Not many high school seniors can say theyve helped write a bill. North Miami Senior High valedictorian Daniela Pelaez is one of the lucky few. The bill? Its called the STARS Act (Studying Towards Adjusted Residency Status). Its a modified version of the controversial DREAM Act, the long-stalled legislation that would allow undocumented students to remain in the country. Pelaezs struggle with her own immigration status sparked a trip to Washington, D.C., with Congressman David Rivera, R-Miami, to draft STARS. Currently, undocumented immigrants do not begin to accumulate unlawful status until six months after they turn18. Under the STARS Act, students within the sixth-month grace period would be allowed to extend their stay in the United States if they are graduating high school and planning to attend a four-year university. We have to start somewhere, Pelaez said. The full DREAM act is going to happen. I have hope that it will, but not now. Students considered for residency adjustment would have to have arrived in the United States before they turned 16, as well as lived in the country for five consecutive years before applying. Pelaezs own residency status was adjusted last week after classmates, teachers and community members rallied for her to stay.

What does it take to be “valedictorian” these days? Show up for school three days in a row?
No thanks, go home.
This is the problem...it isn't a solution, but a slow creep that will turn into a slippery slope of rewarding illegal behavior.
I've been watching this case, and have posted a couple of threads about it...seems as though this girl is here through no fault of her own, and has done well in society. She seems to have an expired residency-but the law needs to be enforced.
She is stupid, though, for thinking that illegal aliens ought to get special treatment.
Makes me sick.
However, the STARS Act does not ensure automatic suspension of removal or automatic residency. This legislation very specifically focuses on students who have been accepted to four year colleges and universities and have not yet accrued penalty time. STARS Act applicants must show good moral character and graduate with a degree from an accredited four year institution of higher learning to then be eligible for legal status. Likewise, if the applicant fails to meet the necessary criteria, their conditional non-immigrant status will be revoked.”
It does not mean they are automatically granted legal status it simply changes the criteria for eligibility in a very narrow circumstance.
Her mother already moved back to Columbia, where they came from. Columbia doesn't need smart H.S. grads? Get out!
Enact this law and more of them will come here to dump their children and force us to raise them and give them services. Then the final insult will be the anchors will sponsor the illegal parents to come here.
We don’t need them, GPA of 1 or 100.
Get that illegal alien out of here now.
How about the GHOST act?
GET the HELL OUT SOON...TODAY!
So they are going to come over here make us pay to raise their children all as part of a plot to have those children accepted into four year colleges or university within the time range specified so those children can then be eligible to apply for citizenship. Just how many do you believe will qualify under those terms?
Not stupid. But brainwashed, indoctrinated, etc. In her world and the world in which she operates this way of thinking is not only encouraged but demanded.
Our country is lost. Will we fight to take it back? I am close to heartbroken to see the glimpse of the future my children will face.
