Miami Herald ^ | Saturday, 03.10.12 | Monique O. Madan

Trayvon Martin traveled to Sanford on a trip with his father. The teen returned to his Miami home in a body bag. Martin, 17, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by a neighborhood crime watch captain. The circumstances of the shooting are still unknown, but George Zimmerman, the 28-year-old man who shot Martin, told police he shot in self-defense.

What happened. Zimmerman was in a car, and the teenager was on foot. Why did Zimmerman get out of the car?

'Zimmerman, a criminal justice student at Seminole State College, reported to police a "suspicious person in the area," and began following the teen in his SUV. A dispatcher told Zimmerman — who had a concealed weapons permit and carried a black Kel Tek 9mm semi-automatic — that a squad car would be dispatched and that police would handle it.'

Why would he be suspicious? I 'assume' the guy entered the gate correctly, or passed thru a gate guard. If the guy entered illegally, ie trespassing, yeah there is a problem. But, a dude walking in a gated community is suspicious?

Shrug. Hopefully, the truth will come out.

The kid was in an unfamiliar area, by himself.

Without facts, I would be hard-pressed to think he was trying to rob anybody, since most black thugs are usually in groups.

Probably in wrong place at wrong time, with a trigger-happy cop-wannabe.

Second-to-last paragraph of a two page story (Trayvon Martin is the dead teen):

Martin, who lived with his mother in Miami, was a junior at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School. He was in the middle of serving a one-week suspension from the school. Tracy Martin would not discuss his son’s suspension, but said he took Trayvon to the Central Florida town, best known as the auto train stop closest to Orlando, “to disconnect and get his priorities straight.”

Things that make you go "Hmmmm......"

Gated community?

Yes, you can be quite suspicious looking walking around some of them ~ probably why folks drive ~ they have these private police forces and all ~ last thing you want to happen is to be looked at funny by the guy at the gate.

Some people like to live this way ~ I don't.

Someone representing themselves as a teacher of the boy said that he was suspended for being tardy according to the Miami Herald.

I still have to wonder why Zimmerman left the car. The only reason to do that would be to protect another individual.

Let us say he got out and confronted the boy. If your 17 year old son was confronted by a stranger in a car would you not be defensive. Depending on what was said the child might even get aggressive. He might even throw a punch. If he had a CCW he might even be inclined to pull it in response to being followed and confronted. It is not like the Neighborwood Watch guy had a badge.

What then happens?

It is really scary when someone who is driving confronts you. You are particularly vulnerable.

I wouldn’t want to live in one, if I didn’t have to do so. I prefer the sort of neighbourhoods where you can be neighbourly.

But, if I lived in a high crime area, I wouldn’t necessarily say no to one, if I had to live in one.

Black kids, who have active fathers, are usually pretty good kids. If his father did that, it’s likely the kid was a hanger, but not into anything serious.

I honestly cannot see this kid casing a place, at this point in time.

For a week? In the schools in my county, you have to be tardy more than a dozen times to get suspended for a day or two. But for a week? And what was he doing rather than going to class?

I don't know anything about this kid (and I find it hard to believe that this shooting is justified), but I also have been around the block enough times to know that there are seldom clear "good guys" and "bad guys" involved in shootings. Mostly "bad guys" and "worse guys." Not saying that's true here, but I wouldn't be surprised...

It’s also recognized in the security industry that many people seeking employment as security guards are either failed cops or people who couldn’t pass the LEO psychological exam.

True fact.

Sanford has a huge black population. I’m sure Zimmerman is used to living in mixed communities.

This gated community is in a mixed neighborhood and if I remember correctly the elementary school across the street is named after a black woman.

The nearest 7/11 is close to a 4-mile round trip walk as there is no direct route from this kid’s house. And yet this kid set out in the rain to do this walk and buy snacks. Lots of places to score drugs too.

I mean as long as we’re speculating about Zimmerman we may as well explore why this kid went out on a 4-mile walk in the rain and then was scared shitless when approached by a neighborhood watch.

“Why any neighborhood watchman be carrying a loaded gun?,’’ said Benjamin Crump, the family’s attorney.

Yep, sounds like an erudite attorney, that's for sure.

He's using Obamaphonics to score street cred with the black community.

My understanding is that Zimmerman is a neighborhood watch captain, there had been recent crimes in the community, and the kid did not live there. If these are true facts then it would be reasonable for Zimmerman to ask the kid what his business was. Of course it would also be reasonable for the kid to reply “None of your business.”

None of that matters. Zimmerman is a grown man who showed a lack of sense. He didn’t have to get out of the car. He isn’t a cop. He probably got carried away and now he’ll be very lucky not to go to jail.

From the official stories I’ve read, the boy was on his way back from a store and was confronted by Zimmerman.
The family says the boy was only armed with Skittles and Zimmerman with a gun. The boy left in a body bag and the man went home. They want him arrested.
The stories also say Zimmerman’s back was wet and had grass on it and he had a bloody patch on the back of his head and a bloody nose.

Sounds like another ‘yute’ tried a beatdown.

This guy is toast and likely deserves it. A kid is in a strange area and some weirdo starts tailing him in his SUV. He is young enough to be rightly scared, but old enough to defend himself. Words were probably exchanged, creepy SUV guy gets out of his car and a fight starts.

If im the guy walking down the street, then guy getting out of his car is a fight or flight situation, no BS about it. This guy should have just called the cops, then minded his own damn business. Just my opinion...

Nope. Attacking a guy carrying a gun is a "death penalty." Not for criminality... but for stupidity. (If the truth of this case is as it seems, which no one knows yet...)

BTW, with those reasoning skills (and your deft use of the strawman fallacy), are you sure you're on the correct website?

What a stupid statement. In this country you have the right to walk down the street without some half ass want to be cop asking you any damn thing. And how in the world do you know who attack who. Try reading the constitution chump. You remind me of the want to be cop in Elizabethton, tn, that decided he would run down and arrest a speeding car driver. She was a doctor on the way to the hospital, the state cop that showed up arrested his ass , after the fine, he is under court order to not play cop anymore.

So after being chastised for inventing strawmen... you do so again on a grander scale! Obviously you cannot have a discussion without flamboyant hyperbole. Good day to you...

Know how many idiot cops are in jail for violating someone civil rights. This a clean case of violation of the kids rights. But I would bet money the idiot shooter is the kid of some half ass cop.

This was in a gated community where there had recently been robberies. If I was a resident and saw Martin, I'd call someone, too.

Please don't tell me that the kid didn't understand how a gated community worked.I'm sure he's been there before.

How many times was he given "leave" from school?
