make the effort, then it is (as I see it) a sin, a morally blameworthy act. And if it is blameworthy, it is correctable by the person himself,
