In his announcement rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline today, President Obama boasted that under his administration, “domestic oil and natural gas production is up.” Obama, of course, failed to mention that his administration can’t actually take any credit for the increase.
The vast majority of America’s new oil and gas production is happening on private lands in states like North Dakota, Alaska and Texas.

Obama says that speculators are driving up oil prices in anticipation of a war in the Middle East. However, If the Keystone XL pipeline were under construction and within two years would be moving Canadian oil to the US as well as oil from new finds in North Dakota, how would speculators react? The US is the world's largest market for oil and with the US through the XL pipeline having an uninterruptable supply of oil and no longer dependent on oil from the Middle East wouldn't speculators have a lot less opportunity to push up prices?

Obama could also ease the pain at the pump by suspending EPA regulations that during seasonal changes force refiners to make numerous different gasoline blends that boost costs. How about a holiday from the federal gas tax?

Federal and state gas taxes far exceed oil company profits per gallon.

That fact should be disclosed every time the 'greedy' oil companies are being bashed.
