PARIS Tens of thousands of anti-nuclear protesters across the globe called for an end to nuclear power as they marked the first anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami at Japan's Fukushima power plant.
In Japan, tens of thousands rallied near the crippled plant, demanding an end to nuclear power as the nation held memorial ceremonies for a disaaster that claimed almost 20,000 lives.
Demonstrators in France's Rhone valley formed a human chain that organisers said stretched for 230 kilometres (140 miles) and consisted of about 60,000 people. The region has Europe's highest concentration of nuclear reactors, demonstrators said.
France's 58 nuclear reactors generate about 75 percent of the country's electricity, making it the world's most nuclear-dependent nation. Activists across Germany carried out similar protests, with organisers claiming as many as 50,000 people turned out across the country.

They probably took the electric train to the protest.
Really? They couldn’t do any better than that hoary old “cause”?
The irony is that most protesters in this cause are urbanized young people who are the farthest removed from and the least able to cope in a world without electricity.
Using this time to stage an anti-nuke protest, instead of allowing the Japanese to remind the world of all the death and destruction they suffered, is pretty f-ing tacky.
But leftists have never been known for their tact.
And these people have pledged not to use nuclear-generated power or any items manufactured or stored with said power ??
Didn’t think so....
Luddites! Greenies, go back to the 19th Century and get an f’n horse, heat your house with wood or coal and drive up your carbon credits!
20,000 dead? The last I checked it was more like 200. Seriously, did I miss something?
Wow. There must have been like a gazillion of them.
And then they went back home and felt stupid.
These a-holes should’ve spent 15 months in a Japanese concentration camp in SE Asia.
Long live Paul Tibbits and long live the Enola Gay!
These people are lunatics. They want to ban nuclear and carbon sources. This results in miserable poverty. These clowns think that “renewable sources” will solve all problems. Too bad they don’t understand the laws of physics. The real tragedy is that the President of the United States is implementing their nonsense as energy policy.
The only renewables they are going to get is "Dust to dust...ashes to ashes".
No Chevy Volt?
No Sirius or Pandora?
No Twitter, Facebook or text messages?
The world as they know it would end!
Along that line of thought,
Anyone remember the old SF story about the Earth going through a space cloud of electricity-eating microbes?
No TV or radio, so people began to stroll through their neighborhoods in the evenings to talk with folks.
Spark plugs no longer worked, so diesels were the only engines. Horse drawn carriages & plows were back.
Kerosine lamps or similar were to only home nighttime illumination, so people went to bed earlier.
IOW, everything went back to the 1890’s pace of life.
Their cell phones, I-Pods and computers are made from magic dust in factories powered by Unicorn gas.
These savages would not be happy until Capitalism was destroyed and they were rubbing sticks together and using bones for the worship of the devil.
I don't believe it - I want to see pictures of the 'tens of thousands'...
Here's what's real: Hundreds of millions of people want lower power bills. Guess the 'hundreds of millions' don't count to the Democrat Media Complex. Just the folks in the street -the ones looking like liberal rabble... yep, they count...
50,000 people showed....pretty much the size of a Cubs baseball game attendance!!
they conveniently tossed in those killed by the tsunami
