~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Pacific Missile Range Facility
Barking Sands, Hawaii

Pacific Missile Range Facility is the world's largest instrumented multi-environment range capable of supporting surface, subsurface, air, and space operations simultaneously.

There are over 1,100 square miles of instrumented underwater range and over 42,000 square miles of controlled airspace. This makes PMRF a premier facility for supporting operations which vary from small, single-unit exercises up to large scale, multiple-unit battle group scenarios.

The mission of the Pacific Missile Range Facility is to facilitate Training, Tactics Development, and Test & Evaluations for air, surface, and sub-surface weapons systems and Advanced Technology Systems.

PMRF provides the full spectrum of instrument range support, including; radar, underwater instrumentation, telemetry, electronic warfare, target remote command & control, communications, target launching facilities, data display, data processing and target/weapon launching and recovery facilities.

The headquarters and primary operation center of PMRF occupies approximately 1800 acres and is located on the western shore of the island of Kauai. The nearest town, Kekaha, is eight miles to the south and east. Supporting instrumentation sites at Makaha Ridge and Kokee Park overlook the vast ocean range areas to the west and north Kauai.

The range encompasses 42,000 sq. miles of sea and air space and has minimal encroachments. The underwater tracking range extends over a 1000 sq. miles areas. PMRF features a state of the art instrumentation suite & communication network.

Lead range in the Pacific for Aegis Combat System Ship Qualification Training, PMRF puts new Aegis platforms through extensive testing & training prior to initial deployment. Collocated with the Sandia National Laboratory Kauai Test Facility, PMRF is the lead range for launching the Strategic Target System. No other range has the unencroached geographic expanse necessary to support wide area defense sensor and cooperative engagement capability testing.

The Navy is currently using PMRF to test hit to kill technology using direct collision of the anti-ballistic missile with its target. This destroys the target by using only kinetic energy from the force of the collision. The two Missile Defense Agency programs that currently utilize the range at PMRF are the Navy's Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System and the Army's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System, or THAAD. The THAAD program relocated their testing operations from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and conducted its first demonstration at PMRF on 26 January 2007.

On 27 April 2007, the U.S. military's sea-based missile defense system, the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, showed it could intercept two targets simultaneously when it destroyed a cruise missile and a short-range ballistic missile during a test off the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The test marked eight out of ten times the Missile Defense Agency and U.S. Navy's Aegis missile defense system successfully intercepted its target, but was the first time the system knocked out two targets at the same time.

Dingo The Dog

March 6, 2012

Harry Tupper is a fishing legend here in Idaho where I live. There’s a spot on Henry’s Lake over on the east side of the state that’s named for him: “Tupper’s Hole.”

The thing I remember most about Harry, aside from his rare ability to catch those huge Henry’s Lake trout, was his dog, Dingo. Now there was a dog! Dingo used to sit alongside Harry in his boat and watch intently while he fished. When the old fisherman hooked a trout, Dingo would bark furiously until the fish was netted and released.

Dingo’s enthusiasm taught me something: It’s better to get more excited about what others are doing than what we are doing.

So, as I read Philippians 2:4 and think about Dingo, I ask myself: Do I spend time thinking about “the interests of others”? Do I get as excited about what God is doing in and through a friend as I do about what He is doing in and through me? Do I long to see others grow in grace and find success, though it may have been my efforts that made them prosper?

This is the measure of greatness, for we are most like God when our thoughts for ourselves are lost in our thoughts for others. Paul said it best: “Let each esteem others better than himself” (2:3). Is that how we live?

Love feels the sorrows others feel,
It longs to give support,
And love is quick to take delight
In every good report. —D. De Haan
A life filled with love for the Lord and for others is a fulfilling life.

Read: Philippians 2:1-4

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also the interests of others. —Philippians 2:4

Joshua 22-24

25 years ago took a fishing/sightseeing tour on a fast Whaler only 500 yards off the base. They were firing SUBROCS right over our heads, with recovery vessels running around us; had my camera taking pics, but the Navy didn`t bother us. In those days I guess the only security threat there were drunken tour skippers.

My husband was on a TWR out of Pearl Sub base. They used to fish on their trips between the islands or when they just sat waiting. My husband had his nose broken by a 60lb Mahi Mahi. The guys got it up to the open end of the boat (where the torpedoes were put) and my husband grabbed it in a bear hug, it reared back and slapped him in the face breaking his nose.

In Fallon Nevada he had a scorpion sting him in the stomach when he was spotting targets in the deserts.

Aloha Doc!

Lauren published the story of Barking Sands long ago, perhaps she'll indulge us again. I'll add this to the thread though; the Pacific Missile Range at Barking Sands is a multi-puropse command. It's also used for amphibious assault drills by the Marines.

Cheer me up, Doc.....today I visited Social Secriity, then I went to the Marine recruiter's office.

A pretty good day, thanks. We had a few flurries here today - I understand that south of us in Virginia they got up to 10 inches. We dodged the bullet once again!

Rested well over the weekend - the PT place messed up my appointment for this evening - got the next three straightened out though.

Hold it Doc! Don't go to bed without a bedtime story!

The Legend of Barking Sands;
There was an old Hawaiian fisherman who lived in a hut near the beach with his nine dogs. During his fishing trips he would tie his dogs to stakes in the sand, three to each of three stakes. He would then get into his canoe and go fishing. One day while he was at sea and the dogs were tied as usual, he was caught in a very bad storm. For hours he battled the heavy seas until he was finally able to return to land. He was so exhausted that he crawled to his hut, forgetting to untie his dogs. When he awoke the next morning and went outside, the dogs were nowhere in sight. All he saw were three small mounds of sand where the dogs had been tied. As he stepped on one of the mounds, he heard a low bark. Another step brought another bark, Still he couldn't find the dogs. Believing the dogs had been buried in the sand because of the storm the day before, the fisherman began to dig. As each shovel full was removed, more sand took its place. He finally gave up, and every day after that when he crossed the beach he could hear the low barking. The dogs were never found, and to this day the sands of Mana have been know as Barking Sands. The scientific explanation of this phenomenon is that the grains of Mana sand are tinny, hollow spheres. When rubbed together, the give off a popping sound similar to the barking of dogs. This only occurs when the sand is very dry. Wet sand gives off almost no sound.

Aloha po....
