Three Horry County law enforcement agencies are partnering to hold a gun buyback program later this month in an effort to get the weapons off the streets and away from children and potential criminals.
“It’s a community problem and all our aims are to address these are similar in fashion, we just each serve a different population,” Conway police Chief Reggie Gosnell said.
“It’s hard to measure success because we don’t know where that gun would have ended up, but if we keep one off the street and away from children, and raise awareness of gun violence in the community, it is a success.”
Members of Conway police, Horry County police and the Horry County Sheriff’s Office will host the gun buyback at two locations in Conway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 24. Residents can turn in their weapons with no questions asked by police and receive gift cards.
It is the first gun buyback for these departments and the first such joint effort between the three agencies.
Myrtle Beach officials held a gun buyback last year and took in about 140 guns, a greater than anticipated response, according to officials. Georgetown police also had a similar program that netted 30 handguns.
“It’s time now. Something has to be done,” Horry County Sheriff Lt. Oliver Parmley said of recent gun violence that includes six homicides so far this year in Horry County.
“Do we really expect the violators to come out and bring the guns? We’re hopeful. Everyone has to receive the message it’s time to stop the violence.

That would make more sense than the continuing unfunny statements by Freepers that they lost their guns in a "tragic boating accident" (as though one would be transporting his guns in a boat). Don't they ever get tired of that?
It is amazing to me looking at the mostly revolvers in that picture that many people have become so enamored with semi-auto plastics, aluminum, hybrid pistols that they think a vintage Model 10, a classic 45 ACP US Army, a Victory Model, or a vintage S&W 686 is passe...I’d much rather have one of those. I have both kinds, but the revolvers are my passion.
Yeah...just about as unfunny as complaining about the logic and reason of bi-plane vs. boating....And, no....we don’t get tired of it. If we can have all this Viking Kitty, Kitty this and that, pancake this and that, a few boating accident jokes aren’t going to add to the load that much.

Here’s the whole story.
I was going to take my guns to this turn-in-your-gun-and-become-defenseless event. So I put all my guns and ammo in the second seat of my biplane (tight fit!).
I was flying the plane and feeling really good about becoming a defenseless sheep. So I decided to celebrate by doing a barrel roll. Oops! When I did that, all the guns and ammo fell out of the plane.
I’m not trying to be funny. Just complaining, that’s all.

OK, at least that’s more clever than the continuing banality of “I lost my guns in a tragic boating accident.”
And I’m not entirely without a sense of humor. I do think the “moose bit my sister” bit is somewhat witty. Odd, but witty.

I see you’re getting the usual responses about boating accidents and such, but this is not a joke. Something else seems to be going on in Horry County, SC.
Simultaneously with this symbolic nonsense, the Horry County Commissioners are trying to enact an ordinance which would ban the discharge of a firearm within 900’ of any residence. With the population density and distribution, this would effectively criminalize hunting and target shooting throughout much of the county, even out in the “rural” areas.
That nice farm where you’ve had permission to hunt for years still has a house on it, or the deer lease your club uses abuts a tract with a trailer park. Time to wake up, folks.
In South Carolina it’s pronounce “Oar-ree” county and takes it’s name from a colonial French Huguenot settler.
In Charleston there’s a street named after another Huguenot settler, Huger, that’s pronounced “Eu-gee”.
So, if they are determined to get your guns, they will and no statement of yours (”well, I lost them”) is going to help one bit.
Of course, I am seeing some interesting burial units in my gun publications which may do the trick. You gotta bury them in a really obscure place, though. You have to have some substantial acreage to pull this off.
Form 4473 is held by the gunshop for specific inspection. Government
is not allowed to ‘hold’ them just in case. There has tobe reasonable
suspicion of a crime. They only know you bought a weapon if a NICS check was done. Law prohibits them from archiving this too. Additionally, a NICS check isn’t required for a carry license owner here in Georgia.
That is the reason why this gunshop was in trouble. They have no damned
right by law to inventory what anyone has without due cause.
As for hiding things, the Nazis didn’t find everything; they won’t in this case either.
I essentially agree with you. The only problem I have is that the gunshops do keep those records, which they are not supposed to share with the government except in crime cases.
My problem with this is that if our government should become more tyrannical than it already is, they could demand those records (laws be damned) and get that information on gun owners. Whether the gunshops would provide them willingly is problematical. But they would if they were facing a government goon squad.
Where am I wrong here on this issue?
